How many deaths a day would you consider to be out-and-out? The nature of their integration and tactics makes a battlefield confrontation never likely.

No, not a civil war. Battle lines aren't drawn along religious lines; that's just the grand paintbrush approach to reporting done by the media. Some groups with agendas are quick to use religion as a smoke screen for carrying out their vendettas, and some people are stupid enough to believe them. There is hatred and animosity between Shias and Sunnis, no doubt, but its not universal or always taken to a militant extreme. In some places Shias and Sunnis get along quite well.
