CIA chief, Porter Goss fired
« on: May 07, 2006, 05:47:10 AM »
I don’t care how much self esteem and confidence you have, getting fired so publicly represents humiliation on a grand scale.  :-[

The implosion continues.

CIA chief Goss quiet on abrupt departure

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Porter Goss said on Saturday his reasons for abruptly resigning as CIA chief after less than two years would remain a mystery, while the White House denied that President Bush had lost confidence in him.

As Goss left his home Saturday on his way to give a commencement address in Ohio, he declined to explain his resignation, telling CNN that "it's one of those mysteries."

Goss had come under fire inside and outside the agency during a difficult tenure that followed intelligence lapses over Iraq and the September 11 attacks on the United States. Several career intelligence officers left after clashes.

The White House denied a report in the Washington Post that cited senior administration officials as saying that Bush had lost confidence in Goss and had decided to replace him months ago.

"Reports that the president had lost confidence in Porter Goss are categorically untrue," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said as Bush flew to Oklahoma State University to deliver a commencement address.

"Porter Goss played a key role in keeping the focus on winning the war on terror and helped transform the agency to meet the challenging times we're living in and the times ahead," she said.

Congressional aides have described growing talk in recent days about unhappiness with Goss, not only with his leadership, but also with reports of connections between CIA executive director Kyle "Dusty" Foggo and a bribery scandal that led to the jailing of former California Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

The Washington Post reported that Foggo, whom Goss elevated to the senior post, had attended poker games with a military contractor linked to the Cunningham case.

The CIA inspector general has been investigating Foggo, and the newspaper said the probe includes whether he arranged any contracts for the contractor. The Post also reported that Foggo told colleagues he planned to resign next week and he has denied any impropriety.

A CIA spokesman declined to comment . . .

Another poor Bush choice that was obvious to most to begin with, that led to departures of good people from the agency. Thankfully Negroponte and others forced the issue rather than let it linger; they don't have time to waste in getting the situation fixed at a critical time.

Especially when they walk out there and everyone pretends it was a resignation.  ha ha ha ha

Doom disapproves of Goss and approves of his firing.

This president wipes his ass with the CIA almost as often as he does with the Constitution.

Exactly; if it wasn't essential they'd probably have let him hang around another few years, like Rumsfield.

He needs to go. I mean you gotta listen to the guys on the ground. He won't listen to Gen wallace as he was pushing up toward Bagdad. Wallace's guys were watching the Fedeyeen Saddam roll south and were not aloud to open fire. Read Generation Kill about 1st MEF/1st Recon Bn rolling up the Tigris. It was written as a series of articles by a rolling Stone reporter.Great book, they said the same thing. As military operations go, it was very smooth. Arabs can't fight conventional western forces based on old soviet tactics. If you use soviet equipment you have to fight the soviet way. They couldn't. Fight an insurgency they can do. I really can't believe he has lasted this long.

First he fires Porter Goss... now, Negreponte fires himself by stepping down...  What's going on in the intelligence community? ???

Negroponte stepping aside as top spy to become deputy secretary of state
From the Associated Press

4:45 PM PST, January 3, 2007

Washington — National Intelligence Director John Negroponte will resign to become deputy secretary of state, a government official said Wednesday night.

Negroponte took over in 2005 as the nation's first intelligence chief, responsible for overseeing all 16 U.S. spy agencies. He will return to his roots as a career diplomat to become the No. 2 to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the official said.

Negroponte is stepping down as President Bush develops a new strategy for the war in Iraq.

The official said that the timing of Negroponte's departure was uncertain but that it was expected soon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because there has been no announcement of the move.

A spokesman for the Office of the National Intelligence Director declined to comment.

In an interview with C-SPAN last month, Negroponte indicated that he wanted to stay on through the Bush administration.

Yet his answer to the question -- will he "stay with it for a while?" -- didn't close to door to a new assignment. Since last summer, it has been said he was interested in the vacancy at the State Department.

"In my own mind at least, I visualize staying with it through the end of this administration and, then I think, probably that'll be about the right time to pack it in," he told C-SPAN.

The neoconservatives are all getting jobs in the pvt sector.

Dunno if he'll follow suit.  Most are cashing in on favors they curried during years 106 of the pilferage.
