theres a story about WW .......back when he was younger and his hatred for the english had just started to erupt.........he was making a name for himself and gaining support...

he was with a few of his men and they bumped into several english on horseback ,,,,, one englishman was an officer and was probably throwing his weight about........

well the story goes..... WW and his men brutally killed all of them and wallace skinned the officer and made a belt from his skin....this was to show his hatred of the english and why they should not be in scotland giving orders to scotsmen.

something like thattttt    ;D

That would be Trading PLACES, and yeah, that could have easily been in the top ten I posted. I see you love your Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy comedies...me too!

It's funny, I sometimes think I left my funny bone mostly back in the 70's and 80's. SILVER STREAK (Pryor & Wilder), BEVERLY HILLS COP (Murphy), and CADDYSHACK (Dangerfield, Bill Murray) were absolutely hilarious.

that other ghetto one with laurence tate (o-dog, g-dog  ???)

Way to narrow down your choices, FatPanda.  ::)  ;D

"that other ghetto one" LOL That would be MENACE II SOCIETY. Great movie.

In no particular order:

                   Nicholas Nickleby

A young compassionate man struggles to save his family and friends from the abusive exploitation of his coldheartedly grasping uncle.

This film will take you through every possible human emotion imaginable, ...and back again.

Juana la Loca  English Title: Mad Love

The love story that transformed Juana, Queen of Spain, into Juana "The mad".
A story of passions, lies and jealousy with a politic fight behind it

In the tradition of 'Elizabeth' and 'Queen Margo' comes Mad Love, a sumptuous epic tale of passion and power based on the scandalously true story of betrothed royalty and betrayed loyalty

Shortly after Queen Isabella of Spain sends Columbus off in search of the New World, she sends her beautiful young daughter Joan away for a politically advantageous arranged marriage. When Joan meets her intended, the dashing and handsome Archduke Phillip, the two fall passionately in love.

All is not to remain well for the newlyweds. As Joan births an abundance of heirs, Phillips attentions and affections wander. In response to Phillip's philandering, Joans behaviour becomes increasingly erractic. Seizing the opportunity to become sole ruler, Phillip and his advisors  plot to have his wife declared insane and dethrone her

                          Vatel

In 1671, with war brewing with Holland, a penniless prince invites Louis XIV to three days of festivities at a chateau in Chantilly. The prince wants a commission as a general, so the extravagances are to impress the king. In charge of all is the steward, Vatel, a man of honor, talent, and low birth. The prince is craven in his longing for stature: no task is too menial or dishonorable for him to give Vatel. While Vatel tries to sustain dignity, he finds himself attracted to Anne de Montausier, the king's newest mistress. In Vatel, she finds someone who's authentic, living out his principles within the casual cruelties of court politics. Can the two of them escape unscathed?

               The Count of Monte Cristo

'The Count of Monte Cristo' is a remake of the Alexander Dumas tale by the same name. Dantes, a sailor who is falsely accused of treason by his best friend Fernand, who wants Dantes' girlfriend Mercedes for himself. Dantes is imprisoned on the island prison of Chateau d'If for 13 years, where he plots revenge against those who betrayed him. With the help of another prisoner, he escapes the island and proceeds to transform himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo as part of his plan to exact revenge

                    Dangerous Beauty

The 1st 2 minutes are the actual theatrical trailer. The rest are additional scenes from the film set to cheesy music

Passion. Seduction. Betrayal. A Scandalous Love Story

Born without privilege. Bound by tradition. She found the courage to follow her heart.

In 16th century Venice, courtesans enjoy unique privileges: dressed richly in red, they read, compose poetry and music, and discuss affairs of state with the men who govern the Republic. When Veronica Franco comes of age, she cannot marry Marco Venier, whom she loves, because she is well born but penniless. Her choice: cloister or courtesan. She steels her heart, and with beauty and intelligence becomes the best. She's a heroine when she helps convince France to aid Venice in war with Turkey, but when plague descends, the Church charges her with witchcraft. At her inquisition, she must match wits with an old rival, speak for all women, and call courage from Venier.

Shi mian mai fu English Title: House of Flying Daggers

The cinematography and choreography on this one will blow your mind.
  :o

"Prepare your eyes for popping in this martial-arts fireball that throws in a lyrical love story, head spinning fights and dazzling surprises" - Rolling Stone

During the reign of the corrupt Tang dynasty in China, a secret organization called "The House of the Flying Daggers" rises and opposes the government. Mei is a beautiful blind dancer accused of an association with this secret organization. Captured by officers of the decadent Tang Dynasty, Mei finds herself both threatened and attracted to the most unusual circumstances. Here, her heart and loyalties battle each other, amid warriors in the treetops and dazzling combat - the likes of which have never been seen

                          Gosford Park

Sir William McCordle is a wealthy but uncouth industrialist-turned-aristocrat, with a large house in the English countryside, complete with staff. It is a world where everything runs in order - both upstairs, where Sir William and his much younger wife Lady Sylvia indulge in a very comfortable existence of shooting, dinners and parties, and downstairs, where the servants work endlessly under the command of the butler Mr. Jennings, and the house keeper Mrs. Wilson. Whether they like it or not, everyone knows their place. But a shooting party will change all of that, with friends of the McCordles and their servants arriving from outside to upset the order. And so begins a complicated tale of secrets, lies, deceit, betrayal, revenge, bitterness, hatred, money and love. As the weekend goes on and secrets are revealed, it seems everyone, above stairs and below, wants a piece of William and his money, but how far will they go to get it...?

