No way.  A home base is essential.

I’d say no, but I do see the appeal.  Generally, the stuff you own ends up owning you.

I know this technically isn't what the OP was referring to, but we live on the outskirts of the City, so lots of parks, fields and forests - beautiful

But literally yesterday, we've had a horde of what we refer to in the UK as the 'Travelling Community' descend upon us, setting up camp in the nearby nature reserve.  There are already bags of human waste and Trailer Park Boys-style piss jugs dotted here and there...

What this guy fails to mention, is that he chooses to live that lifestyle. Most people living out of cars and trucks aren't as tranquil in doing so.

It also helps that he probably has the money to buy whatever supplies he needs.

Nobody cares about people with money, choosing to live that lifestyle.

Will always be a dream of mine. Even if I think it will be hard to apply and do it... waiting for the right time and I know it may never come. I can do it tomorrow but my way of life is just as shitty as 99%... just following the money like retards.

My great great grand fathers were nomads and had a hard time transitioning to this stable normal life. My father used to tell me stories how the governement offered them great deals to just settle down but they always refused. They even built homes for them ( for free ) and instead of living there, they put their sheeps and furnitures in there and  slept in tents.

They used to travel through 4 countries. Now in this damn time we have restrictions over traveling between cities...

They used to stay wherever they want... they were in the hundreds and were always armed to protect themselves and their freedom. It's a good life, nothing like this toxic lifestyle we live in. I hope I'll get to live as a nomad once I'm 60yo, at least do it for a couple years.

I get your point, but I wouldnt. Not because Bay is gay, but because he seems too bossy and full of himself.

This in a nutshell.  Lots of dudes used to live in their cars in the parking lot of Gold's Venice in the late 80s.  The problem was getting sick, hygiene, access to running water, even though they had access to the Gold's showers and restroom.

Travelling crime waves more like lol. They're worse for rural towns than county lines drug gangs setting up shop.

The no house lifestyle isn't really enticing. Even the rich gypos like Tyson Fury end up settling in homes when they get rich.

But some hipsters into the financial independence lifestyle are selling their houses and doing the nomad stuff. The main danger is if the markets tank or you get sick, a paid off house comes in handy.

Yeah, we've got one of those 'NextDoor' community apps - normally buzzing with low key racism and complaints about 'kids of today', but it's gone mad with the arrival of our new Romany neighbours ;D

And I could see travelling the world for months at a time in a real luxury motorhome, but all year round..? :P

Yes, I could do it.

My wife wouldn’t want to and it isn’t my first choice.

I am migratory (snowbird) right now and feel this is the optimal way of life.

this dudes laughs too much for me - either on antidepressants or something - but not the life for me - shitting in a box and not knowing where the next shower is going to be is enough for me to pass

When my granddaughter married she and her husband went on their honeymoon in the green and white VW bus 'mooneyes' at the front of the caravan. The caravan was made up of their VW Bus and RV club friends. The caravan got considerably longer by the time the wedding ceremony started.

A "traveller" came to my gym years back and just up and asked me if he could buy steroids. I told the owner, "this fella here wants to buy roids." "Get the fuck out!" the owner screamed.

The travellers come to Sweden to lay asphalt on peoples driveways. They come and start working on the driveway before any agreement has been reached. Then when the house owners ask what the hell is going on they become threatening. Apparently they do a shit job too.

I'm all for 'roughing it' for a weekend, but I quickly start missing the comforts of life. Staying at the Miramar in Montecito, CA  is more to my liking....but not my pocketbook, unfortuantely. Presently, a beach front room runs $5,600 per night not including taxes and fees. When I was a kid in the 1950's, my parents and I would stay at the old Santa Barbara Miramar in a two bedroom cabin. I bet they didn't pay more than $100 a night.

I want nothing to do with camping or rv life. Give me a nice hotel room or a rental luxury condo on the beach.  My brother talked me into a bike tour of around 100 miles a day from the west side of Iowa to the east. He told me it would be a slow pace and he lied. We hammered every day. We did 500 miles on the bike in five days. We slept in tents every night. It was around 90 every day and the tents were brutally hot. One thunder storm I slept in about 4" of water. Sold the Cannondale road bike soon after. Just booked a vacation. It will be a 2500 sq foot condo on the beach with three balconies. I don't rough it.

Pick your poison: 8 weeks of 2 grams of test a week or an 8 week tour of the USA in a camper van?

No.  I'd rather visit a park and go home afterwards.  A few hours of that and I've had my fill.  I don't want to spend days at a time in the forests.  I'd feel antsy missing gym time.  I'd be irritated at not being able to shower with good water pressure.  When I want to feel like I'm sleeping in the woods I set the nightly noisemaker to the storm setting.   ;D

I manage with one vehicle and no trailer. But then the nearest grocery store is less than a mile away.....and they have home delivery available.

