Granted, not all Scotch scotch is of the smokey, flavorsome Islay style I seem to prefer so maybe I'm being too hard on the Yamazaki. It was a straightforward, minimalist drink, uncrowded by a whole bunch of over-, under-, and sliding in sideways flavors, if that's your kind of thing.
Then I had a Macallan 12yo after that. Big contrast. For me, it had everything the Japanese one lacked - body, depth, lasting warmth and peatyness - and it was $40 cheaper.
I'll check out a bottle of Dewars 12 as well but will leave the bourbons for another time. The few I've tried- Jacks, Jims- are too sugary for my taste. I could see exploring them later on tho so will keep the Dickel in mind.
