Title: 2,000lb total, first meet
Post by: doison on February 05, 2007, 04:17:43 PM
Is that good for a 275-308lb first time powerlifter?
What about 1,900 raw?

By raw you mean no bench shirt?

Doing it RAW / drug free is phenominal (sp?)

RAW w/drugs...still phenominal

geared while drug free...still real damn good

Geared while using "gear"....not bad.

If it is your first meet, I would say that is extremely good

dude 1900 raw would be phenomenal. that's a 650 squat, 700 deadlift, and 550 bench or somewhere thereabouts, and those numbers are damn high even for someone experienced.

my first real meet is in april and i'm aiming for 1700 as a 275, and even that's a high estimate.

My buddy is strong as hell, and always trained as a powerlifter.
Problem is, he was a DI football player, and wasn't exactly a stud at that level.  He never really played much, so now he thinks he'll suck at lifting.
He's obviously the strongest guy at his gym, but his reply is "yeah, I'm strong for this little gym...but have you seen the freaks out there?  Andy Bolton is deadlifting 1,000lbs!"

So, he thinks his 750 dead would look tiny in comparison....I can't convince him that not ALL powerlifters are that strong.
I need to just get him to a meet, so he can see how well he'd do.

i don't believe for a minute that someone exists who thinks their 750 deadlift is small. what's your buddy's name, and where's he planning on competing?

He knows it's not small.....he's weird.  He feels like if he does a meet, and doesn't set a bunch of records, then it's a failure for him.  I don't know how to explain it.

I don't know much about powerlifting, but I've told him that he would probably win just about any local meet he did.  The guy has some fragile ego or something, becuase he says if he didn't win his weight class, he'd be embarassed to come back to the gym after everyone has been telling him how strong he is for years.

well the fact of the matter is a 750 raw pull is enormous, and if he sprang for a suit like an Inzer Fusion he'd likely be around 800, and anyone with an 800 pull their first time out is simply phenomenal. a 2000 raw total could be up near a 2400 geared total for a first timer, and i'm not sure i've ever heard of someone hitting that. let him know that even if he didn't win (though i imagine he would), the fact that he's a newbie hitting numbers like that would make him an instant celebrity.

I showed him this thread, and he said he was surprised at what people said.
He thinks 675-700 would be about tops without wraps, as he doesn't usually train that way.

It would take him a while to learn suits, so his first meet wouldn't be at those numbers most likely.

By the way, I'm the asshole you're aguing about with the 675 for 10 luke wood squats.  Please don't let that effect your answers regarding my friend.  I think I have him convinced to do the meet.

without straps, i'm assuming you mean. in which case that could be a serious factor. the difference between a wrist-strap pull and a normal pull isn't just grip strength, the mechanics of the lift changes a lot when it's your hands holding the bar themselves. now, some people do more without straps (like me) if you're the type who loses loads of strength the longer you stay attached to the bar. but up in the 700 range that's going to change, again, thanks to grip.

get your friend to do the meet if he wants, and tell him not to give a shit how he compares to anyone else.

"Hi, I bench 1200 for 3 reps.  Should I keep working out or just quit lifting weights completely?"

Good one.
It should have read "Hi, MY FRIEND bences 1200 for 3 reps."

"bences"?  Is this a new variation on the high pull?