I'd rather be owned by my house than be shitting in the woods.

A house isn’t really the same, I’m talking about material consumer goods … all the clothes, electronics, and other stuff that accumulates.  No room for that if you’re “nomadic”

Unless you’re constantly renovating your house to stay up w trends, in which case yes- it does own you

A house is a great investment. My present house doubled in price in 15 years.  My first house almost doubled in price in 14 years. House prices go up and down but in the long term go up. Now with inflation it's the best and safest investment you can have. Traditionally house prices rise with inflation.

Someone mentioned being a minimalist. I can see that. I have a really great home gym but truth be told I could get away with something like power blocks and a bench with a few attachments or a barbell with a squat rack. Right now I have three extra bedrooms with furniture that go unused. I go in one when my wife is having one of her moaning dreams keeping me awake. I wonder what she is dreaming about? Must be something scary.

Doubling in price in 14 years is 5% return.  And those are good years.

Now subtract all your upkeep and expenses, interest paid, value of your time spent mowing the lawn, etc.

Not so hot of an investment.  Just sayin'.

I'm in the same boat.

Owning a home is a bit of a luxury.  At least it doesn't depreciate...usually...a nd you have to live somewhere.

Houses are typically poor investments unless you are renting them out and having someone else pay for everything.

Factor in all the costs, taxes, repairs, etc.

Very few people actually make money on selling a house they lived in for years.

In Houston, just the property taxes alone made it impossible to make money on a house.

People forget that and just look at the cost of the house itself.

Living in northern New Mexico we have a lot of real nomads, it's a common lifestyle choice.

They come through my area all the time and camp out at the State Parks for days or weeks at a time.

Most of them are good people who just said fuck you to society.

Some are seedy bastards who steal shit and cause trouble.

One of my favorite hiking spots is filled with them this time of year, due to the amazing weather.

They bother the shit out of people, asking for money and supplies. Panhandling on the side of the road in groups.

I'm all for people living life on their terms, but a lot of them are not people you would typically associate with.

That said, i was at a gas station a good 100 miles east of my home, in the middle of nowhere. This grungy looking guy and his girlfriend approached me with a gas can and asked for gas. I asked him where they were from and he was from my hometown in Texas. Small world. I gave him 5 gallons and wished him luck.

You could tell they were living out of the truck bed with a camper. Wearing old clothes and had dreads. Probably hadn't showered in a while. But they seemed happy and weren't forceful, they asked nicely and kept their distance. They were probably early 20's.

You have to live somewhere, so it’s either buying or renting.  It’s not like you can live somewhere for free.  And If you rent, the costs of taxes & upkeep get passed on to you anyways.

It’s not a “get rich quick” investment but generally a reliable long term investment-one in which you have a larger degree of control then securities or commodities.  Your post is accurate but lacking context imo

The thing about rising house prices is that it doesn't translate to profits as long as you need another place to live when you sell it. Yes, you can sell it for twice what it was worth 15 years ago, but you will also have to pay twice as much for the new place. The main thing is with few exceptions, you don't lose value. It is not the best savings account because you pay interest on the mortgage rather then earn it on an investment.

Each time I sold one of my homes I made a good profit based on the equity, which I reinvested in the homes I purchased. Although I moved to better and better neighborhoods and bigger houses, my first and second home purchases are actually worth more than my current place because they are in the Portland and despite all the crap you read and see in the media about Portland, inner city properties are in high demand and way, way overpriced for what you get.

If you know what you’re doing (most don’t) it’s possible to buy a home that’s well maintained but with outdated finishes, perform some renovations and sell for profit.

The value added can be realized if you sell immediately or if you re-appraise and re-finance your mortgage or HELOC.

Real estate investments are unique in that it’s fair easier to leverage your money and the market itself is fairly inefficient.

It's not that you are going to get rich owning a home but you can go broke renting at least your mortgage payment stays the same while rent goes up every year. There are also a lot of additional non financial benefits and utility of owning a home.

Yes, but the down payment for a mortgage alone could be several years worth of rent.

Your real estate taxes and insurance go up every year though.

Then you have maintenance and upkeep.

My house has had wild swings in value.  Currently in this high market bubble it has gone up 225% over 23 years.

Owning your own home is a luxury.  Many intangible benefits.

Some things cannot be measured in dollars and cents.

In 4 years my house payment has went up $200 due to rising property taxes and will go up $30 more in 2022. That said my house now sells for 4 times what I paid for it. My neighbors with similar land/house sold theirs for 10k over asking in 5 days.

