Title: What's with all the pillows?
Post by: Thin Lizzy on January 27, 2008, 06:44:51 AM
I've seen this a number of times. On their beds, women have an arrangement of like 20 pillows. What's the point of this?

I have 6 pillows and use 4 to sleep.  If we are at a hotel and there are only 4 pillows I will sleep w/3 and my husband will use one.  If we are at a hotel w/only 2 pillows I will use 1 and a rolled up towel.

I don't have decorative pillows.  I don't even want to make they bed let alone put all those fru fru pillows back on.

I have 4 pillows and a body pillow.  I use 2 pillows for my head and the body pillow.  I have a king size bed so the other 2 pillows may or may not be being used  8)

All those pillows can really add up.

A while ago I was shopping with an epicure friend of mine and came across an $800 pillow!  I have to admit, it felt absolutely sumptuous!  :P

When I asked the clerk if it was a typo she said no.  She went on to say that she had a similar pillow but it was one grade below.  The one she had was $400 and she only had it because of her employee discount which made it $200. She said she slept on it every night and that it was her prized possession!  No one else is ever allowed to touch it.  She told me her boyfriend tried to touch it once and she warned him not to do so... when he touched it anyway, she kicked him out!  ha ha ha ha ha

Note, when you have an $800 pillow, you don't put it in an $8 pillow case--you put it in an $80 pillow case.  And no one buys just one pillow; they are purchased in pairs: 2, 4, 6, etc.  Now, throw in a goose down comforter, a duvet cover, fitted & flat sheets, throw pillows, and an upscale mattress and those ritzy display beds you see all tricked out... can easily approach $10,000.  :o

$800?  Does it stop or minimize snoring?

No.  But having felt that pillow, I can honestly tell you that I wanted one (or two).  I have never felt anything like it before or since.  :)

Alas, no.  I suppose I could look for it the next time I am in that store... and report back.

What is the most you would pay for a pillow?

Have you ever slept on a $10,000 bed?

I'd buy that...and yes NO ONE could touch it.

Does the store have a website?

What is the most you would pay or a pillow?

It would depend on the pillow and how much I loved it.  If it cured snoring I would pay one million dollars!

Have you ever slept on a $10,000 bed?

Not that I'm aware of

I'm all for it. I gotta have a reat sleeping enviroment and I have to be comfortable. The more pillows and blankets, the marrier. Bay is absolutely right though, bedding can get very costly.

8900.00  :o

That is nuts.

This is how the other half lives.  :D

It's not nuts if you make millions on Wall Street (remember the $10,000 shower curtain?) or take home $20 million a picture.  This is probably what Oprah, Julia Roberts, or Will Smith sleep on.

It's very easy to piss away tons of money on stuff like this (non performing assets).  Remember all the millions Mike Tyson made from boxing?  The guy is now broke... where did all his money go?  Aides, bills, and frills (like expensive bedding) can easily drain millions...  :'(

Your absolutely right there, Bay. I googled some bedding up for shits and giggles and some of the price tags that I saw were completely out of this world. A bed with all the bedding, pillows, etc could cost anywhere in the neighbourhood of 30 grand when completed.

it all leads me to wonder if that expensive stuff actually "feels" like it's THAT much better or it's just for "prestige" or the flashing of da bling that gets people to spend that much  ???

There are somewhat frugal wealthy people that don't spend money on material goods like they could.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Oprah had a 30,000 bed ;D

my 1000tc sheets do feel really good!!  Not $8900 good though!!  But sheets can last, and they are imperative for a good night sleep, so they are a health benefit.

I bought them when they were on sale marked down from $240 to $140.00 (king set)

 I need another set.   :D

I think it is primarily the former.  As I said before, that $800 pillow felt unlike any pillow I have ever felt; if I had the money to piss away, I would certainly have bought 2 or 4 of them.  When you buy a Bently or a Benz everyone can see your car.  When you buy an expensive pillow, the only one who knows about it is you.

We all have things we indulge in: jewelry, cars, clothes, stereo equipment, vacations, etc.  There is nothing necessarily wrong with this.  Rich people are simply able to do it on a scale that most of us can only dream about.

Ah, to sleep on that pillow... Sigh.  :)

I have an older sister who loves embroidering pillow cases. She is very creative on her designs. As a matter of fact, she has 21 pillows on her room, without them she can't sleep well.

I have an older sister and she loves making pillow cases. I think she has 21 pillows in her room. For her, pillows make her safe while sleeping because they serve as the boundary of her bed.

I can see that.

No.  Why would you be evil?  If your friend can afford them w/no hardship, he should get them for you!  The making of those pillows create(d) jobs.  Tell him to send me one as well.  It's for the good of the country!

An $800 pillow seems like a silly indulgence, don't you think?  Never mind two.  Are down pillows animal friendly?  Would PETA approve?  Are down pillows made from dead birds/ducks or do they kill them specifically to grab the feathers?  Anyone know? ???

Down can be collected in a variety of ways. Birds which provide the feathers may be used for other purposes, for example to provide meat. Some birds are killed solely for their down, while some birds (particularly some geese) are periodically live-plucked of their breast feathers. Some birds, such as the eider duck, line their nests with down, and such down is harvested safely after the young leave the nest.

Oh and SCREW PETA

Hmm, most of that sounds like PR.  I bet most of them are killed specifically for their feathers.  Duck is not a popular meat compared to say, chicken, so it is not as if lots of them a killed and tons of feathers are left over which they might as well use for pillows and feather beds.  :(
