Title: Upper Body Only
Post by: 1970WILDCAT on October 21, 2006, 07:20:42 PM
I joined a nearby gym over the summer and have become addicted to the weights. I love training my whole body with different exercises. Every week brings new rewards and new challenges. Lately though, I have noticed a lot of people who only train their upper bodies. I know for some people with injuries or such, this is their only option.  But most of them are healthy and just do not train their lower body.  To me, this is definitely not the way to go.  Who cares if you have a huge chest and massive arms, when you walk around on toothpick legs. What's everyones opinion on this? Just wondering.

Better to have a big upper body and a small lower body than having a whole small body.

I hear ya man.

It takes guts to go balls out on leg day. The puking, the pain, the falling over. That's why most pussies won't do them. And the ones who pretend, only hit the extensions.  ::)

A lot of guys just want the bar body...look good in a polo and jeans.  I see plenty of guys like that at my gym; the only thing is when it gets ridiculous.  There are a few guys w/ pretty good upper bodies and next to no leg development. :(

Personally, I used to hit legs really hard, but I've blown out 1 ACL and both MCL's and meniscus.  My leg workouts now are very light maintainance just to keep some of my original size.  Once you get it, it's not too hard to keep, but I always feel self-conscious when I do these light ass workouts.  I want to turn around and tell people "I used to squat 500 lbs.  No,seriously..." ;D

If you wanna be a half ass trainer then just train upper body.  I see tons of em at my gym.  Legs take hard work and way too many people don't know what that means.

I concur. Luv2hurt trains at one of the biggest corporate chain 'fitness spas' in the Chicagoland area. It sux! I walked in one of them once and saw a child care room, hair/nails salon, massage therepy room, rock climbing and adult contemporary music playing very softly.

I turned around and walked right the fawk out...my nipples felt very sore and swollen for two days afterwards...I think just the sight of that place made my estrogen levels skyrocket.

Leg training is sometimes more psychologically demanding than physical - if you can get your head round just getting to the gym and getting through the warm-up then that's half the battle won.

You can see who the hardest workers in the gym are just from their legs.

What I find amazing is the guys with actual leg development tend to not use insane amounts of weight but rather focus on proper form, there are probably 2 dozen or more guys that use more weight then I do at my gym but lack any kind leg development.

That's probably true - I've used as much as 15 plates a side on the leg press and got nowhere with it - doing slightly higher reps in the 12-15 range and concentrating on form has produced wonders for my leg development.

Yep very true I see it all the time.  They pile on tons of weight and do partial reps, which equals no muscle or strength gain.  You would think they would catch on and get a clue.  These same guys look the same year after year, they also apply the same methods for all their body parts.  If you saw most of them outside the gym you would not even know they worked out.

Funny you say that, Sometimes I look up members on the computer to see how long they have been coming and how often. I see some have been coming a few days a week for years (5+) and here I am thinking they are new to training or just joined the gym recently, how can these retards not realize that they are getting almost no gains after years of training. ;D

ever since i saw on youtube that old fucker with the reporter doing 1000lbs for reps with the piss ant legs doing quarter reps i just laugh when i hear anyone mention the leg press. honestly, after seeing that i don't care if you use 5000lbs on the leg press. i'm sure whoever you are, you've found a way to make the movement as easy as possible. leg press is just a show pony exercise to me.

leg training for me is squats. there's never been a choice really. i have to have functional strength and power and legs, hips and trunk are the priority. upper body with no legs would be like strong branches with a week trunk, ready to collapse from the first decent hit.

If they're not injured, they're gutless.  The reason.......It's hard.

When you train the body you have to train the whole body. You will look ridiculous otherwise. Guys with no legs and a big upper body look ridiculous and guys with no upper body and big legs look ridiculous.

I think most gym rats who neglect legs just don't bother because they make training too damn long and tedious to begin with.  I can only imagine the leg workouts some of these guys would come up with. You know the guys who do 5 exercises for every muscle group for 25 sets day in and day out,  They just don't get it to begin with.

I have and will never admit the guy without big wheels as a bber.
I respect big wheels with 16 inchs arms guys more than tooth pic legs with 20 inchs arms guys.
Having big wheels need 10000000000 times more mental power than having big another bodyparts.
Big wheels=Respect.