I guarantee if even one desperate hitchhiker was stupid enough to get into your raft of shit, she'd have jumped right back out the second she caught a glimpse of the maladroit little mutant sat in the back, wiping mango juice off his recessed chin and muttering in Pidgin English about Port Douglas beach shacks and the Soviet Union.

Jay Carsey lead an amazing life. He was very successful consultant and community college President in Maryland, then just disappeared, moved to another state with nothing, lived at a YMCA for a while then built a new life. Became a bartender in El Paso. Then disappeared again. He would build a life, become member of a community, then when established he would disappear again, to a different state with nothing and start all over building a new life. He built life after life, changing name, job and wife. So he lived several lives as different people. But he apparently didn't screw over past wives/girlfriends, as he would leave them the home, money, and once left a note, "I'm leaving you so you don't have to leave me". So he would leave when the relationship was pretty much dead and ready for divorce(which let's be honest happens in most marriages at some point).  His quote from the book was ""once you hit six good drives off the tee, do you really need to hit six dozen more?" He wanted to cram several lives into one. Book about him called Exit the Rainmaker.

Poor SKIRT scottie  , inform yourself about AU beaches & what local councils provides !. + learn geography !.

Thinking to buy a US build electric VW Kombi  ;) !. Why should someone who owns a few Queenslanders (beach shacks) work or get a JOB !.

OBW, poor old SKIRTY, in 2018 I was volunteering with the Royal Thai Tourist Police @ Phuket airport & Bangla Road !.

Jesus Christ, hahaha. Get a load of this guy. Homeless, jobless, illiterate, scrounging off of the council, sleeping in a van. But lookout! He was a VOLUNTEER support officer with the TOURIST POLICE!

I'm all for homeownership. I bought the first house when I was in my mid-twenties. Since then, I've owned three more. Each house, sold for a hefty profit. Like you, I could sell this current house for almost 4 times what I paid for it in 1998. Problem is that the next house would also probably cost 4 times what it would have been worth twenty some years ago. Unless you are flipping properties, you should have some reason to move other than to take your equity out.

Thanks for the nonsensical politics lesson, Savile! I'm also half Canadian; have you had any of those tied up in your rape van? :D

Tourist police are uniformed personnel who lack police powers and are largely responsible for writing out reports for insurance companies for victims of theft.
Foreign Volunteers are required to purchase their own clothing and equipment.

Hahahaha! You spent your own unemployment benefits on a security guard uniform in order to tell tourists how to find their way around an airport, you fucking LOSER. I imagine you were made to leave after they read your first 'report' and found an incomprehensible mess of emojis, misspelled gibberish, and ' 8)' about countries you've never been to.

That's not Scotish , proud Scottie would never use colonial English lingo & latino alfabet !.

Gee U know about my travels too  ::) !.

Hey, tell me how can I get mentioned 'unemployment benefits' in the Kingdom of Siam !.

I'll be in Singapore on the 4th November '21  8) , (I'll PM U my flight #.) , just look for a SILVER SURFBORD BAG  ;D.

Don't forget to bring a Scotish dancers dagger  :D !. What colours is yours kilt-SKIRT !.

Yeah like most things i post, it's a generalization based on my experience.

In some areas it is very different. Just look at property taxes between Houston, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico. I own rental houses in both places. A little easier to make money in NM because property taxes are non existent, but you can't charge as much due to local economics.

You do have to live somewhere, many people will pay more due to better schools or access to jobs, etc.

In NM it's very easy to afford a home and your property taxes go up maybe $100 per year. In Houston on a house of similar value my property taxes went up by $2000-2500 per year. That's a critical factor.

I have a house that is paid for in College Station, Texas. It paid for itself in 10 years because it's close to the college campus of Texas A&M. I can charge $2800 a month easily because rich parents. The same size house of the same value in Las Cruces, NM, near NMSU is rented out at $1750. So it's all relative due to the market. Plus there is far less money in NM versus Texas as a whole. I've focused on college towns because if you are close to campus you can mark up the rent 50% or more.

I owned a house in Houston for 7 years. Bought it for $290 and sold it for $370. When i calculated the taxes, maintenance, upgrades, etc. I only made 20k profit on that exchange.

The most money i've made was actually flipping houses, but it takes way too much time and coordination. I was doing it 15-20 years ago. You can't make the same margins today.

I'd rather buy raw undeveloped land and sit on it for 20 years. That's what i've been doing the last 5 years. Learn the development plan for certain cities and make strategic land purchases. Find areas that will be highly developed in 20-30 years and buy land there. It's simple.
