WaPo’s Eugene Robinson: Biden Speech an ‘Urgent Wartime Address’
Breitbart ^ | 09/02/2022 | Jeff Poor
Posted on 9/2/2022, 10:41:05 AM

Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson heralded President Joe Biden’s speech in Philadelphia the night earlier as an “urgent wartime address.”

According to Robinson, it was “significant” that Biden called out his predecessor and “MAGA Republicans.

“The speech last night to me sounded like a president delivering a wartime address,” he said. “And indeed, Joe Biden sees this as a battle for the soul of our country. It’s a battle for the preservation of our democracy. To me, the significant thing was, yes, he called out Donald Trump — but he also called out the MAGA Republicans, the MAGA Republican officials and followers, who, for whatever motive, under whatever delusion, are going down this authoritarian path, this undemocratic path and trying to take the nation with them. And he framed this as an emergency, as something that we as a nation need to bond together and to stop, to reverse and to return to our democratic principles and our democratic practices, and to me, it was an urgent wartime address.”

How Bad Was Biden’s Oppressive Stage Presence? CNN Altered the Video Feed to Soften the Dire Visuals
https://redstate.com ^ | By Brad Slager | Sep 02, 2022 10:00 AM ET
Posted on 9/2/2022, 11:20:37 AM

We now wait to see if any of the fact-checking and social media authorities call out CNN for altering news footage.

Here in the aftermath of Joe Biden’s bold, forceful, authoritative, badgering, hectoring, screeching, off-the-rails unPresidential speech on Thursday evening, there are a number of ways to see how poorly received this was. On content alone, this was quite the disturbing delivery, as we watched our president devolve into a hysteric, carping and complaining about Republicans and leveling accusatory hyperbole like we have not seen from the White House prior.

Another indicator that this thing jumped the trestle and plunged into a PR ravine is that the man once hailed by the media as The Great Uniter now needs this performance to be cleaned up by the media immediately following his display. As expected, the news net gabbing heads were all enthralled by this. Amusingly Aaron Rupar says Biden was “Challenging people to listen to their better angels,” after he clearly did not listen to this un-Cherubic rant. Then, most pathetic of all, Bidden staffer Rob Flaherty dared to suggest Biden’s speech was on par with one from George Washington.

It was so bad that the networks managed to depart from the post-game coverage in rather brisk fashion.

Then there is CNN. In an astoundingly blatant case of rewriting history in real-time, the network offered its feed of the speech sporting a distinctive look, and the manipulation is astounding. One detail of tonight’s appearance that many were commenting on was that the administration officials were intent on presenting Biden in a dramatic, serious fashion. The staging was notable and rather arresting. (Maybe they pulled former ABC News producer James Goldston over for the task, as he is currently on a break from dressing up the January 6 Commission for primetime.)

After looking over the severity of these images let us take a moment and think back to a reaction from the press regarding Donald Trump. One day at 1600 Penn, he stepped outside for a media moment and removed his COVID mask for the press. Journalists dubbed this his “Mussolini Moment” – for making a daytime White House appearance. Note the lack of any similar move of casting Biden in a totalitarian light from them tonight.

This does not mean, however, that they did not pick up on it. The stark red lighting, Marines stationed for the cameras – it was a dire and venal display. Here is all we need to know the Independence Hall stagecraft in Philadelphia was a complete failure of optics – CNN worked to recast the scene – live.

The network’s live feed and on-screen replays completely altered the lighting effects. Here we have a (supposedly) major and serious news outlet manipulating the live video to show a calmer, magenta-hued lighting scheme, in order to cast Biden in a less severe setting.

This is both amazing and rather disturbing. While all other networks showed the harsh-hued backdrop in all of its oppressive glory, CNN – quite literally – opts to cast Joe in a kinder light. It appears that newly arrived CEO Chris Licht has a long way to go with his effort to move his news network closer to the political center.

‘Grim Old Man Screaming’: Ben Shapiro, Others React To Biden’s Dark Speech Before Eerie Red Backdrop
The Daily Wire ^ | Sep 2, 2022 | By Greg Wilson
Posted on 9/2/2022, 11:10:52

President Joe Biden’s prime-time speech Thursday night, which featured a blood-red backdrop and a grim warning about the endangered “soul of America,” drew fierce reactions online, with critics branding the content divisive and the theatrics just plain weird.

