For years people have gone ape shit over Elvis from Elvis impersonations, to visiting Graceland, etc.. And now with the death of another
pedophile music legend (so society thinks) Michael Jackson seems to be causing quite a stir.
So in the end, will Elvis still tromp MJ?

Michael Jackson is more popular to answer the question, but only because he is more recent. Personally I used to like his music back in the 70's and early 80's until it was becoming obvious he was a pedophile. Unlike most Americans, I can't look past that because I like a song.

Some people may like MJ better, but Elvis is the greatest ever. As someone else just said, he and his music have stood the test of time. People still listen to his music now and he is a true icon. We'll have to see if MJ can reach the same level of greatness in the future.
Elvis also had one of the best voices ever in my opinion. He also starred in several popular movies back then, its not even close.

Elvis' early music was based off of black music...hell his very first hit was "That's Alright Mama" originally sung by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. Elvis would walk down Beale St and see Pee Wee Crayton, BB King, T-Bone Walker and numerous other black musicians, steal their tricks (dress style, the hip wiggle even came from these guys) and sang gospel music by the Soul Stirrers, Gospel Hummingbirds and all sorts of other race artists at the time.

We had a congressmen complaining about serious issues that needed to be addressed on air. But, they couldn't get any air time, because the news network were all locked on Jackson. Even major press conferences by President Obama couldn't get Michael Jackson bumped off the air.
His funeral gobbled up all three major networks and all the cable news networks as well. MTV did special after special after him, stating how Jackson changed the face of music videos and entertainment, especially for black artists, as MTV was originally designed to be an outlet for rock music. The folks there talk about how initially they wouldn't even play Jackson's videos. When they finally did, begrudingly, business really picked up. They went from not wanting to even air his videos to breaking their necks to get first crack at them.

By sales, it's still Elvis by a good bit. Elvis had great popularity in America, Western Europe, even bits of the Eastern Bloc, and Asia. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if MJ is judged more popular in the next few decades, he still sound a bit fresher in my opinion.

Director Antoine Fuqua (Emancipation) revealed on Instagram Monday morning that Jackson's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will play the iconic musician in the upcoming Michael.
"Proud to announce @jafaarjackson as Michael — the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop. Coming soon," Fuqua wrote alongside a photo of Jaafar practicing some of Michael's legendary moves in a very familiar outfit.
Michael is the latest in a recent trend of musician biopics that have so far fared well with both audiences and awards bodies. For me.. I was a prince fan...regardless of MJ. I appreciate MJ. He unlike Elvis, wrote and orchestrated his hits. But Elvis was an entity to himself at the time. MJ was a musical genius that wrote most of his hits. But Prince was a force to be reckoned with. He was multi talented and as we saw in his appearance with Gently Weeping, he took no prisoners. I hesitate to guage them against each other and I'm comfortable in saying that they made an impact

This may be old news but if ANYONE has not heard Princes version of Nothing Compares 2U with Rosie Gaines live.... give it not one... but 3 listens. The problem is we are all use to Shenead's verson, which is phenomenal, ... but Prince does it live with Rosie Gaines. 1st time I heard it I was unimpressed, because I was conditioned. I went to a Paul McCartney concert a few years ago (nh). It was interesting that there were people there born in at least six different decades who all knew every word to every one of these 50-year-old Beatles songs. I'm not sure there are any other musicians like that, certainly not many.
There are similar cases on smaller scales, e.g. there are Bob Dylan songs that "everyone" knows, Jimmy Buffet etc., but with the Beatles it's like every song.
