Trump asks government agencies for plans to cut spending

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-agencies-idUSKBN17E08D?il=0

President Donald Trump, who has proposed cuts to an array of government agencies, is asking department heads to offer up plans to operate more efficiently.

Trump's budget director, Mick Mulvaney, told reporters on Tuesday he would be instructing agencies to outline how they will comply with the president's budget, which slashed spending for foreign aid and many domestic programs.

The federal hiring freeze imposed shortly after Trump entered office will be lifted on Wednesday, but agencies will be asked to remain mindful of Trump's goal to reduce the federal workforce, Mulvaney said during a briefing.

Mulvaney acknowledged that the president's budget would have to be approved by the Republican-controlled Congress, where lawmakers from both parties have balked at some of the drastic reductions.

"One of the reasons this is so difficult to do is you just can't wave a magic wand in the Oval Office and do these things," Mulvaney said. "There will be certain things for which we will need legislative authority."

In the bare bones budget issued last month, the White House did not offer many specific details on how the budget cuts would be achieved.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/apr/13/is-business-starting-to-get-spooked-about-donald-trump

Financial markets are starting to have doubts about Donald Trump. The euphoria that sent share prices on Wall Street to record levels has quickly dissipated amid fears that the new president is dangerously unpredictable.

Evidence that Trump doesn’t really have a clue what he is doing is mounting by the day. The failure to get Congress to agree to a repeal of Obamacare was the first sign of trouble, since it raised questions about whether the White House would be able to pass an economic stimulus

But there has been more to unsettle investors since then – much more. First there was the U-turn over Syria, then the sabre-rattling over North Korea. Now Trump has decided – in flat contradiction of what he said on the campaign trail – that China is not gaining an unfair trade advantage through the manipulation of its currency.
The kindest interpretation of this latest flip-flop is that Trump wants to keep Beijing sweet while the US launches military action against North Korea, although this prospect is not exactly designed to make investors any less nervous. A more accurate assessment of Trump’s first three months in the job is that he is making it up as he goes along.

Not only did Trump backtrack on China’s alleged currency manipulation in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he hinted that Janet Yellen might after all get a second term in charge of the Federal Reserve and said he thought the dollar was getting too strong.

On this last point, at least, there was some sense in what the president had to say. It is all very well sabre-rattling about the imposition of tariffs and putting taxes on imports but a rising currency would blunt the impact of any protectionist measures by making US exports dearer. That’s assuming, of course, that there will be any protectionist measures. On current form, there probably won’t be.
Trump appears to think that the strength of the dollar is a vote of confidence in him. If only. The greenback is strong because the Fed is the one major central bank in the world that is raising borrowing costs, and investors have been assuming that the US central bank will accelerate the pace of interest rate increases in response to a Trump-inspired pick up in growth. That scenario is starting to look less likely.

The response in the currency markets to Trump’s latest comments was predictable. Traders took their signal from the White House and dumped the dollar. More significantly, perhaps, demand for gold and the Japanese yen – traditional safe havens in times of uncertainty – rose to their highest level since the US presidential election last November.

Share prices remain close to their record highs but for how long? Cannier investors have taken one look at Trump’s Dr Strangelove-style foreign policy antics and decided to park their money elsewhere. US defence stocks look like a decent bet; the rest of the stock market does not. Caveat emptor.

Gun manufacturer to build $22.5 million factory in Tennessee
SCCY sets gun sights on Maryville for 350-job plant

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/business/aroundregion/story/2017/apr/12/gun-manufacturer-moves-factory-tennessee/422561/

For the second time in the past year, a gun manufacturer has announced plans to begin making firearms in Tennessee.

SSCY Industries LLC, which specializes in making pistols and sidearms in Daytona Beach, Fla,  said today it plans to construct a 150,00-square-foot facility in Maryville that will create more than 350 jobs when it is in full operation next year. The $22.5 million plant will become the primary manufacturing facility for SCCY.

"SCCY Industries has been searching for a new home for many years due to our explosive growth in the shooting sports industry," Joe Roebuck, SCCY founder and CEO, said. "We exhaustively searched many states. After doing so, I found Tennessee to be one of the top manufacturing states and, in my opinion, No. 1 in the East. I have owned and operated several manufacturing companies during my career as a product developer and businessman. Success all comes down to people, and Tennessee seems to boast good old-fashioned American work ethic.

The announcement of SCCY coming to Tennessee comes a year after Italian gun maker Beretta relocated its U.S. factory from Accookeek, Maryland to Gallatin, Tenn., where the company built a 160,000-square-foot factory. Beretta hopes to grow its $45 million manufacturing facility in Middle Tennessee to eventually employ 300 workers.