                     The Remains of The Day

A rule bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a housekeeper who falls in love with him in post-WWI Britain. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause, challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

                          Phone Booth

Stuart Shepard (Colin Farrell) finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle.

Director Joel Schumacher preserves his reputation with a script by Larry Cohen about personal morals and hopefully the truth providing some kind of redemption. This is a white knuckle nerve wrecker about a self-serving publicist making the mistake of his life by answering a public telephone. On the other end of the phone is a self empowered mad man (Kiefer Sutherland) inflicting demands on the fast talking, fast thinking publicity dealer who just happened to be walking by the phone booth he passes every day.

                  Killing Me Softly

This is a fusion of Scooter's 'Lass uns Tanzen' with genuine footage from the film albeit altered to black n' white

How can you escape what you can't resist?

Red-hot Heather Graham (Boogie Nights) and Joseph Fiennes (Shakepeare in Love) sizzle like never before in this steamy sexual odyssey about the addictive and deadly powers of illicit passion.

Too much of a good thing ... can be deadly. When Alice (Graham), an American living in London, meets Adam (Fiennes), a handsome adventurer, she's lured out of her safe, mundane life to pursue an affair that brings her to the heights of excitement and ecstacy. But when Adam's mysterious and violent past begins to surface. Alice investigates... and learns that Adam's past - and her future - may both point to murder!

                          Door to Door

Warning: - This is not a trailer for the film, but it does include a small clip from it. I couldn't find a Youtube trailer or any other trailer for this one, ...and that could be a good thing. This film will grab your heart with both hands and squeeze the shit out of it. I swear in less than 45 seconds after the opening credits, I was balling my eyes out! Don't say you HAVE not been warned!

William H. Macy portrays the adult life of Bill Porter, an inspirational story about a man afflicted with Cerebral Palsy who manages to become a successful door-to-door salesman throughout four decades spanning the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties.

The hardest part for me was getting through each sucessive turmoil in the main characters life. If this doesn't make you see how much you take for granted then nothing will. Bill Porter is a story that's worth telling and done so in a manner that was entirely compelling. Not only was the flick a tear jerker but a real valuable lesson on why people need to be given respect no matter how hard they may have it in life. Respect is most definitely the most important part of a person's life. Persistence in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds make's the challenge all the more rewarding.

You know there's a bunch of talk nowadays about how decadent a culture we have become and how the liberalism of the 60's was a failure. I find the fact that some people really came to like and trust such a decent man as Bill Porter a reflection on the good that does come when people care just as much about their community as they do themselves. No matter who they are or how wrong they may seem in the eyes of society they respected Bill. We live in a world where the only concern has become preservation of wealth, while in many respects preservation of community and peace has slipped by the wayside. This movie in many ways is a wake up call to care for one another, to love thy neighbor and give people the chance to succeed.

This movie reminds us of the things that truly matter in life, such as empathy, respect, patience and humor. Sometimes we all need to think like Bill Porter and put our best foot forward even in the face of ignorance and suffering. It's not so much a question of doing good only for reward but of doing something/anything rather then quitting when odds are that you will lose the fight. Not giving in to that feeling is what makes "Door to Door" such an incredible success for anybody that cares to listen to the messege of the film. In forcing yourself to see the world through Bill's eyes you grow to respect him as a individual person that in his mind is not disabled in anyway not just because he thinks so but because he does so by lifting everyone he encounters in his life up to his altitude. Attitude is 95% of the battle and Bill proves himself a winner in life by winning that battle despite a course that is fraught with obstacles that you or me may never encounter.

And many many many more too numerous to list or even remember.   :)

Dangerous Liaisons would be right up Madam's alley, so to speak.  Malkovich and Close are deliciously cruel.

Edit: I was the only one in the theatre who roared with laughter when the Gentleman in the pub asked Hopkins, "You're uh...erm... not some sort of manservant are you?" in Remains.  Does that make me a bad person?

{giggle} No, ...it just makes you normal.

Another couple I forgot to include was...

                   The Merchant of Venice

In 16th century Venice, when a merchant must default on a large loan from an abused Jewish moneylender for a friend with romantic ambitions, the bitterly vengeful creditor demands a gruesome payment instead.

                     The Affair of The Necklace

In pre-Revolutionary France, a young aristocratic woman left penniless by the political unrest in the country,
must avenge her family's fall from grace by scheming to steal a priceless necklace.

I can hardly wait to grab a DVD screener of this one

                        "The Duchess"

There were 3 people in her marriage.
The scandal that shocked a nation. The courage that defined a woman.

Based On The Incredible True Story, it is a chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life... a woman reputed to have been capable of seducing any man she encountered, ...except the one she was married to

The similarities between the life of Princess Diana, and her ancestor Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire are shocking.  :o

Hmmm, ...I'm noticing a trend. It seems I definitely have an appreciation for the elaborate period piece.  :D
...and pretty much any Merchant/Ivory production. {whispering} And I like all the Harry Potter films too  :-[

Ya, I just noticed a fondess for the period piece. I'm not sure why, ...I think it may have to do with an appreciation and understanding of how difficult a genre it is to produce. The attention to detail and authenticity is so overwhelming and the amount of work that goes into what essentially is periphery is staggering. Very daunting.
