Vince, thank you for doing so much on this board to honor Keith's memory. I didn't know you were so close and talked on the phone. I remember Keith from his bouncing days at Tequila Willie's in Manhattan Beach. He was very impressive in person. This was back in the 1980s. Those were good times for us as we were in our twenties and living the life that spirited twenty-somethings do.

We communicated a lot via PM over the years. I looked forward to him coming back to Hawaii. He truly had a big heart. He had his faults and was the kind of guy that could be your best friend or his worse enemy. Once you got on his list he never let up. He was a genuine person and the real deal and despised phonies, liars and poseurs.

His passing really got me in the gut. I wish people here knew him better and underneath all that bravado he really was a good man with a good heart. He will truly be missed by me.

May his words and memories here last forever.

I really have nothing good to say about Keith.  After all, the guy did wish death upon me and my family numerous times and basically was obsessed with me saying some of the most vile and horrible things to me.   Having said that, I still expressed my concerns to him to get in shape or he was going to die and he simply didn't do it.  He keep eating junk food and spent every dollar he got playing craps at the casino.

Ironically, he last post up here was making fun of Ben Weider being dead but the fact remains that he didn't take care of himself and he ran out of time.  But I'm not going to piss on his grave as there is no honor in doing

Keith Jones is dead and so are any issues or beef I had with him.

You F..ing Cumbucket !, you have been pissing on him since the news broke on here. Since you obviously have no respect for yourself, try to have some for him and his family and stay out of his thread.

I know that Nasser thought very highly of Keith and I can't think of many better judges of character; particularly of people connected to this industry.

RIP Keith D Jones.

I am genuinely sad about this.  Man, can't believe I'm just finding out today!  I liked Keith and he really did do a lot for the sport back in the early days!  Seemed like a good guy and very real!

You'll be missed Onlyme!  And my condolences to his family!

This wouldn't be Getbig if even tribute threads didn't end up in flame wars. It appears that some people are magnets for people and are popular while others are magnets for shit. Nuff said.

If I made some people laugh with this thread then Keith is still with us.

When I talked to Keith on Jan 4th he sounded positive and things were getting better. His leg hadn't given him any trouble for some time and he was looking forward to getting back in shape. I have been telling people for years on forums that it is not at all easy to reverse morbid obesity. Fat people get teased like Keith did. He hated being fat more than anything. When you self-hate like that it can lead to depression. Imagine a popular guy like Keith having to hide at home because he didn't want people to stare at him in public. Goodness me, I don't know what to say. Unless you are supersize you have no clue about what it feels like to be trapped in a body like that. He had plenty of motivation to regain his former self. He wanted more than anything to be around for his daughter Jaime and her children. Then he wanted to be a guy hot chicks fancied. He knew they sure didn't dig a big, fat guy no matter how great his personality was.  Well, there are some women who do fancy big handsome men but there is no way Keith wanted to accept being big and fat. He had plenty of motivation. Look at the taunts here on Getbig. Epic teasing. So he was going to show everyone here that he could do it. He even planned on being so successful he would appear on Oprah to tell the world his story. That never happened. People really shouldn't make fun of fat people because it isn't as if they lacked will power and behaved like pigs. That is what everyone thinks but Keith had an acute medical condition that persisted and that caused all manner of side effects requiring more treatment and even hospitalization. Last year he had pneumonia. I suppose after all these years of taking pills and antibiotics his immune system would be not the best. That sore leg developed a form of cellulitis and it caused swelling, soreness and redness. He said it swelled to 32 inches at times. So imagine trying to cope with that disability and then the obesity? A guy who was Mr Popular ended up being a recluse who got his kicks from the internet and doing business. Oh, yeah, he liked to gamble in the casinos.

I hope that people didn't send him various home remedies to help him lose weight. Sometimes people in desperate circumstances resort to unusual treatments. If he fooled around with any weight loss drugs that could have taken a huge toll on his body. It doesn't matter now because he is gone. Damn, I still can't believe my mate Keith won't be posting anymore.

Keith used Goodrum as a whipping boy, fall guy, target, and all-round moron. That was how onlyme let off steam. Goodrum always came up with new shit to stir Keith. After a while Keith bagged Goodrum left and right and center! Funny stuff, but not to Melvin. That feud is over but Melvin isn't pleased that I featured him in my tribute thread here. I did a search of the forums for 'onlyme' and found 200 pages of threads! A search of 'noworries' found 64 pages of threads. Keith posted almost 20,000 posts here not counting his gimmick accounts! I couldn't believe how many times Goodrum got bagged. Someone would ask some obscure question and Keith would bag Goodrum in his reply! His ability to bag Goodrum was brutal. Those putdowns swelled to epic proportions! :) Goodrum got what he deserved and he certainly deserved what he got.

