My advice would be to hire a competent installer.

Are you referring to Window air conditioners...or the Ductless split systems?

Mostly these are usefull in older houses with no space for ducts.
You snake the tubing through the wall, attic, ceilings like an electrician would cables.

Usually older houses are leaky enough for fresh air to infiltrate.

Have heard no complaints...when I visit someone with them, it feels just fine.

Personally my house had an attic big enough for ducts, so I have no personal experience.

In a district of Houston called the "Heights", which was built in the early 20th century...In the 60' and 70's, the housing was air conditioned largely with window units.  In the rental housing, (houses, duplexes, and garage apartments) The appropriate window would have an appropriate electric outlet near, and the tenant would put in a window unit upon moving in.

Thanks. Any advice on the brand? I've heard very good things on all but I want to buy top of the line. Mitsubishi comes to mind... their heeting/cooling units, albeit expensive as fuck, are compact and easy to install.

I am looking to do the installation myself... except for the electrical part, which a friend is going to help me with.

I have never personally dealt with a split system, so I have no knowlege about the brands.
Again though I do know that you deal with the lines the same way electricians deal with cabling.
Skill with patching drywall is handy.
You will probably cut a small hole at the end of each segment of a line so you can snake the thing.  Later you patch the holes.  I have seen cabling and drywall contractors team up.  The electrician/structured cabling contractors run lines using strategically cut holes. Then after the new lines are connected and tested, the drywall guy patches the wall and where the holes were are completely invisible.

Some houses are still using window units. ;D

Although the Heights area is changing at a fast pace.
