Post by: davie on October 06, 2006, 10:34:57 AM
Hey Guys and gals.
I have always kinds gone by notion that i should take my after workout shake with water (quicker absorption), and one just before bed with milk (slowly absorbed through night), what would u recommend i take my mid morning (meal 2) shake with?Milk to have it slowly absorbing until next meal, or water to get it absorbed faster??

for the mid morning shake i would stick with a good whey isolate mixed with water...then you would try to get the meal after that within about 3 hrs or so.

you could add some flax to it...or eat something like a baked potato with it if you need more carbs.

I also vote for water.  I try to vary absorption rates by the type of protein (whey v. milk/egg based).  I'm not a big fan of milk though, high sugar and carb content right before bed is not a good idea.

If you feel like a treat try HOOD milk, very low in sugar very low in carbs.

wow, I never realized how complex this diet thing for a body builder could be.

I've been using skim milk with my after workout shake. Folks on this site seem to think skim is better then soy, so I switched over. I still drink soy milk with my cereal though.

I'm going to have to look into this casien shake stuff for prior to bed time. Is there a brand you guys could recommend? or a certain % of something in the container I should be looking for? thx for any help.

If you can stomach it, try one cup of low fat cottage cheese before bed.  Otherwise, Trader Joe's sells an affordable Milk and Egg Protein which works nicely for pre-bed consumption.

milk with your post workout shake isnt a good idea...you want the shake to be as fact acting as possible...its best to go with a hydrolized whey with dextrose/maltodextrin mixed with water.

You guys crack me up sometimes!

Do you know what you get when you mix fast proteins (whey isoloate) with slower proteins (casein)?  You get just that!  The two don't chemically alter in your stomach and change to one - mid-fast-slow protein.  The whey will still get into your system fast and then the casein will still get into your system slower.  If anything, this IS the way to go, because you'll get an immediate flow of BCAA's from the Whey, then a nice little time-released BCAA's from the milk!

Not to mention, the lactose in the milk will increase insulin output, getting the whey protein into your system even faster!  As far as the "excessive carbs" in skim milk - there's friggin' 13g per cup???  That's a lot?

Bullshit argument of the industry.

Did you know that the western world is a selective bunch of countries that actually keeps drinking milk?
It is true that we can digest lactose after our baby-years, but the production of the enzyme lactase drops. Lactase is used to digest lactose.

Drinking loads of milk does harm simply due to the fact that lactose can't paste the intestine normally without enough lactase.
If there isn't enoug lactase, your intestine will still try to absorp the lactose, but the problem is that the sugar is to bug, and keeps stucking in the intestinewall preventing other foods to absorped.

The following problem is that natural-intestine-bacteries start attacking the milksuger resulting in gasproduction, and a lot of it. Your stomach start rumbling, eventually leaving the body backdoors.

Moderate use of milk due to his advantages is recommended,
but no excessive use.
