If you're talking about bodybuilders with great back development, here's one name that isn't mentioned all that much anymore.....Tony "The Jetman" Pearson.

Getting that nickname from his days with the World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF), Pearson had one of the best back in the business. I have footage of his posing routines from both the 1991 and 1992 WBF Championships.

To me, what makes Pearson's lats stand out is that the Jetman was considerably lighter than many of the men mentioned earlier. Pearson competed between 205 and 220 lbs. But his back looked like that of a much larger man.

if tony's lats were not so high, he would have smoked both Ronnie and dorian in the rear lat spread. Although, of course, he would not have been as thick.

You know whats ironic is Hulkster says no one ever suffered for having weak calves and Tony is a perfect example , his high/small calves cost him contests no doubt .

Pearson's calves are in a whole new realm of skinny . . . i've seen female sprinters w bigger calves.

coleman's calves are poorly shaped, but they're big enough to where they're not an immediately obvious weakness.

Coleman's calves when he was light were just as bad as Tony's !!

you guys have all been duped.

high lats!! this was especially obvious in the rear lat spread.

If you look closely, you will notice that in the pic that ND posted, tony's wrists are way up high on his waist, thus minimizing the look of his high lats in the lat spread.

you have to have a fine eye for these things! ;)

I dont think it's far fetched at all that Coleman was still natural here. Check out those biceps :o A lot of current pros would kill for those arms ;)

its a simple case of evolution. Dorian RETIRED nearly 9 years ago, Ronnie has since taken over and gone onto develop a back which is atleast as good as Dorians. Had Dorian continued to compete who knows how good he would have become?

Its like comparing Linford Christie to Asafa Powell. Linford was number 1 with a PB of 9.87 for the 100m sprint. 10 years later, Asafa is now number 1 with a PB of 9.78 (?) but would he have been able to compete against Linfords mystique? who knows..........

9.77 is Asafa's world record. The guy is a freak show. He won the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in the 100m sprint literally jogging from the 60metre mark in 10.03

Since the debate has moved on to Person's back/lats some BACK shots might actually help.  ::)

Good pic. High lats? Nope. Actually his back structure looks like Ronnie's but not as detailed.

Perhaps!! However, Pearson has several IFBB pro wins under his belts. Most, however, are courtesy of the long-lost arena of mixed-pairs competitions, where he's won with the like of Tina Plakinger and Ms. Olympia, Carla Dunlap.

The last time I saw him competed was in the 1992 WBF Championship, where he was one of the few guys who came in good shape. Some of the fans and the WBF staff, including Vince McMahon, felt he should have cracked the top 5. Personally, I had him, instead of "Rock-n-Roll-Wild-Child" David Dearth in that group. I even would have placed him ahead of Berry DeMey, who ended up 4th.
