Japanese Whisky
« on: December 05, 2020, 09:37:22 AM »
My first. Suntory Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve. Vicious stuff straight out of the bottle but mellowed in the glass to a drinkable and boring vanillaned concoction with a Mickey Mouse nose and an ok cinnamon tail. Nothing objectionable but WNHI for the $.

I liked Lagavulin 16 a lot so will explore heavily peated Islay styles before handing over anymore hardearned to our inscrutable Pacific allies.

Scotch whisky dudes, post your poisons.

Dewars - The Ancestor 12 year old blended is a good value for sipping.

Grants Family Reserve for mixed drinks.

Idiots.

So you are an alcoholic and can't handle it. I get it. But a lot pf people can handle it and savor the taste of certain whiskeys. The most intolerant people are the ones with the least self control.

Not a big whisky drinker, but Hibiki Harmony and Okayama single malt is ok.   If I have it here (and rarely) it is Chivas and water.

Had a flight of Japanese Whiskeys recently.  They are mores scotch-y and I prefer bourbon.

After looking everywhere, four bottles of George Dickel Bottled in Bond appeard last week locally, so I bought two.  It was the Whiskey of the year for 2019.

Thought it was good, but not the be all end all.

Also, ignore shitzo, looks like he's back to just ruining threads.

My two choices are not expensive.

Dewars 12 Year Ancestor is $25 for 750ml

Grants is $25 for 1.5L.

Where I live the taxes on spirits are high.

You’re really not even a decent troll these days. The cheap rubbing alcohol vodka has melted your already underperforming brain.

Granted, not all Scotch scotch is of the smokey, flavorsome Islay style I seem to prefer so maybe I'm being too hard on the Yamazaki. It was a straightforward, minimalist drink, uncrowded by a whole bunch of over-, under-, and sliding in sideways flavors, if that's your kind of thing.

Then I had a Macallan 12yo after that. Big contrast. For me, it had everything the Japanese one lacked - body, depth, lasting warmth and peatyness - and it was $40 cheaper.

I'll check out a bottle of Dewars 12 as well but will leave the bourbons for another time. The few I've tried- Jacks, Jims- are too sugary for my taste. I could see exploring them later on tho so will keep the Dickel in mind.

Macallan is my favorite, but there are many distillers i like, and i’m not necessarily region biased.  A few years ago when Macallan were moving toward the blends, i picked up 3 bottles of 18yr.  Nicest whisky i’ve ever tasted.

I've tried the Suntoy before, it was OK from what I remember, not really a standout. I have a bottle of Auchentoshen that I haven't opened yet. Never tried it, should be interesting.

Give Laproiagh 10 to your enemies, haha.

I would say Ardbeg might be worth a try for that Islay flavor.

Macallan 12 and Glenlivet 18 are solid and I usually have them around.

Redbreast is my go to Irish Whiskey - the single pot Irish stuff is quality.

I'll never get it. Alcohol is alcohol. Beer tastes like shit. Most hard liquor tastes like shit. I'm not talking about mixed drinks, people.

Let's just say it for what it is....It doesn't taste nearly as good as it feels.

I prefer my whiskys with a bouquet of kerosene, a delicate hint of acetone, and an explosive finish.

Growing up, I never understood the appeal of whisky - but that was all blended.  And my preferred poison would be Jamaican White Rum.

But the first time someone offered me a single malt, I suddenly got it - it had a depth that those blends lost

Me and my old man never got on (massive understatement).  But one year, for some reason I'll never understand (he's long dead) he bought me a bottle of Glenlivet

I think it's the only bottle of booze I ever really took time to savour - genuinely enjoyable
