Although he died over a century ago in 1960 and was a proponent of absurdism (existence in general is absurd so that the world lacks meaning or a higher purpose and is not fully intelligible by reason), Camus had a remedy   for the rancor so ubiquitous today:
“In a world whose absurdity appears to be so impenetrable, we simply must reach a greater degree of understanding among men, a greater sincerity. We must achieve this or perish. To do so, certain conditions must be fulfilled: men must be frank (falsehood confuses things), free (communication is impossible with slaves). Finally, they must feel a certain justice around them.”

Inflation wise $.23 is probably just under $3 today.

What year was it $.23?  1947?

$.23 in 1947 is $3.01 today.  https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

https://www.titlemax.com/discovery-center/planes-trains-and-automobiles/average-gas-prices-through-history/

When I was a kid in 1969 gas was about 36 cents/gallon.

That is $2.87 today.

You're about 70 years old right?  You weren't born in 1947.

1951, I'm talking 1967 is when i started driving. I pulled in one time and told the guy to give me a buck and a quarter 's worth. that was more than 5 gallons.

My junior year in high school 1998 there was a Race Trac gas that had it for $.88 gallon for a bit.

There have been periods where there were extremely low gas prices due to oil gluts and over-production.

For example gas was super cheap in the 1990s.

I remember paying under 90 cents a gallon.

Gas is expensive now because refining capacity is down, not because of a shortage of oil.

The U.S. can supply all the oil it needs internally if necessary.

The U.S. imports oil because it's cheaper to import foreign oil for the coastal city refineries than to transport oil from the oil fields in Texas and  Midwest.

you are correct, the US is a net oil exporter.  I would counter to say that we are forced to import oil because it’s more profitable for our oil companies to sell it overseas.

Regardless, this doesn’t contradict my original statement.  The American lifestyle depends on cheap oil.

Today's gas prices seem to have no effect on Las Vegas visitor counts as the hotels seem to be pretty damn full from Thursday thru Sunday.

And the hotel room rates have doubled and even tripled but still they come.

And the $25 minimum table bets along the Strip casinos don't appear to bother the suckers who lose their bankroll faster than ever .... but it's hard to find a seat to get into the game.

I  expect it to end real soon, but I are dumb when figuring out what the hell is happening today and the days that follow.

My advice to you Olympia fans: If you are coming to Vegas, bring lots of money. You'll definitely be needing it!

People want to bitch about the price of gas to fill their own tanks but that is not where we get fucked. It's everywhere else. The cost of shipping raises prices and now when it costs me $30 more to fill my car, my grocery bill is up from $100 to $150, everything I buy is jacked up in price.  I am getting fucked every which way possible.

saw a guy paying for petrol bitching at the guy on the till about how he had just paid for the most expensive tank of fuel like he was the first guy to mention it.

People should stop moaning at the staff in the garage, its not them thats charging for fuel

In Houston it was 0.86 per gallon in 1998.

I remember filling up my truck which had two 16 gal tanks for under $30.

Didn't last long, it went back to like $1.20 ish shortly after.
