Any suggestions for a neighbor?
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:07:31 PM »
A neighbor lady has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  I guess they've removed the mass and now she's going to be going thru chemo or radiation or both - not sure.  Either way, I'd like to do something ~ nothing major ~ just something helpful.  She's 50something, husband, kids (boys) moved away.  Any ideas?  Bring a dish over, fresh picked fruit (strawberries are in season), bake something, flowers... ???

Although we've been neighbors for many years, we don't really "know" them.  Very little socializing over the years, just mostly a wave here and there, small chit chat, etc.

Sorry to hear about that Princess L.

I think those are all good ideas.  You may want to wash and trim the strawberries so she won't have to do anything but add sugar or honey if she wants.

We've got an aquaintance who is dying of cancer and she is staying away from fats and protein for some reason.  They are getting a lot of casseroles so it was suggested I make them a salad.  I chopped/made several ingredients for a Southwest Chicken Salad and put everything in separate ziplock baggies so she could choose what she wanted or not on her salad.  Her husband eats everything so he probably dumped some of every baggie in his.

i think what Stella did is a good idea.  Add a card and it is a nice gesture.  i wouldnt get flowers, flowers can die quickly and well you know.

Like Toxi said, your time will be the best present.

But I'd also bring a small "care basket" fully of goodies to cheer her up a little.  Maybe some magazines of different types to keep her busy during the day if no one is home with her.

Let her know you are right there if she needs anything and give her your number.

Awww, you're a sweetheart Toxi.  Actually at 15 I was a overweight, wore really stupid looking glasses, had brown hair and to be 100%...didn't have my first date until I was 17 (and unfortunately he was a cheater).

That's a good idea ~ along with the strawberries I'll be picking tomorrow  ;D
They're very private people (her & her husband), so I want to be careful not to intrude.

sweetie..intrusion is in the delivery...

you could talk to someone for a second and be intruding and spend a day with em and with the right language they'll love you..

call it fortunate or unfortunate..taching 8 to 12 hr classes i need my folks to be paying attention ...and i've kinda learned how to manipulate attention..i know i know..i dont consider that a good thing either..

Cancer huh...well when my grandfather got cancer, he went out and started buying what he called "Wacky Tobaccy"...you know...the "green" stuff...lol

In all honesty though, her energy level will suck so anything you can do to help would be appreciated I'm sure.
