Rumor: Randy to headline UFC 91 in Portland, OR.
« on: August 27, 2008, 07:12:19 PM »
Rumors are starting to swirl that former UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture could headline UFC 91 as the organization swings into Portland, OR, for the first time ever in November.

Goldenboy, a respected member of the mixedmartialarts.com forum who has provided credible tips in the past, provided the info earlier this afternoon. He first broke the news of Aleksander Emelianenko failing his blood test.

In addition, the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota reported last thursday that the UFC had Brock Lesnar in their sights for UFC 91. They apparently informed Lesnar of their wishes to have the WWE superstar compete at the event earlier that week.

What does this mean? If both of them compete at UFC 91, there is a chance they could compete against each other. However, there have also been rumors that Lesnar will be facing Cheick Kongo at the Portland event. Then again, with the Couture Saga in full swing and the popularity of Lesnar, a battle between the two would make for one of the biggest PPV events of all time.

While Couture’s participation at UFC 91 is far from official, Eric, an amateur member of the Xtreme Couture gym where Randy trains, has confirmed that Couture is training to fight somebody in the near future.

The video featured above is of Couture training his students during pro practice. Tyson Griffin, Gina Carano, Kim Couture, Jay Hieron, and Martin Kampmann are featured in the session. This isn’t a video of Couture training for his upcoming fight.

Randy has one last fight left on his contract right? Maybe he should just get it over with and move on.

Does he have a 6 month no compete clause in his contract?

Dayum, a fight between Brock and Randy would be a huge draw.  Randy is on his way out, for sure, and Brock is just getting started. Randy is 215-220 for his fights and Brock DIETS to 265, then carbs back up to 280.  Both have wrestling backgrounds.  Randy is strong as a horse, but Brock is a bull.  Randy's intelligence in the ring far outweighs Brocks. I'd actually love to see this fight.

Just read an article on MMAJUNKIE.COM to reafirm what chutebox stated. Looks like Rand will be on for UFC 91 at the end of the year, but doesn't state any possible opponents. I really doubt they give him a crack at Nog! Well wait a minute, Randy is the champ, I forgot!

Randy Vs Nog would be a good fight.
Couture's strategy Vs Nog's persistance.
Should be an interesting "chess" match

Here's that read for you guys...

Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture could return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship by year's end as part of an out-of-court settlement with the organization.

Multiple sources close to the fighter, speaking exclusively to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), today said that Couture is willing to fight once more for the UFC, possibly before the end of the year, as a potential resolution to his ongoing legal battles with the fight promotion.

However, Couture himself could not be reached for comment, and it's unknown if the UFC is even considering the offer at this point.

According to one source, as part of Couture's concession to return the octagon, the 45-year-old UFC hall-of-famer would want to walk away "clear and free" from the organization after the bout.

Couture (16-8 MMA, 13-5 UFC), who hasn't fought since a third-round TKO victory over fellow UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga in August 2007, resigned from the organization two months later over what he perceived to be a lack of respect from UFC officials, issues over his pay, and the UFC's inability to sign then-top free agent Fedor Emelianenko.

However, Zuffa LLC officials believe, per his fight contract, that Couture's next two bouts must be in the UFC. Couture had said that he wanted his resignation upheld so he could move on with his career, including a potential bout with Emelianenko outside the UFC.

Back in February, Couture signed a deal with Mark Cuban's Dallas-based HDNet Fights promotion. The organization then filed suit against the UFC in Dallas district court to get a declaratory judgment concerning the contractual status of Couture. However, earlier this month, a Texas appeals court ruled in favor of Zuffa and granted the organization's request for a stay against the motion.

In conditionally granting the stay, the court effectively deferred the case between Zuffa and Couture to arbitration to determine the fighter's contractual obligations to the UFC.

The ruling all but ensures that this case will be decided by a Nevada arbitrator and not by a Texas court, though it's likely that HDNet will appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. Arbitration between Zuffa and Couture reportedly has been under way in Las Vegas since early July.

Despite Couture's resignation, during a UFC 82 press conference in March, UFC President Dana White said that he had offered Couture a fight with now-interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on two different occasions. Although the fight never came to fruition, White has never ruled out the possibility of Couture returning to the organization.

