2.5 is nice, big in my opinion, but nice...IF the 3 "C" are all good.  Don't matter how big the diamond is if you buy it full of flaws.

yes, unless its cubic zirconia (spelling).  Sorry but if you propose to someone that the ring is the tipping point then she aint worth it.

Gotta agree w/Laura here 2.5 is nice but BIG lol - are we talking a solitare or 3-stone ring?

And Migs couldn't be more right:

Diamonds are a worse hit than a new car depreciation wise.
But if diamonds it is, Go for quality as LL said. The $z would be better spent (appreciate) in precious metals and quality colored stones. DeBeers still has  price way out of sync w/ value.

I missed practically this whole season of the Office.  Is this a real question or did Jim propose with a 2.5 carat ring?

Laura is correct, ...this is one instance when size is irrelevant.  :P
If the other C's of  "Cut, Colour, & Clarity" aren't there, ...the 4th C of Carat doesn't matter..

Agreed Laura, my best friends uncle owns a jewler. Bigger doesn't mean better. Go a little smaller but higher quality. Good cut and high color with little to no flaws.

I've heard the "standard" suggestion is to buy her a ring worth 3 months of your salary.

Very, very Poor expenditure for most young couples at the worst time possible. Diamonds cant even be called and investment except for the most knowledgable collectors.

I agree. I bought my wife  a 1/2 carat and used the rest of the money to help pay for a new house of which it's equity is far greater than the increase in value of her diamond.

We paid off our wedding / college debts. Every 3-5yrs I seem to upgrade it by 1/2 carat as we become more and more secure but only because I want her to have (cause she deserves) nice things...not for investment purposes. Don't forget...I also have 4 kids to put through college.

Honestly, most women are happy to get most anykind of ring if the guy asking is her true love. Knowing that your loved and wanted forever is usually good enough ;). If I asked a  girl to marry me and she complained about the ring....uh....I'd have to re-think my proposal.

I couldn't agree more. The Thai girls prefer gold jewelery, and lots of it ;). It has gone up so much the last year it's not funny. They see the gold as a asset and beautiful jewelery.
Bangkok has outstanding bargains on 22.5K and up gold work. The labor is so cheap that intricate designs go practically at the daily spot market price of gold.

North American gold is a joke. It's all 10K, ...maybe 14K if you're lucky to find it.

Italian gold is mostly 18K, and then you have other parts of the world who work primarily with 22K

Personally I don't really see the need.  I have been married and didn't have an engagement ring.  Mike is old fashioned though.  When/if the time comes, he feels it proper to ask with a ring.
