Man up, you weak SOB!

http://www.lift-run-bang.com/2017/05/please-stop-loving-yourself-just-as-you.html?m=1

Excerpt:

'After a few of my less than stellar collisions, I felt something pulling on my jersey.  It was a non-mustachioed man, who was not wearing daisy duke jogger shorts.  He didn't have a whistle to confuse me with, either.

Oh, it was dad.

He pulled me off to the side and said to me "if you don't start hitting harder I'm going to take you off this field, put your ass in the car, and drive you home."'

In modern day speak, this is what dad said.....

"Son, you suck.  You play like a little bitch.  Man up."

Are you triggered?  I read a couple of years ago that telling young dudes to "man up" was bad in some way.  I got triggered that day.  For sure, that happened.

"Take me back to the field."

Also in modern day speech..."release the Kraken."

Dad smiled that crappy overacted Bill Paxton style smile and drove me back.  I got back in the line up, and I remember seeing red.  Ok no I'm not exaggerating this time.  I was mad as hell.  When my number got called, I decided it was indeed time to ring the bell.  Namely, my own.  As I actually did run as fast as I could, and did slam into the other plastic plated toddler really, really, hard.  Well, as hard as a ten year old can.

;D I legitimately had friends who's dad's did this to them when i was in junior high and high school. Some went on to be amazing football players.

I did it to my son when he wrestled and played football.

Eat or be eaten in combat sports.

Just about all coaches in the old days did not coddle weakness.  Same with the elite military forces.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

He mentions the "black lightning".  I've experienced that quite a few times.

Our coaches in High School were very aggressive and abusive. We had a 350 pound Def Line coach who used to throw kids around on the field. It was like military training, screaming, cussing, physical abuse, mental abuse, etc.

They would refuse to let us drink water until we reached a certain point in practice. Coaches would slap kids around, it was nuts.

A bunch of them ended up getting fired in the late 90's. But we did win State like 7 times in 10 years. ;D

My dad never did anything like that, he was a calm guy. But most of the coaches were like that and a lot of other dads were too.

I remember doing line drills and we had to line up against a random person, then run full speed and try to tackle each other head on. Our RB was a stud and used to knock people senseless all the time. I do remember that feeling a little too well. ;D

At the end of my sophomore year i quit football and played baseball. It was a much better experience.

There's a middle ground.  A coach can be firm and challenging without being psychopathic abusive.