In the other squabble between the UFC and Couture, the five-time champion's employment contract, which is separate from his fight contract, is the focus of a breach of contract lawsuit filed by Zuffa on Jan. 14 in Las Vegas. Zuffa contends that Couture violated the one-year non-compete clause in his contract by having his name and likeness used to promote fights outside of the UFC.

Couture's UFC employment contract expires on Oct. 11 of this year.

Seems as even more information about Randy is starting to flow. I read that Randy has been training against much larger training partners in anticipation of fighting Brock Lesner in November and if he gets passed him, then he will face Fedor in Feb 09. Wow! Randy has his hands full!

Rumors regarding UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture's (16-8 MMA, 8-5 UFC) possible return to the UFC, first reported by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), are continuing to build momentum.

Five Ounces of Pain recently reported that preliminary negotiations would have Couture return for UFC 91 on Nov. 15 in Portland, Ore.

New reports from BloodyElbow.com confirm the previously reported negotiations between Couture and the UFC. Additionally, the reports claim that Couture's next fight would be the UFC 91 main event against Brock Lesnar (2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

It is unknown at this time whether the bout would be for Couture's UFC heavyweight title.

Couture has been inactive for over a year while waiting out the Oct. 11 end of his current UFC contract. BloodyElbow.com is reporting the bout with Lesnar would be under a new contract that would lock Couture into the UFC long-term, but the new deal would also likely pay more and offer additional benefits.

MMA Rated has also reported that the UFC is considering a departure from recent policy and may be open to co-promoting a bout with M-1 Global between Couture and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (28-1). M-1 Global currently holds Emelianenko's contract.

The UFC previously tried and failed to secure Emelianenko's services. It is unclear if the issues that previously prevented the bout between Couture and Emelianenko have now been solved.

Additional reports from the Wrestling Observer note that Couture's new deal would be for three fights. In addition to Lesnar and Emelianenko, possible future opponents discussed with Couture include UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and a fourth bout with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.

MMAjunkie.com was unable to confirm the multiple reports with Couture.

Here is some more recent information on this subject: lads. Anyway, WTF.... How does Lesnar get a title shot right away, by beating out Herring??? He got taken out by Mir. I say he should fight Nog, get peeled back, and climb the ladder: the way a fighter should.

I agree, Nog should fight Courtre first and if Randy....win or loose give him his crack at Fedor...he still deserves it!

Wait a minute, but Nog will be fighting Mir...and that ladies and gettleman, pretty much wraps up the heavy weight division!

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

As rumors swirl regarding UFC heavyweight champion Randy Coutures return to the UFC to fight Brock Lesnar in November many situations present themselves as to who should be getting title shots and who is the real heavyweight champion. Many people see Brock Lesnar’s 2-1 record and think that there is no way he deserves a title shot. And that is a very valid point. There is also an argument on whether this is a title match or if Randy should fight Nogueira for the title to unify the belts. I have come up with a solution that I think is pretty fair for all fighters involved.

First, Randy Couture should not be recognized as the current heavyweight champion, Nogueira should be recognized as the sole champion. My reasoning for this is Couture has not defended the belt in over a year and chose to sit out. Therefore, in all fairness he should be stripped of the title and Nogueira declared the undisputed champion. That brings more value to the December PPV of Nogueira Vs Frank Mir as being for the undisputed championship more valuable than if they were fighting for the interim belt. It also helps the Lesnar-Couture fight as people no longer need to worry about Brocks undeserving record.

Also, if Lesnar wins the fight he has beaten a proven champion and more people will see him as deserving a shot against the Mir/Nogueira fights winner. If Couture wins, then he could be in line for a shot at the winner of Mir/Nogueira and the UFC could hype it up as a fight where the legend is coming back to take back the title he never lost.

Of course, one must remember that there just have been little rumblings of negotiations going on, and nothing has come up to 100% confirm that this fight will happen. And Couture could possibly play hardball and say the only way he comes back is if he is recognized as champion upon his return.

The above mentioned solution would be the best way to protect the value of the heavyweight championship as well as let the UFC set up a great fight in Lesnar-Couture with the winner facing the Mir/Nogueira winner.