Biden, who framed the upcoming midterm elections as a fight between good and evil, stood flanked by U.S. Marines outside Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. Unusual red lighting cast a fiery glow on the brick building as Biden railed against supporters of former President Trump, who he said have taken over the Republican Party.

“MAGA Republicans have made their choice,” Biden declared. “They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth, but in the shadow of lies. Together, we can choose a different path.”

Critics called the speech divisive, but the strange stagecraft prompted equal outrage. The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro called the speech “the most demagogic, outrageous, and divisive speech I have ever seen from an American president,” and posted a screenshot of Biden with his clenched fists raised and face contorted with passion.

“This image is the worst piece of presidential optics I have ever seen,” Shapiro wrote. “Let us count the reasons.1. Lighting a historic American site — the site of our founding documents — blood red. 2. The red-and-black background against the front-lit visage of a grim old man screaming at Americans, fists clenched.”

Former ambassador to Germany and Trump’s acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell said Biden’s over-the-top condemnation of Trump supporters, who numbered 74 million in the 2020 election, was telling.

“This blood red setting and negative complaining about political opponents means one thing — Joe Biden is really nervous that Donald Trump is going to run again,” Grenell tweeted.

Former Trump White House press secretary and current Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany branded the background demonic and the rhetoric divisive.

“Standing in front of a hellish red background Biden called half the country, the MAGA Republicans ‘threats’ & ‘clear and present dangers,'” McEnany tweeted. “Then he says, ’empathy is the fuel of democracy-the willingness to see each other not as enemies but as fellow Americans…’!!!”

Biden has stepped up his rhetoric against political opponents in recent days, branding Trump supporters as “semi-fascists.” The White House insisted that his criticisms were not directed at all Republicans, although in the past, Biden has called moderate Republicans such as Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin extremists.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Biden has contributed mightily to division in America, and put his opponents’ safety in jeopardy.

“Joe Biden’s wretched attacks on millions of Americans have fueled attacks on pregnancy centers, Republican offices, and an assassination attempt on a Supreme Court Justice,” McDaniel said. “His agenda has pitted neighbors against each other, rewarded the wealthy while punishing working families, and trampled on the rights and freedoms of Americans. Joe Biden is the divider-in-chief and epitomizes the current state of the Democrat Party: one of divisiveness, disgust, and hostility towards half the country.”

White House defends presence of Marines at Biden speech
The hill ^ | 09/02/2022 | Alex Gangitano

The White House on Friday defended the presence of U.S. Marines at President Biden’s speech in Philadelphia the previous evening, arguing their positioning during the prime-time speech was to demonstrate the president’s respect for service members.

“The presence of the Marines at the speech was intended to demonstrate the deep and abiding respect the president has for these service members to these ideals and the unique role our independent military plays in defending our democracy no matter which party is in power,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

The Democrat left, financial markets, and your life savings
American Thinker ^ | 6 Sep, 2022 | James Mullin
Posted on 9/6/2022, 8:03:20 AM

You don’t have to be a financial professional to recognize that the economic signs aren’t just not good but are, instead, very, very bad.

Like many of you, I’ve seen my retirement assets decline by 20% just since January. So let me state something that I’ve been avoiding focusing on myself. There is no way that a free market, capitalist financial system (the stock market) can do well under the leftist self-immolating insanity that now governs America. (California’s law forbidding sales of gasoline-powered vehicles—you know, the ones that work and are affordable—perfectly illustrates this trend.). I’m not a financial advisor, and can’t give you financial advice, but my common sense tells me we may well be witnessing the early stages of a financial downturn that could dwarf 1929.

Forget “buy the dips.” It’s now time to sell the mini recoveries. The smart money seems to be doing just that. Look at a graph of the Nasdaq since December 2022. I’m not sure where their money is going, but I suspect real estate and hard assets. High-end artwork, for example, they can sell among themselves, so it likely never goes down.

To risk confusing the hell out of you, please don’t buy completely into what I’m selling here. I could easily be wrong. After all, the recent coziness between big tech and the Democrat left is pure fascism (read about Mussolini’s Italy), and could actually work to “protect” certain “favored” segments of the economy. But maybe not.

Hedge your bets. Be smart. Admit you can’t see everything. The Left won’t admit that much, which is its Achilles Heel. Central planning or socialism or Marxism—whatever you want to call it but what we now have raining down on us like volcanic ash—is pure hubris in the final denouement.

