Robert Reich: Do it with 51 votes
« on: February 23, 2010, 09:45:51 AM »
Wasn't this guy getting props nonstop from the far-right getbig members recently?

Do it with 51 votes
The 60-vote requirement for healthcare is made up. 51 is a majority, and it's all we need
By Robert Reich

So what’s been stopping Obama from using reconciliation? Even if some of the arguments held water before now, none does any longer.

My free advice to the President: If you want to get healthcare enacted you must use reconciliation and quickly. Host your bipartisan gab fest at the White House on Thursday. Tell Republicans you’ve been eagerly awaiting their ideas for over a year, but the American public can’t wait any longer. Explain to them how our current economic mess is directly related to the health care mess -- we’re paying 16 percent of our GDP for health care while health insurers are hiking rates and Americans are losing their health insurance every day. Then tell the House and Senate to get to work on putting their bills together (or tell the House Dems to enact the Senate bill and then save their disagreements for reconciliation), and tell Harry Reid you want the Senate bill on a fast track of reconciliation.

Explain to the American people you understand their impatience. The Constitution does not require 60 votes in the Senate to pass legislation. A majority will do. That’s called democracy.

This isn't about the American public. This is about the Dems, wanting to impose this mess on the American people. The GOP has been locked out of the conversation, time and time again. So, this whole pathetic attempt by Team Obama to paint the Republicans as having no ideas is just plain pathetic and few (if any) are buying it.

The American people want Washington to START FROM SCRATCH and do this the right way. Obama and his posse have no plans of doing that and they really don't want any bi-partianship. This summit on Thursday is PR gimmick and nothing more.

So Politicians from Counties that have Universal Health Care go elsewhere when it is their health on the line.

and...

Our very own Politicians have exempted themselves from getting Obama Care

Anyone still think this Bill is a good thing ?

The mere fact that the Dems would have to resort to the nuclear option (which will do little but guarantee that they get killed this November) simply shows that the American people DO NOT WANT this garbage.

The American people want Washington to start over. And, that's what Washington should do, end of story.

Moron.  They are not reforming anything.  This is nothing more than a massive tax hike masqerading as a health bill.

Exactly. "Gatorade", the "Lousiana Purchase", and the "Cornhusker Kickback" were put in place to ensure that thsoe states (Florida, Lousiana, and Nebraska, respectively) don't get screwed like the rest of the nation.

And, you're dead on the money. Why is the Canadian Premier coming here to save his hide, if his country's healthcare is all that?

Left up to their system, this guy would be DEAD.

No ideas? How about tort reform, allowing people to buy insurance across state lines.Republicans had MANY ideas but the stupid ass democrats are hell bent on two thing.DESTROYING private insurance companies and government run health care.Considering how well the government runs everything else,it should be a great thing for the country.

And, since Obama's made it clear that he's "considering" hiking taxes on people who makes under $250,000, Mons Venus is effectively cheering for his own taxes to get shot to the ceiling.

I have to say on the Canadian coming to America, i support a universal health care system with the option to purchase private insurance if you have the money.  I think a fully universal system is flawed with wait times etc, but unfortunately in Canada you can not purchase private insurance to cover costs and a lot of places don't have private hospitals at a high standard.  A mix of the two is the best option IMO.  However, people will go on about this Canadian going to the states but i can gurantee a huge majority of Canadians would not trade their health care for this American mess.  No freaking way.  Anyone of them who has been hurt and not been bankrupted by higher premiums or denial of claim will tell you that much.  As well as the majority who have the piece of mind to not worry that their costs will go up if they are found to have cancer, heart issues or a family history of some disease.
Abandon every hope...

Republican Gov. Schwarzenegger agrees with me! :D :D :D

WASHINGTON — While Republican leaders in Washington are urging President Barack Obama to start from scratch on a health care bill, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday dismissed the idea as "bogus talk"

"I think any Republican that says you should start from scratch, I think that's bogus talk, and that's partisan talk," the governor told reporters.