Initial jobless claims cling near post-recession low

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Initial jobless claims were essentially unchanged at 234,000 in early April, holding near extremely low levels that show the U.S. labor market is going strong despite a slowdown in hiring last month.

Economists polled by MarketWatch has expected new jobless claims to total 245,000 in the seven days stretching from April 2 to April 8.

The more stable monthly average of jobless claims was somewhat higher at 247,250, the government said Thursday.

The number of new applications for unemployment benefits has registered less than 300,000 for 110 straight weeks, the best performance since the 1970.

The ultra-low rate of layoffs shows the labor market is still quite strong — no surprise after a record 78 months of employment gains. Economists view the slowdown in new jobs created in March as a weather-related blip that does not reflect the true health of a robust U.S. labor market.

The U.S. added a modest 98,000 new jobs last month after 200,000-plus gains in both January and February.

Meanwhile, continuing jobless claims, or the number of people already collecting unemployment checks, fell by 7,000 to 2.03 million.

U.S. forces have dropped what is known as the "mother of all bombs" in Afghanistan. The device is the largest non-nuclear device in the Air Force arsenal, Fox News' Jennifer Griffin reported. It was dropped in Nangarhar Province, an eastern area near the Pakistan border. It's the first time the 21,000-pound ordnance has been used in combat, said Griffin. The device, developed in 2003 by the U.S. Air Force, is called the M.O.A.B, short for Massive Ordnance Air Blast. It's often referred to as the "mother of all bombs." Watch the report above.

Former Clinton State Dept Employee Arrested - Concealed Numerous Foreign Intelligence Contacts
The Washington Standard ^ | 04-13-2017 | Tim Brown
Posted on 4/13/2017, 1:15:38 PM by ReformedMedia

I, both felony offenses, for allegedly concealing numerous contacts that she had over a period of years with foreign intelligence agents, according to a federal complaint that was unsealed at the end of March.

Ms. Claiborne began working as an Office Management Specialist for the Department of State in 1999. She has served overseas at a number of posts, including embassies and consulates in Baghdad, Iraq, Khartoum, Sudan, and Beijing and Shanghai, China.

According to a statement by the Justice Department:

As a condition of her employment, Claiborne maintains a Top Secret security clearance. Claiborne also is required to report any contacts with persons suspected of affiliation with a foreign intelligence agency.

Despite such a requirement, the affidavit alleges, Claiborne failed to report repeated contacts with two intelligence agents of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), even though these agents provided tens of thousands of dollars in gifts and benefits to Claiborne and her family over five years.

According to the affidavit, the gifts and benefits included cash wired to Claiborne’s USAA account, an Apple iPhone and laptop computer, Chinese New Year’s gifts, meals, international travel and vacations, tuition at a Chinese fashion school, a fully furnished apartment, and a monthly stipend. Some of these gifts and benefits were provided directly to Claiborne, the affidavit alleges, while others were provided through a co-conspirator.

Claiborne wrote in her journal that she could "Generate 20k in 1 year" by simply working with one of the PRC agents.  After wiring Claiborne $2,480, the agent then asked for Ms. Claiborne to provide internal U.S. Government analyses on a U.S.-Sino Strategic Economic Dialogue that had just concluded in May 2011.

She failed to report the incident as required.  At least two other co-conspirators are named in the affidavit.

I can hear the tears falling now, along with screams of racism...

Report – ICE to Deport 4,000 Somali Muslim Migrants

In an interview, Somalia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ahmed Isse Awad said the number of Somalis ICE is looking to deport is at least 4,000, with the vast majority not being currently held in immigration detention centers.

“We learned through immigration sources that the total number of the Somalis that are in the books of [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to be removed are close to 4,000,” Awad told Voice of America.
Over the course of the next few months, Awad said some 300 Somalis would be deported, saying he was waiting for information as to who those deportees would be.

The numbers released by the ambassador show a steep departure from the days of lax immigration enforcement under the Bush and Obama Administrations.

Awad said that during Obama’s last two years in office, only 170 Somalis were deported for either committing crimes or having their asylum requests rejected.

The Trump Administration is expected to double that number in a few months.

That was my answer about 15 years ago. Today I'm just tired of it. I'm tired of sending our sons and daughters off to die for the elite. I'm tired of spending money fighting the next boogey man.

The US is always at war with someone and it's tiresome. Aren't you sick of it?