Why Are We Surprised by Biden’s Speech?-The epitome of the Democrat Party’s totalitarian instincts.
Frontpagemagazine ^ | Sep 5, 2022 | Bruce Thornton
Posted on 9/6/2022, 10:34:29 AM by SJackson

Last week’s speech by Joe Biden was the epitome of the Democrat Party’s totalitarian instincts. Even the banana-republic staging–– two Marines flanking the president, the lurid blood-red lighting, and a photo of Biden orating with raised fists––evoked the theatrics beloved by dictators. The burden of the speech was the dangerous “semi-fascism” of Donald Trump and his millions of MAGA supporters, which similarly recalled the “enemies of the state” like Jews, “deviationists,” and kulaks that typify autocratic regimes, as do the numerous “big lies” lacing Biden’s rant.

All this has been noted and deservedly criticized by commentators, some of them even on CNN. But the implications that the Dems and Biden have violated some venerable norms of “our democracy” were puzzling. For nearly 60 years the Democrats have been relentlessly moving farther to the Left and adopting its vicious “any means necessary” tactics for acquiring and keeping power. All it needed to reach a wider audience were decades of an educational system corrupted by leftist ideology.

But even before the chaos and degradation of politics in the Sixties got this malignant ball rolling, starting in the late 19th century Marxism had gained a foothold in our culture and politics. Progressivism was the political philosophy that was the vehicle of Marxist assumptions that both ideologies share.

Like Marxism, progressivism favors centralized power, technocratic control, the perfectibility of people, and the pretensions of “science” as the means for undermining the Constitution’s limited, balanced, and divided powers. This constitutional structure is necessitated by a human nature driven by zero-sum “passions and interests” that need power in order to be realized. And both ideologies scorned the Founders’ principles of federalism, unalienable human rights, individual freedom, traditional wisdom, common sense, and civil society.

The Great Depression was the crisis that facilitated FDR’s legislation that realized many of the progressives’ goals, creating a technocratic managerial elite that over the following years expanded its power and scope. Unalienable rights that precede government were challenged by the new “rights” created by government such as FDR’s “Second Bill of Rights.” By the postwar period, these innovations had created the bipartisan political guild who manage the ever-growing federal Leviathan.

The similarities between Marxism’s and progressivism’s foundational philosophies created a potential space for Marxists, particularly cultural Marxists, to flourish in our popular culture and universities. That influence made a quantum leap in the Sixties, when the New Left exploded onto the political scene, employing all the usual tactics of Marxism such as propaganda, violence, and a rhetoric increasingly vicious and preposterous in its blatant lies.

The results were soon noticeable in our politics. Conservative politicians and voters were regularly demonized by media and popular culture with coarse rhetoric and accusations of “racism” and “fascism.” Richard Nixon was the first to receive this treatment, including a dubious Watergate scandal some now claim was partly an FBI operation. Nixon’s constituency, the “Silent Majority” and “Moral Majority” of traditional Americans, came in for the same abuse, dismissed as racist and misogynists, repressed religious bigots itching to burn at the stake feminists, minorities, communists, and homosexuals.

In the following years this pattern repeated itself with Ronald Reagan and both Bushes. The increasingly left-leaning Dems and their media PR firms dismissed Reagan as an “amiable dunce” who carried water for corporate hegemons, and whose bellicose “evil empire” rhetoric and “Star-Wars” fantasy weapons would trigger an arms race and ignite nuclear war with the Soviets.

As for George W. Bush, he had, with the help of the Supreme Court, “stolen the election” from Al Gore. He was “selected,” the Left cried, “not elected.” Dems smeared him as “Bushitler,” a draft-dodging, imbecilic chicken-hawk whose disdain for diplomacy, and inveterate Islamophobia triggered neo-imperialist “endless wars” in the Middle East in order to enrich corporations like Haliburton and appropriate the region’s oil.

The presidency of Barack Obama, another faux “healer” of our divisions, was predicated on this same old received wisdom about Republicans and their constituents. He called the latter fearful, repressed “bitter clingers” to guns and religion, xenophobes lashing out against globalism and foreigners to compensate for their failure to succeed in the “new world” economic order. His anointed successor, Hillary Clinton, reprised this progressive gospel with her “basket of deplorables” dismissal of her rival Donald Trump’s supporters.

