R.I.P Ed.

Probably about 10 years ago at the Arnold I saw Ed at a booth. He was in a wheel chair and looked in rough shape then.

Anyhow there was no line to meet him and I went up to introduce myself and say hello. I told him because of pumping iron I always think he is the greatest poser ever and he looked at me and said "Im sure it's easy to be cocky when you're young, I was probably arrogant when I was young too".   I think he thought I said I was the best poser, or something along those lines, so I just awkwardly stared at him and said it was a privilege to meet him.

Big fan of Nick and his videos. Odd though that he would be the one contacted regarding Ed Corney's death. Corney was from Hawaii and had a big following here back in the day.

What was more fascinating to me was not that Corney loves Corvettes but that Nick owns two and plans on getting a third brand new one. The guy is 26 years old and comes across as just an average working guy. Must be getting some decent YouTube ching.

From Lonnie Teper

Sadly, the new year brought with it some depressing news...legend Ed Corney, called the greatest poser of all time by former IRON MAN Magazine Publisher John Balik, passed away this morning at 85. Sources have told me Corney suffered a brain aneurism late Christmas evening and hung on for another week before he couldn't fight any longer.
Corney, one of the icons of the Golden Age of Bodybuilding, had a great physique but the conversation always turned to his posing talents whenever his name came up.
"Ed spoke to the audience like no other bodybuilder in my 50+ years of experience," Balik said Monday night after hearing the news. "His charismatic presence electrified his audience. Ed projected love and everyone loved him back. RIP my friend!"

Corney appeared on the covered of the book "Pumping Iron" and on the posters for the movie, which enhanced his popularity even more. I remember getting a phone call from a close friend of Ed's in 1999, I think it was, letting me know Ed had suffered a heart attack undergoing shoulder surgery, leading to two strokes (due to medication given to him for the heart attack)and time in a coma. But that wasn't enough to keep this fella down for long. Every time I would see him at an event, he had that famous Corney smile, greeting his legions of fans and nary a word of sorrow about his unfortunate health issues.

Corney won titles at the IFBB MR. America, the IFBB Universe and the Masters Olympia 60+ on two occasions en route to the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame. I will always remember how courteous Ed was every time we would run into each other, complimenting me on my writing and emceeing, when he was the one deserving of all the accolades. Here I am, in the presence of one of the games greatest players, and he's making me feel special. Special is a good word to describe Ed Corney, on and off a bodybuilding stage. Gone, but never, ever forgotten. Thank you for all that you did for the world of bodybuilding. Here are a couple of Balik photos showing the Master doing what he did best.

RIP, my man!

He was already in his 40’s in pumping iron

No Ed was real nicen unless you meant me, lol. He complimented me on my arms, asked me to flex, I've got a decent build, especially at that time, but i'm a natty so its  not like i'm a stand out amongst the freaks at an expo.

He was being nice and when I hit the bicep pose that's when I told him the pumping iron comment.

Its shocking to think he was already 40 back when he was in pumping iron. Great physique, poser and dude.

Really? I thought I saw a vid where he says that he just made a 100,000 views or subscribers, not sure which. He said that he's starting to take it more seriously and mentioned that he "hopes" to make some money off of it.

I got the impression that it was just starting to get him some extra money. Maybe the vid was old. It was one of the those question/answer type vids about him personally. How he trains? Supps he takes? Favorite music... stuff like that. I thought it was recent.

Surprised at how young he is when I first saw him. Great voice. I like his personality and the way he comes across. No flashy, crazy stuff people do to get attention and views. Just loves bbing and follows it closely and then shares the stuff he's learned. Also, in the process he's become very knowledgeable. Marquee Brownlee is kind of like that on the tech side and I did read that he makes about $700/day on YouTube but he also does a lot of other stuff that generates income. Only 25 years old.

Only in America.

So I'm at the gym today and I see two girls that I know doing squats. They are both pretty hard core and one of them competes and does pretty well. Anyway, I tell them if they remember Ed Corney from PI. One says he kind of sounds familiar. They both said they've seen the movie so I mentioned the squatting scene with Arnold and how when I was a kid I use to think of that scene to inspire me. I also mentioned that he was from Hawaii. They both kind of smiled and one said, "How old was he?"

They didn't know who he was.

I kind of asked around the gym if they remember Ed Corney. I picked people that were at least in their forties. Still nothing.

I even asked a trainer, who was probably in his late forties, if he knew who Arthur Jones was. Never heard of him. When I told him he developed Nautilus and virtually all the machines we have in the gym today is based on his original equipment with the cams and everything he then proudly boasted that he has heard of Nautilus.

Kind of sad really.

That`s because todays gyms are populated with regular average people,(most who have no clue as to why they are even there), as opposed to back in the day when most members were bodybuilding,powerlifters,arm-wrestling competitively,or Olympic weightlifters........... . among other serious track & field athletes who trained hard with the heavy iron.

In a few words................... ..todays gyms suck.

