Dear Amy: "I know I'm Right" was miffed when he brought fine wine to a dinner party and the wine wasn't served with dinner.

I disagree with your response and think the hostess' action (She thanked him when she accepted the wine but didn't serve it that night) was in poor taste.

The hostess "scooped" the fine wine and in return, served him cheap swill.

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book and the hostess should be ashamed of herself.

A host should always offer to serve the food or wine that has been brought by the guest.

I bring my good wine to the party and leave it in the car. If fine wine is being poured by the hostess, I will return to the car and bring in my wine to share saying I forgot to bring it in.

If swill is being served, I excuse myself. I have a wine opener in my car and fill my glass with my own stash, then return to the party.

When you bring wine, you should expect it not to be opened.  It is a gift for the host(ess) for them to do with as they please.  If you don't like it, bring another hostess gift.  Anyone who serves "cheap swill" at a dinner party is likely clueless when it comes to wine, otherwise they wouldn't intentionally embarrass themselves by serving it.  In the case of someone who knows how to pair wine with food, bringing a bottle and expecting it to be opened is presumptuous as the host(ess) planned the menu and selected what they felt to be the appropriate wine.  The only time I would expect a wine gift to be opened is if I contacted the host first, asked if I could bring the wine for dinner and asked what was on the menu.

Thunderbird, Night Train, Boone's Field and a few others were the usual suspects in most of my friends Friday night lives.

x2.  It is common at a dinner party for the host to receive several bottles of wine in one evening from different guests.  It is up to the host to decide what wine to serve with dinner.  if you bring a bottle, it is a gift for the host to use how and when he sees fit--including regifting!  ::)
