(WHEC) ó The Food and Drug Administration has released the names of 16 dog food brands identified in an investigation into heart problems in dogs.

The FDA announced last summer it was investigating over 500 reported cases of canine dilated cardiomyopathy beginning in 2018. They say the disease can often lead to congestive heart failure.

These are the brands the FDA listed in their warning:

    Taste of the Wild
    Earthborn Holistic
    Blue Buffalo
    Nature's Domain
    California Natural
    Natural Balance
    Nature's Valley
    Rachael Ray Nutrish

The FDA says the dogs affected mostly ate dry food that was "grain-free" and contained peas or lentils. They also say large breeds were more likely to be affected.

The FDA says symptoms of the condition include loss of energy, cough, difficulty breathing, and episodes of collapsing. If your dog is showing these symptoms the FDA urges you to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Here is the list of 16 pet food brands and the number of reported DCM cases that the FDA suspects are related to each brand:

    Acana: 67
    Zignature: 64
    Taste of the Wild: 53
    4Health: 32
    Earthborn Holistic: 32
    Blue Buffalo: 31
    Nature's Domain: 29
    Fromm: 24
    Merrick: 16
    California Natural: 15
    Natural Balance: 15
    Orijen: 12
    Nature's Variety: 11
    NutriSource: 10
    Nutro: 10
    Rachael Ray Nutrish: 10

This is highly concerning.  Many of these brands are and have been listed for years in the WDJ "approved" list.

Solid marketing on the article page with a Rachael Ray Nutrish ad right in the middle

Princess L:

You should still look for minimum 3/4 first ingredients, preferably 4/4 animal based.   IMO, that is most important. Then look at the following ingredients. But donít take grain free to ignore this. Strive for 3, better 4, animal based.
