PRIDE doesn't release salary figures but I've heard Fedor makes roughly 1 million per fight but who knows. Mirko is probably up there, if not higher, due to his gigantic popularity in Japan. For UFC, if you take into account all the cans and new fighters making like $10k a fight, I'd say the average is around 30-40k, with champions generally making $100k+.

f**k fedor is worth ever penny
true, but there's NO WAY IN HELL he's making 1 mill a fight.. maybe $300k at the absolute MOST

I agree.. 1 mill is a alot
-
if they got paid what they should they would be making millions at the top. the abuse and punishment they put themselves through is not truely worth it..same as bodybuilding.

Do you realize how utterly gigantic MMA is in Japan? PRIDE sells out 50k+ seat arenas for their events. I wouldn't be shocked to be seeing the top fighters making around that. You do realize that Fedor is the greatest fighter to ever grace this planet? 1 million might be a stretch but I would say $600k+ at least. There's a reason all the top fighters are in PRIDE.
-
yeah, look at Rich franklin. UFC's MW poster boy was getting sopmething like $32,000 a fight! The Pride fighters are the most financially secure fighters in MMA. Bob Sapp earns more than most UFC guys!

They mamke enough at the top to make it worthwhile. Think about the sponsorships, too.
-
sponsorship..thats not the point. dana white is making millions while paying these guys peanuts. its not right.

I was talking about PRIDE mostly. UFC fighters are horribly underpaid, in my opinion.

Nobody is forcing them to do it.

Nobody is forcing them to do it.
They really don't have much of a choice. PRIDE can't sign every one.
-
It's their choice to step in the ring. If they don't like it they can learn a new skill. It's just capitalism.
-
shit if they are paying that well amybe Ill start fighting again

60 Minutes said Matt Hughes is a millionaire. :-\

Believe me, I'm a HUGE Fedor fan, but a mill a fight? that's getting a little out there... $500k sounds more realistic.

i have never met fedor and don't really want to, but from what the americans over in japan are saying, i really doubt he is quite getting 500k per fight. sapp has been the highest paid in mma simply because he was the biggest attraction. fedor is obviously a better fighter but he doesn't score anywhere near as well as the likes of sapp, hunt or mirko at the box office.
ufc is ridiculous. white has no longevity plan, he just recycles the same guys over and over again. unless your one of his very small stable your not getting squat, and even some of those guys get diddly shit. many fighters walk away with nothing at all after expenses are paid.
mma will never approach the hights of boxing, talent wise, whilst simple minded red necks like dana white have got their monopoly and dana will do every thing he can to keep that monopoly ie not let iceman or silva fight fedor because once he lets a competitor in his bank balance is going south.
if you have some fighting talent you head to the boxing gym, not mma. mma picks up the rejects and committed martial artists like gracies, guys that are so far into it that they couldn't make a transition even if they wanted to.
this is why there are not many afro americans in mma, because if they are young and have talent they go for some real dollars in boxing.
better money, longer careers with less injuries. there are many joint injuries in mma and elbows mean more scarring = early retirement. you will obviously blind side the occasional elbow and butt in pro boxing (while the ref's not looking) which will cause scarring around the eyes but nothing like mma where elbows are a legitemate strike.
if you want to make anything in mma you have to get in quick and make your mark. sell, sell, sell! don't rely on anyone to promote you because it won't happen. be the guy everyone hates. it's easier than being the guy that everyone loves because it lasts longer eg. tito ortiz. if you think it's just about winning fights you're an idiot because that's not going to happen. if you were boxing your manager would pick your opponents and build you up slowly (assuming you had talent an were a potential money earner) because you're an individual in the business. in mma you're just chucked in there with the rest of the gladiators and only the strong survive. only one guy makes money eg. dana and he doesn't care who rises to the top, he gets paid either way.

Nice writing. Like you said, boxing is about managers and money, no real competition until title combats. Managers pick up your opponents, well that's the biggest bullshit in fighting sports. Not many afro-americans in MMA? Of course not, their asses would be seriously kicked whithout their beloved manager to "choose" the opponent. But not all is fairy tale, boxing is also known for having lots of "arranged fights", in order to make money sometimes you have to give a great show and then fall in the ring to fulfill the arrengement... MMA is about real challenge, do not even compare any boxer to Fedor or Mirko, boxers would't survive 1 minute in MMA. In one thing you are right, boxing can be much more profitable, for sure, but you have to "enter in the scheme" and mostly be under "somebody's orders" to get your paycheque. I think MMA is more a state o mind than the will of getting rich. Nobody goes to MMA to get rich, is about conquest spirit and take your body to the limit. MMA is the ultimate fighting sport, it represents several sports in one, superior physical and mental preparation, it hard and carreers are mostly short. I compare boxing to soccer, not really much of a competition until the final o the cup or championship, partial referees, manager "moves", etc....

you're right in the sense that there is a lot of macho pride in pro fighting sports, but fighting is costly (injuries, medical, etc) and careers are short.
at some point you have to come to your senses and realize this or you're going to have a depressing future.
this is not a hobby. when you commit to pro fighting you either do it with everything you've got or your a punching bag. if you don't put the time and effort in you're going to be a journey man making loose change. either way, at the end of your career you're going to end up with some permanent injuries (brain damage is common). by the time this happens if you haven't made smart choices you won't have 2 pennies to rub together and no skills to get a decent job. if, that is, you're healthy enough to work.
so, with that in mind, the smart will go where the money's at. if you're talented someone wise that gives a shit will BEAT it into you that you WILL go where the money's at.
fighting is and always has been a brutal business made up of liars, cheats, gangsters and those that get used up by them. it has got to be the most disingenuous business ever. there is no love whatsoever and every fighter feels like everyone is after their pound of flesh, lonely and ruthless. the actual fighting is the easy bit.
ok, this is getting depressing. i wondert if pro bbers go through the same shit ???

Pro bbers? First case I remember of total "brand submission for the bucks" is Greg Kovacs. I wonder if he made enough money to compensate what he did to his body. At his prime the guy weigthed more than 180 kgs at low bodyfat. words are that he was very strong, but then faced serious health problems... muscletech created him... and destroyded him as well...

well, i doubt muscle tech held a gun to his head. at the end of the day we all have to be held responsible for the decisions we make. he played the game a lived large for a while, but man, at some point they should have realized the guy just didn't belong on a bbing stage competing. i mean they didn't sign him up because he was mr olympia did they?
i wasn't aware he had significant health problems.

Wiki: Fedor started competing in combat sambo and mixed martial arts in 2000, because he "didn't have any money".
