You train hard and run hard so it's no surprise you are not recovering.

You enjoy running so cutting back on the lifting makes sense for you.

There are lots of ways to structure it and I'm sure you will figure it out.

You've heard the saying:

For you it is:

"You can run hard or train hard but not run hard and train hard."

Yes, it's priorities. I was reading a good piece about the 1962 AAU Mr. America.  They did a little bio on all the contestants. They all trained and competed in Olympic lifting and they posted their totals. I believe at that time the AAU Mr. America was held with an Olympic weight lifting comp on the same day. The bodybuilders all competed while depleted from dieting for the needed athletic points. One guy in that competed in 1962 actually was in the same Outfit I was in.

The way I heard it said many bodybuilders back in the day devoted months to Olympic lifting then switched to bodybuilding when the contests were approaching.

 A couple of hybrid athletes I know prioritize according to races and what they want to accomplish. For months running was the priority then after the big race cut the mileage and spent a lot more time in the weight room.

I boxed for awhile. I was 4-1.  Nope, getting punched in the face isn't for me, lol. I  That's why I'm still pretty. I also did BJJ when there was only three dojos in the US. One in California, NJ and NYC.  I did this around the time of UFC 2. I will admit I was  weak picking it up.  I greatly admire grapplers and their skills but I'm more of a striker.  I still do boxing drills like hitting the heavy bag like I did today after a 5 mile run in the 90 degree brutal sun. If I need to defend myself I have been carrying for around 40 years. One of the greatest attributes of true martial artist is being able to walk away with it hurting your ego.  Of course sometimes that choice isn't available but in so many circumstances it's the best choice. I know a guy that killed two people in two different time periods. The first he had a very drawn out trial and was found not guilty.  The second one he fractured a man's skull in a fight killing him and this one he was found guilty of manslaughter. He did around 5 years in prison and it wrecked his life. Lost a great job, his marriage and two houses that he owned. If had to do it again he said he would have walked away.

yes this is true but the decision is sometimes very quick.

Heard UFC legend and street fighter Jorge Masvidal say this after being asked about what's his best technique for the street? He said in effect it was a sucker punch and a 50 yard dash.  Knowing how hard he could punch in his prime by the time his opponent got himself off the floor Jorge was very far out of sight.

Most of the severe head injuries seem to be from the head hitting the ground or a hard object while falling.

I would say that most deaths occur from kicks to the head when on the floor.
If attacked by a group of guys BJJ is of no use what so ever.

i remember seeing a fight & one guy kicked a guy who was on his knees & he lifted him off the floor with the kick.
i honestly thought the guy was done but a few days later i saw him with two black eyes.

Just went to the cardiologist. They took blood, urine, oxygen reading, EKG, scan of the heart, x-ray, blood pressure in all extremities, pulmonary test and a treadmill EKG. Took five hours.  I asked each tech if they found anything bad. The standard answer was the physician has to review the results then they say everything looks good. If nothing else my heart is good shape. I get the official word from the cardiologist after all the results are posted for her in a few weeks.

They also did something I never had done. They put goggles on me and said look at the green circle. Then a burst of bright light came blinding me.  They said this gives them a view of the arteries in my eyes that is a predictor of how other arteries in my body are doing.

Heart disease doesn't run in my family.

If all those tests help you sleep at night go for it.

Since you brought this up by posting your testing I have a few questions:

What would you do if they find you have a heart issue?

Change your diet? 

Why not change it now?

Are you on statins?

Do you have all these tests because of family history of heart disease?

How often do you have all these tests?

If they found a clog I would get a stent to save my life, worst case scenario a by pass.  If the scan revealed a leaking heart valve I would get it replaced or medication to regulate the heart. If they found I had an electrical abnormality I would get that corrected through medication or operation. If I had high blood pressure I would take drugs. Two types of heart attack and to put it simplistically it's a clog or an electrical problem.

No one dies from a heart attack in your family? You have great genes. My mother and father both died from a heart attack as they neared 80 years of age. My sister had by pass at 75.  My brother who is 78 runs 5K's.

Last time I went through the program was two years ago.

My father was dying from cancer when he had a heart attack. Official cause of death was a heart attack but the cancer would have gotten him if it had more time.

saved my Bacon, i still canīt thank the Doctorīs enough. A Female Cardiologist & luckily for me a very good one ( i was told this later).

I got 2 stents that over a period of time slowly released medicine to help healing & prevent any clogging.
I was very lucky as it was a main Artery which some donīt survive.
As soon as the stents were in i felt better & when in the Intensive care unit i asked for something to eat  ;D
I got some kind of meat burger & rice.

FFS..i couldnīt eat the rice as i had to lie flat so i grabbed the burger & just ate it  :D

Running a 5K charity type road race tomorrow with my oldest son. He hasn't been training and said he is doing it for fun. I've been training for it a lot but at my age, progress is slow. I remember in my youth being able to get into top shape in under three weeks. Now it's very slow going improving.

 Trying to win my age bracket. Some races divide it from 60-64 then 65 to 70.  This one dumps everyone from 60 to 69.  Those 60 year old kids are fast, lol. Truth is I'm not in good running shape yet but I hope to be for my next race in September the Semper five Marine Corp race in September. Tomorrow's race I'm treating as a training run.  (good excuse to run slow, lol)

Yesterday I ran 5.22 miles not including a quarter mile warm up. Then I ran 5x110 sprints. The heat was getting to me. Came home to clean the pool and felt like crap. Way too much heat and time in the sun.

Today I ran a little tune up. I wanted to get use to what speed I think I will be running in the race. I did 5 x quarter miles on a treadmill. Fastest was 6:59 Pace. After I did one set of step ups of 1 x 10 per leg. I used a 20" platform. I really need to work on steps ups. I have some form problems. I think I'm slightly pushing off with the non working leg and the negative is way too fast.

Tomorrow is race day. If you ever want to see some beautiful in shape women go to a 5 K. Monday it's back to the weight room.  I'm 167 and three pounds away from goal of 164. Ideally I would like to be 155lbs for the September race but I have to be realistic with my age. Who knows? Might happen if I apply myself enough.

Glad you're still here. Thirty years ago the new tech wasn't wide spread and you would have died. I heard stents were first done in Italy.  You must feel better with the better flow to the heart.

I got this stent as itīs very flexible. They told me my OP was very difficult as there was "bends" i was high on Morphine so not sure.

Itīs an amazing what they can do nowadays.

They didnīt fuck around ..i was wheeled in & they were there & quickly did it.

Ran the charity 5K this morning. Haven't run these type events in years. I'm a sprinter and not a distance runner.  This was a small race by the bay. Maybe 300 people ran. A nice surprise was that my old Outfit buzzed the crowd maybe 200 yards up in a helicopter. Wasn't expecting them to do that.

It was hot and very humid with an unrelenting sun.  Felt a little sick when I finished. Ran slow 8 minute something miles. I didn't realize I ran past my granddaughter holding a sign until I heard from the back, "Pop!".  I turned to wave at her.

The running community is for the most part a friendly crowd. Plenty of really beautiful in shape young women. Keeping it bodybuilding related a few guys who looked like they were in great lifting shape ran too.

Monday I will pick up lifting again and my next goal is to get faster in distance running. Progress is coming slow at this age and health. I feel good but that could change.   

Jumping in the pool and having a beer soon.
