The 5x5 wave sweeping the net....
« on: February 09, 2006, 09:30:53 AM »
What are peoples opinions on this, originally popularised in a similar form by legendary strength coach Bill Star, the program basically has you doing just deads, squats, bench, rows and missionary press. The school of thought banded around by advocates is that a conventional split routine of doing different bodyparts on different days is a waste of time for someone who doesnt posess substantial mass and also considers isolation exercises pretty much useless, again until you have a good amount of mass.Advocates also argue that a split routine is largely useless for someone who doesnt juice and split routines only came about with the steroid era and Joe Weider mags. Its argued the in the old days people got big from just doing a full body workout 3 times a week and eating big.
The program advocates that getting big, apart from diet, is by consisteently adding weight to the bar on compound exercises. The idea is that you train 3 times a week, picking 3 compound exercises per day and doing 5 sets for 5 reps for each compound exercise.A typical routine consists of below Monday
Squat   5x5
Bench   5x5
Barbell Row 5x5
    Wednesday
Squat   5x5
Incline or Military   5x5
Deadlift   5x5

    Friday
Squat   5x5,
Bench   5x5,
Barbell Row   5x5
Ive simplified the routine above, as light and heavy days are used,% of 1 rep max etc but the basic core is there.seems logical to me,for someone who doesnt and does not plan to take steroids, does this seem like a better program for that person than a split? How about for a split day regular who wants to change their routine? The program in its various forms is sure gathering a following around various forums.

the only place that program is popular is elite fitness.com, anyway, i've always thought that sets of five were great for both size and strength increases.

Any program can be effective, 5x5 is no different.   It really isn't the program itself but just the fact that it is a shake up to what someone is normally following...  the mind is refreshed, things are new and exciting again.  For a while it seems.

But most champs from the old days (pre-1965) couldn't win novice state titles today.

EF is tame........it's not the same type of forum.  I've been there.

The 5 X 5 has no advantage over any other training split, it's all about changing up the routine, shocking the muscles.

He said it, bro, not me.  I just quoted him.  My point was whatever they did then wasn't working so great.

Traditional 5x5 training methods are very effective. I use 5x5 on military presses, weighted dips, upright rows, squats, barbell curls, and pullovers. Many of the strongest bodybuilders and powerlifters used some variation of 5x5.

I don't agree that isolation exercises are "useless". Sometimes they're needed to bring up lagging bodyparts, etc.

Basic exercises like deads, squats n' benches. I think we've heard of this idea before. ;D

Compounds would be more effective than isolations for sports applications.

Splits are also good.

I know a dude doing that and it's working for him.   Brutal workout.  I would never do that.  My muscles need more rest.

I don't think in any way Isolation exercises or angled exercises contribute to weakness.  As a matter of fact, i think five sets of any exercise for one not prone to mass gains is too much, by the 5th and even 4th set the same intensity cannot be applied as in the first three sets.

5X5's will and have put on pounds of pure muscle mass on hundreds (probably thousands) of trainee's. First gain the foundation for muscular size through a basic program like this. 7x7's are another method which I favor highly as well as 10X10's.  Switch every thing around every 6-8 weeks max. Good Luck.

I've done 5x5 for bench, squat and deadlift with assistance exercises and it is
very taxing especially for a natural.

Yes, but only because steroids came into play in 1963.

Id love to do wourkout like this, or the forced/heavy breathing squat program, but bad lower back at mo kinda means im staying away from deads and even back squats (though low reps like that may b ok).ahhahhahhhhhhh

Sounds interesting. So you can't do any less than 5 reps, even on the 5th set? Hmmmm. Anyone got results?