Alex, I'd like to make an attempt at answering that question on behalf of OnlyMe.

I don't think he ever trained with Arnold or Sergio or Haney because he is a bit younger than those guys, but I can attest to the fact that he is one strong lifter especially in the bench press and I'll have to let him give you the poundages because I never did watch him max out.

I was most impressed by OnlyMe one night at one of the military BB contests when he invited everyone to come on stage and beat him at arm wrestling and win $1,000 cash right there on the spot.

About 24 huge guys immediately jumped up and formed a line and actually looked big enough to give him a run for his money. Each stepped up to the official "arm bending" table and did their best to psych him out while Only kept on talking to the audiance with his hand held mic.

He would encourage all the guys to do their best and win that money and everyone made a worthwhile attempt but Only just kept on encourageing his "opponents" and talking to the crowd until he politely and easily pinned the the guy.

He took them all on and no one came even close to moving his arm. He just kept on talking as though nothing was even happening and all those guys were nursing sore arms during that  20 minute intermission.

Good thing too, cause he didn't have more than a hundred bucks in his pocket that nite.

Keith talks about anabolic drugs. Doesn't appear they did much from his limited use of some. He was big and strong before taking anything.

I never trained with Arnold but I did train at the same time in the same gym and in fact took showers with him and Zane and Franco and many others numerous times.  We had a coed gang shower at the Original Worlds.  I did train with Roy Callendar, Louie, Franco Columbo, Tony Pearson, Ken Waller, Dennis Tinnerino, Ray Mentzer, Hulk Hogan, Bill Kazmaier,  Kal Sklzak(?), Bill Pettis (who wasn't pro butwas bigger than most), I did bench after Bertil Fox but not with him, and I am sure others I just can't remember or think of.

I didn nothing but Test Cypionate 200mg for about 6 months and that is it.  Nothing ever again.  That was in 1986.  In 1979 or 80 I did buy a bottle of Dianabol from our resident pharmacist TN at World Gym.  I tookand felt nothing so didn't want to waster anymore money.  It was actually Ric Zumwalt who suggested I take steroids (the test at least) if I was to beat everyone.

I did tour around Hawaii with the No Hope in Dope organization.  I was the spokeperson for the MDA, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, and SPecial Olympics which I traveled around the US as a celebrity volunteer.  It was actually the Special Olympics that broughtme Hawaii the first time in 1989 after seeing me at the International Games in Reno, NV.  I always no matter where I appeared for the Special Olympics had the most popular and fun clinic for the kids.  I armwrestled every single kid and let them beat me. They would go ballastic.

One of the most memorable times I ever had was when a parent came up t me in Reno and started crying and hugged me and said she loved me.  The day before in my clinic I armwrestled her son.  I always made it look like I was big and bad and I would sometimes yell at the kids and grab their hand.  Well I guess this kid didn't want to because he was scared so finally he got up there.  I make it look like I am struglling but then let him beat.  He went crazy yelling and screaming he beat the World Champion.  That night he made his mom call everyone of his friends so he could tell them he beat me.  She said it was absolutely the most fun most excited he had been in years.  That actually made my tear up when she said all that.  But that happened all the time.  I loved being with those kids.  I have a million Special Olympic stories.

More about training.

Even when I first started I always lifted heavy.  It was me wanting to show-off more than anything.  After all these years I have had no serious problems from lifting except doing the sqauts where I blew out my L4 & L5.  And that was with fairly light weight.  I just thnk my joints have grawon accustomed to the haevy weight.

When I was training for the Olympics in 98' I was training twice a day but different.  My days were pretty set.  At 8am I would ride my bike to the gym.  It was 7 miles.  I lived on a side of a small mountain.  The hill was steep enough where little kids and others would have to push their bike up the hill.  It was exactly .8 miles from the bottom to my house.  Ihad to go over Diamond Head Crater also.  So I had hills and everything on this bike ride.  The morning workout was strictly cardio.  20 minutes on tread, 20 minutes on elliptical, and 20 minutes on stepper.  DO some situps.  On the way home I would stop off at Kahala Mall and have a protein shake and then go to the school and practice then continue home.  Get home around 1pm. go to my room get my laptop, get some food and go stand in the pool and work.  I woudl layout get nice and dark.  Rest then at 4pm get back on bike and go to the gym and workout.  Then head home have dinner.  DId this M,T, Th, and F.  On weekends I would pull a truck tire filled with cement and rocks around Diamond Head and through the streets.  Usually a 3 to 4 hour session.  I did this reliously for about 4 months till I moved back to LA to train.