This long Democrat tradition of insult and invective reached its nadir of vicious absurdity with the unprecedented hatred of Donald Trump and his supporters, abetted by corrupted federal agencies like the DOJ and FBI. Biden’s recent speech was the logical conclusion of this long practice by an increasingly left-wing Democrat Party.

Yet it would be a mistake to think that this political assault is a violation of some venerable American tradition of political decorum and norms. From its beginnings in the Revolution, the country has been riven by conflicts among the various factions created by the Colonies’ complex diversity of settlement patterns, faiths, economic interests, customs, and mores.

This diversity has created the divisiveness of America’s “factions” driven by diverse “passions and interests.” Such political behavior, as Madison wrote, is “sown in the nature of man,” a non-negotiable, permanent feature of human identity and behavior. Hence it cannot be eliminated by increasing progress, material improvement, and education. Moreover, given the diversity of the country, it cannot be regulated or softened by norms of decorum. “Free men,” Sophocles said, “have free tongue,” and free speech will reflect the diversity of styles of speaking.

This melancholy fact of human nature meant that the Constitution’s highest purpose was to check and balance factions: “Ambition must be set against ambition,” Madison wrote. The purpose of checks and balances, divided government, and unalienable rights was to prevent factions from coalescing into a unit large enough to dominate other factions––just what we are seeing today with progressive absorption of popular culture, corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions. And that dynamic explains the progressive desire to dismantle other Constitutional guardrails such as state sovereignty, the electoral college, the equal number of senators, and the integrity of the Supreme Court by packing it.

So the incendiary, divisive rhetoric of Joe Biden is not the issue. From a historical perspective, it’s been the norm, from the Loyalists of the Revolution, to the disorder and political violence that followed the diverse state governments created during the war; the fierce conflict between federalists and champions of democracy during the Constitutional Convention; and the divisive clashes between the first political parties.

Diversity begets divisiveness, and the latter can be mitigated only by homogenizing the former into an abstract, unitary “people” with uniform interests that only a centralized, concentrated federal power can serve. But given how indelible diversity and individualism are, this reduction of the diversity of the people will only happened under a tyranny that monopolizes force and limits freedom.

Complaining about Joe Biden’s intensifying of the Dems’ abusive rhetoric for the last six decades is belaboring the obvious. What we need right now from the Republicans and conservatives is a plan of action for pushing back against not words, but deeds––the ongoing assault on the Constitution and our unalienable rights that the progressive Democrats have been waging for over a century, culminating in the manifest disasters of Biden’s presidency.

This undermining of the Constitution is more serious than the alleged decline of the “civility” and “decorum” that seldom have existed in our political history. We have traveled a long way down the road to tyranny, as the current assaults on the Bill of Rights, and the encroaching power of federal agencies on civil society and personal autonomy demonstrate–– as do the bungling and willful malfeasance of the Dems’ policies that have weakened every dimension of our existence.

Fifty-six percent of general election voters view President Joe Biden’s speech, where he cast Republicans as “threats to the foundations of our republic,” as unacceptable, a Tuesday Trafalgar Group poll found.

The poll asked respondents, “What is your opinion of President Biden’s recent primetime address to the nation in which he accused his political opponents of representing ‘an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic’?”

Biden Admin Is Placing Vending Machines Filled With Drug Supplies in Rural Kentucky
Washington Free Beacon ^ | Patrick Hauf • September 7, 2022 5:00 am
Posted on 9/7/2022, 9:59:18 AM by Red Badger

$3.6 million project will distribute syringes to country's overdose 'epicenter'

The Biden administration is set to spend $3.6 million to deploy vending machines filled with drug supplies in rural Kentucky—an effort the Biden administration claims will reduce stigma for drug users.

The project from the National Institutes of Health was launched in August and will study the effectiveness of "harm reduction kiosks" in rural Appalachia that contain "injection equipment, naloxone, fentanyl test strips, hygiene kits, condoms, and other supplies." The vending machines allow drug users to obtain items such as syringes without interacting with a health professional, in hopes of eliminating the "stigma" that comes with visiting an in-person harm reduction facility, according to the health agency.

The White House referenced the project in an August 31 press release on its actions taken "to address addiction and the overdose epidemic." The administration has adopted a wide range of harm reduction policies, which aim to make illicit drug use safer rather than eliminate it.

