THE GOLDEN CALF STATUETTE FROM "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS"
Paramount, 1956
The magnificent golden calf statuette seen in the last sequence of Cecil B. de Mille's Biblical epic right before Moses, as portrayed by Charlton Heston, comes down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments. Constructed of wood and other composite materials, this stylistically-designed calf is in a sitting position as a large disk flanked by two serpents rests atop its head. Its main body portion is a decoratively carved wood while the head, chest and hoof areas are painted in goldleaf. The original base used to carry the calf in the film is included; it is an enormous wooden tabletop with carved 'zig-zag' designs around the surface interspersed with six gold-painted serpents and two inserted metal poles. Poles are heavily rusted and semi-deteriorated, but base is in excellent condition as is the calf.
Calf: 70 inches x 71 inches x 15 inches Base: 99 inches x 49 inches x 21 inches

This golden calf was part of an exhibition organized by The Smithsonian called 'Hollywood: Legend and Reality' which traveled around the United States in 1985.