Not sure if you have seen this pic.  This going around Diamond Head

Thanks Keith

I've always wondered about this because I guess that I watch too many movies.  It's so hard to tell on the big screen but I used these two actors because IMO they would seem about the same height.  Knowing that Jean Claude is @ 5'10" & Sly @ 5'7"...I would have never guessed.  I would put them at exactly the same height,

Now you picked Jean Claude as being bigger than the two (musculature) ALSO shocks me.  I guess the movie companies can really make someone look bigger in the picture.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with your opinion....actually It's very interesting

Keith: Actually when I say Jean Claude is more musclular I meant size wise.  He was fuller and near as lean as Sly was.  I remember during Over The Top I was sitting with some girls,.  They asked me where Sly was I said I didn't know, it wasn't my turn to babysit him.  Then all of a sudden here he comes with about 6 or bodyguards.  When you could finally see him the girls all at the same time said "Oh my god he is so skinny".  He is very skinny in person or at leasdt for that movie.  You got to remember that was really the only time I saw him except once for the boxing we went too.  I have never seen him out and about or after that.  All Iknow is during that movie he was skinny.  Jean Claude too.  We were friends before anyone knew him.  EVen the secretaries at Cannon wanted to know who he was.  Once ofthe bartender girls at the 3rd street Cafe where we had a few times always asked me who he was.  SHe loved him.  The neat thing is we ended up together.  Jean Claude back then was ripped and looked really good.  His wife Glady was a very popular BB girl back then too.  Sly I think in some of the ROcky movies was jut ripped to shreads.  Buthe also weighed at the most probably was 175 to 180.

Keith on training:

As a teenage I used to love doing push-ups. I did them all the time set after set. As for weight training this is how I trained with Ray Mentzer. Ray got me strong.

I did chest as many as 3 times per week.  Mondays were a heavy day, Wednesdays were a semi-heavy day with Friday being a rep and light day. I trained heavy on Mondays because I had a two day rest over the weekend.

Chest (heavy)

Warm-up set (doesn't count) 315 for 8 to 10
2nd set 405 for 6 to 8
3rd set 405 for 6
4th set 455 for 6
5th set 495 for 4 to 6
6th set 520 for 4

Flyes with 50's or 60's
Pec Dec (bottom weight)
Cable flyes
Dips

The above is pretty close to what I used to do.  It changed sometimes. I liked changing because it made it less boring doing the same thing all the time. The weight changed depending on what I was doing but the above weights are what I would do usually on Mondays.  There were some days where Ray (Mentzer) had me doing a version of the Russian Strength workout.  We only did this a couple times a month.

I did incline as a warm-up for Shoulders on Thursdays.  I still do that. I don't like to work incline on same day as flats. I do sometimes but I don't like it. I am generally worn out after my chest so the weight I use on the incline is less.

I trained Chest and Triceps usually on Mondays.  Then Back and Bi's on Tuesdays.  Chest and Triceps again on Wednesday's. Shoulders,  lower Back and very little legs on Thursday.  I trained Chest and Triceps on Fridays. I always worked heavy triceps. I like working the triceps with heavy weight.  I only worked biceps once maybe sometimes twice a week.  I did calves and forearms almost everyday.

I think that is about it.  It has been a long time since I was able to train like this. And back then I didn't rest allot between sets.  Some things changed just because sometimes I didn't feel like doing something. I just made sure I rested at least 48 hours between body parts.

I really didn't diet much.  I was younger so I could eat anything and stay pretty lean. I didn't even use supplements that much.  Eating was better and tasted much better.
and keep moving!

Keith was good mates with Pete Grymkowski. Pete was a top contender back in the day. He was one of the owners of Golds Gym and made millions out of that chain when it was sold. He was generous to his friends and Keith was always telling stories about Pete and his fancy lifestyle. The guy used to tip big. Like $50 to parking lot guys. That sort of thing. He had Rolls Royce cars, fancy Porsches, etc., etc. I think Keith wanted to be more successful like Pete was. Somehow they parted ways about two years ago and haven't been mates since. That is a real shame. Keith wasn't pleased about that I can tell you. It was like getting kicked when he was down. In fairness to Pete I have no idea what happened between them so am only relating Keith's side.

Keith: DOn't worry I'll tell Pete.  He is like my brother and my kids godfather.