The Washington Free Beacon in February reported that the Department of Health and Human Services was set to fund the distribution of crack pipes through a $30 million harm reduction grant program. The administration backed off the funding plans amid public backlash, and the New York Times reported that the uproar over plans to fund crack pipes "derailed" Biden's drug policy agenda. The White House, however, still appears willing to adopt controversial harm reduction policies—the New York Times reported in July that Biden's drug czar Dr. Rahul Gupta was supportive of legalized injection sites, which allow users to take drugs with supervision from health professionals.

The new study, which is conducted by the University of Kentucky, appears to be the first effort from the federal government to deploy harm-reduction vending machines. Harm reduction vending machines have been popularized in Canada, Australia, and other countries. A few U.S. states, including New York, Rhode Island, Ohio, and Nevada, have deployed the machines in recent years. The machines sometimes include smoking kits, which in many cases include crack pipes.

The University of Kentucky declined to comment, directing the Free Beacon‘s inquiry to the NIH. The National Institute on Drug Abuse, which heads the project at the NIH, told the Free Beacon that along with drug paraphernalia, the vending machines will include "food kits, water, socks and gloves, feminine hygiene products, wound care, and resources/guides." The agency did not respond to questions regarding the status of the kiosk program.

Terrible.

Janet Yellen admits ‘risk’ US gas prices could surge again this winter
NY Post ^ | 09/12/2022 | Thomas Barrabi
Posted on 9/12/2022, 10:41:42 AM

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen admitted there is a “risk” that US gas prices will surge again this winter after months of steady declines.

Yellen cited potentially fraught conditions in Europe as members of the European Union wean off Russian oil shipments and mull the imposition of a price cap in response to the brutal invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s a risk and it’s a risk that we’re working on the price cap to try to address,” Yellen said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “This winter, the European Union will cease, for the most part, buying Russian oil and in addition, they will ban the provision of services that enable Russia to ship oil by tanker. It is possible that could cause a spike in oil prices.”

“Our price cap proposal is designed to both lower Russian revenues that they use to support their economy and fight this illegal war while also maintaining Russian oil supplies to hold down global oil prices,” Yellen added

Inflation hits 8.3% in August — worse than expected despite falling gas prices

US inflation rose by a higher-than-expected 8.3% in August despite falling gasoline prices — adding pressure on the Federal Reserve as it decides whether to impose another super-size interest rate hike.

The August reading of the Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index, a closely watched measure of the costs of goods and services, rose 0.1% compared to July. Economists had expected a slight month-over-month decline.

American households remained under severe pressure. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and gas prices, rose 6.3% year-over-year and 0.6% compared to July.

Headline inflation ticked lower as gas prices continued to recede from record highs reached in June. The national average price of a gallon of gas was $3.707 as of Monday, down from a peak of more than $5 in mid-June.

But the price of other daily necessities such as food, rent and many consumer goods have stayed uncomfortably high for cash-strapped Americans.

The Biden Administration Is Engaged in a Massive Censorship Campaign
National Review ^ | September 11, 2022 | Kenin M. Spivak

The bedrock of American democracy, the First Amendment, prohibits Congress from making laws “abridging the freedom of speech.” The Supreme Court has repeatedly applied this prohibition to executive actions, as well.

The Biden administration’s campaign to censor, demonetize, and suppress dissenting voices on social media is much broader than previously known, as demonstrated by an amended complaint filed last month in federal district court in the case of Missouri v. Biden. The complaint, by the Louisiana and Missouri attorneys general along with the New Civil Liberties Alliance on behalf of leading health-care professionals, provides strong evidence of the administration’s vigorous campaign to coerce and collude with social-media companies in suppressing and deplatforming criticism of the administration as well as views with which it disagrees on subjects such as Covid, elections, the Hunter Biden laptop, and climate change, among others.

The evidence shows that at least 80 senior officials have participated in a concerted federal enterprise involving at least eleven federal agencies, including the White House, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of the Surgeon General, Census Bureau, and FBI. The manifestly unconstitutional public–private partnership between the administration and Big Tech disregards Chief Justice Warren Burger’s warning that it is “axiomatic that a state may not induce, encourage or promote private persons to accomplish what it is constitutionally forbidden to accomplish.”

Responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and emails produced in discovery show that White House, DHS, and HHS officials flagged specific content and examples of content for censorship, including factually accurate dissenting views, under the guise of suppressing “domestic terrorism.”
