My nephew attended college there and now lives and works in Snortland. It was better there decades ago although there were one or two areas that were best left unvisited. As of November 3, 2020 when ballot measure 110 was passed by 58% of the voters, possessing heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and other drugs for personal use is no longer a criminal offense in Oregon.
Oregon has a lower rate of death from COVID-19 than all but four states and far lower than the national average. It is 56 per thousand people So while Governor Brown has screwed up a few things like closings and openings and who get's vaccinated when, were not doing too bad overall.
California ranks 23rd out of 50 states in terms of COVID deaths per 1000 people which is at 145, almost 3 times the death rate from COVID in Oregon. Looks like Oregonians and Brown are handling things better than Californians and Newsom.
Everything and everywhere was better decades ago or so we'd like to think. My wife and I moved to Portland in 1966 shortly before our son was born. It was decidedly different here then. For one thing, almost no businesses were open on Sunday's, including restaurants. Public transportation was very inexpensive to use.
We rented a 3 bedroom house in a decent neighborhood 76 blocks from downtown for $82. a month. My co-workers couldn't understand why we'd chosen to live out in the country. LOL. The population of Portland Metro was 945,000. Today it is over 2 million. Today that house would rent for well over $2,000 a month and it essentially looks about the same as it did then.
In 1966 there were 2,400 violent crimes reported in Portland. In 2019 there were 12,000 violent crimes reported. No doubt with all that is going on last year and this that number has grown.
So yeah, it is nice to reminisce about the good old days when life was simpler. Times change, people change, politics has changed a lot. If memory serves me right, people weren't so polarized politically and radical in their thinking and actions regardless if it leaned liberal or conservative (hippies aside).