Yes Pete is very candid.  He has told me unreal stories about his use.  He once came to Hawaii to guest pose.  He was about 12 pounds over his competiton weight.  He liked to guest pose as good as he looked when he competed.  So he asked to be not disturbed for two days.  He said he never left them room and was talking something introveinously.  Well he came tothe show at exactly 264 and wowed the crowd.  He told me his song he guest posed with but I can't remember.  But it was very high energy.  Has anyone here seen Pete guest pose and any pictures.  He used to tell me the stuff he took but I can't remember.  The thing I do remember is how he told me he would do morphine so that he wouldn't feel the pain of the pump so he could do more reps.  He was a nut.

Keith knew a lot about gyms because he trained in quite a few, owned some and managed others.

That's not "old school". The 70's and early 80's.

CHrome Universal Machines, Nautilus was popular, 100 CIBA D-bol were $25, the bench press had those close stands so the bar bounced and bent when you took it off and put it back on, the only cardio was a bike that you twisted a little wheel to tighten the band around the front tire, index cards were the only things a front desk needed for membership, no personal trainers (you just ask someone to work in), gang showers (coed too), lots of clanging of weights (no plastic or rubber), deep knurled handles so you got nice big callasses, that leather band thing you put around your waist and it wiggle the fat off, the wooden seat that rotated around to make your ass small. Simple. Workout, sweat take shower. Your name shows up on the chalk board behind the front counter alongside Arnold S.,Lou F, Franco C. telling everyone in the gym you are late with your $150 per year membership.

The old gymI trained at back in 1973 or so some great inventions.  The guy who owned was an older man who built a building behind his house for the gym.  Had a ground level boxing ring too.  He worked at a steel place.  And allot fo the weight were gears and metal wheels that he would cutoff pieces to make them weigh what they should.  Then he painted the wieght on them.  So when you benched you could have maybe a couple 45's along with a gear and a steel plate and whatever else there was.  The pulldown was a cable with a handle.  The cable went up into the rafters and around a bicycle rim and then connected to a rod with a hook.  To load weight, you would have to unclip the cable hold onto it and grab a weight and slide it on the rod then reclip the cable.

We also had a neat poster that had a picture of Arnold on it.  It had his measurements too.  In additon there was a chart that had different heights on it.  What it did was it would tell you what measuerements you needed at your particualr height to be in proportion to Arnold.  SO if you were 5'8" you could see how big your arms, chest, thighs, calves, neck, waist, forearms and other parts would have to be to be proportionate to Arnold.  It was neat.

Okay I will try to start this one.  This thread will be for TRAINING STORIES ONLY.  Stories from inside the gym.

The city I grew up as a kid was Hawthorne, CA. Later moved to Manhattan Beach where I lived till I was 30 then moved to Hawaii.

In Hawthorne there was a man named Doc Duran.  he was collegiate star in the shot.  He was an alternate on the olympic team way back.

Anyway in the early 60's and several neighborhood dads decided to build a gym at Doc's house.  he turned his garage and added somemore space into the classic gym

No way in the world was this place bigger than 1500 sq. ft.  It had a 14' boxing ring and even a shower and toilet.  Very soon it became the place in the area to go get muscles.  Because of Doc's background and the numerous pictures around the gym of himself being all huge and everything, everyone who played a sport at Hawthorne High and Lawndale trained at Doc's Gym.

It cost $20 a month.  with that you could go anytime to train 24 hours.  as long as you turn off all the lights, and made sure the water wasn't running.  There were no locks. Everyone who trained there had there own workout book with their name on the front.  Every night Doc would spend hours going over what you did the day before.  He would then put your next workout in the book.  he was the personal trainer to about 100+ kids.  The firstday he had do certain exercises to get an idea of what exercise to do and how much weight to use.

It amazes me now to think how many people went through that gym that he personally trained and taught.

The euqipment was something else entirely.  Cable machines were the old on the wall type.  He had a push press made with cables and angle iron.  Many other cables machines had old bicycle rims as the pulleys.  All the benches he made himself and covered them.

Many of thelarger plates had pieces cut out of them to make them weigh the correct weight.  They were made from flywheels and giant gears. Only one Olympic bar to bench with.  the other bench press had a chain connected to it so it wouldn't fall on you.  No A/C.  The dust was amazing.  The members either cleaned it or it didn't get cleaned.

This was my first experince in a gym.  For a true "getdown" gym this was it.  But it was fun and I learned allot from Doc.  He couldn't remember everyones name so he called everyone Charles.