It brings back fond memories to me to have been involved all those great years full of great bodybuilders and gym camaraderie, but in the same vein,I feel a huge loss because that atmosphere no longer exists.

Anyone my age, older, or a bit younger, knows exactly what I`m trying to convey.  :(

Who gives a shit? Let them work out in peace. Let people who actually do care know the history of the sport.

On the same token, you can apply that to today. Wes, can you name even a few of the top guys competing in the Classic or Physique division? No? Blasphemy! ... Exactly. You get the point now.

As long as they aren't fucking around in the gym and disrupting it for people who actually want to use it for its intention, just go about your business.

If you want to educate them, then do it. Start a YouTube or Instagram page and educate people. Apart from that... people are free to know or not know what they want.

Pretty funny, giving advice about something of which you clearly know nothing or at least very little. Despite Ed Corney's advice, things didn't go that well for Arnold although he has only been married once.

you should have directed them to this site to get educated as to the history of bodybuilding and the iron sports.

LOL! I doubt showing them a website on my phone while on the gym floor will go over well with the girls. I did try to show them that short excerpt with Corny squatting with Arnold, even fast forwarding to the part where he eeks out that one rep,  and says, "Goddamn.", then doing that one last death rep. I said that will inspire them while they squatted. They just smiled politely and went back to their workout.

don't bother people when they're working out.  rule #1

replace your weights rule #2

there are more but that's enough for now

Shut the fuck up. I talk with them and others all the time. It's one thing to carry on an extended conversation and quite another to be polite and cordial with people you've become friends with and see socially for years.

Of course, I'm not as hard core as you are and you probably have the whole hoody and Beats head phone thing going on and I'm sure you have the physique to prove it.

Plus,if I want to hold old memories dear, what`s the big deal?

In other words,go fuck yourself newbie!

What an idiot that guy is. I wasn't giving a history lesson. I was passing on breaking news that a bbing legend has died and was just surprised that they never heard of him.

I saw Ed at the 2013 Orlando Pro expo [I believe], as I was going around getting interviews from various pro bodybuilders.  I said "I'll get Ed next time."

Only after moving to get another video elsewhere on the expo floor, did I stop and think "Oh wait.  Ed is 81.  Maybe I should have gotten that interview this time."

I also saw a Facebook post that stated that YouTubers like the Hodge Twins had big lines at the expos, yet a legend like Ed was sitting at his table, with next to no people in line waiting for an autograph, and how he said that reflects negatively on the bodybuilding fan base.  I don't know if anyone else saw that semi-viral picture thread.

I had assumed Ed was 81 in 2013 because I recalled Pumping Iron stating that he was 43 years old - and that was in 1975.  Making his year of birth 1932.  But I suppose the producers of Pumping Iron got his date of birth wrong.

Good choice!

As for Ed, well as many times as I'd been to the original Gold's I don't recall ever meeting him but can say that he was still an inspiration to me via the book and film, "Pumping Iron".  He will outlive turds like Coleman, Cutler and Phildo both in total years and in the collective memory of men that train for more than their ego.

Amen Brother.

I was a friend of Ed's before he turned pro. I think that happened in one of the contests held within the San Jose area at which I attended along with one of Ed's training partners and my good USMC bud by the name of Wanye Anderson who also passed away recently.

I think it was Bob's Gym in Newark, Cal. in which both Wayne and Ed  trained.

I had breakfast/lunch with Ed at the bodybuilding world's famous hole in wall restaurant in Venice (THE GERMAN's) on the day that he decided to retire from competition but don't ask me what year that occured.

I know a lot of the old-timers and have got to say that Ed stood out as one of the great all around gents in this game!

ED, RIP!

You too, WAYNE!

My gym has the original Gary Jones Hammer strength machine. No one knows who Gary Jones is let alone his father.

I'm still friends with Gary.  Met his dad twice.  Dad was crazy. Gary is not crazy.  Dad died rich. Gary is filthy rich.

PS.  Gary Jones dad was Arthur Jones... he invented Nautilus.

PSS. Ed Corney was a good man and he will be missed.  A real legend in bodybuilding.

Does Gary workout and keep in good shape? How old is he now and did Arthur have any other children? I'm a huge fan of Arthur Jones and has Gary given you any insights, the inside skinny as it were, on his father? What he was like in his private life.

I think it's an injustice that he isn't more widely known like his contemporary, Joe Weider. I believe that it had a lot to do with his personality and being so difficult to get along with.

P last time I saw Gary he was in dreadful shape. Just skinny fat. Sort of embracing

Google "Gary Jones Hammer strength" and you'll find some pics and current news.

Arthur was frequently suing Gary.   Jones Sr. was quite clearly unbalanced.

I don't know if Gary has any brothers or sisters.

Thanks for that info. I did google Gary but he looked OK to me. Doesn't look like a guy that workouts regularly but didn't look unhealthy. Just like his father. I think at some point working out and trying to keep muscle mass drops precipitously as you get older and trying to run a business.

I wonder what Jones' senior was suing his son for? Very Ferrigno-est
