Gear and muscle memory

Word has it that Kevin Levrone doesn't lift any more because the muscle size he attained in the past comes back fast due to muscle memory, even without the 'supplements'.  Any one have have thoughts on using a cycle to break thru a plateau once you've reached your upper genetic limits and relying on muscle memory to keep some additional size rather than hormones?  Seems like a reasonable use without subjecting your self to the side effects of long term/mult. cycles.
