This seems to be becoming more and more common amongst the pros. Is it a side effect of abdominal distension, the gap in the middle between the abs?
-
That's genetic. The split is called the linea alba I believe. It's not a side effect, every person has it. Some more than others.

because he had a smaller gut and smaller ab muscles

Heavy roid use wreaks havoc on Abs.
You won`t find oversized and separated abs on any top Lifetime Natural, nor will you find a wide waist EVER!
Naturals look way better.

Phil needs to concentrate on bringing up his Chest and Back. His legs, shoulders, and arms are overpowering to say the least.

It will get bigger or smaller with drug use and/or how much you eat. But it's not something like skin that stretches out and when you lose weight it's still there hanging over your belt like a chuck of clay.
Find a pic where a BBer does NOT have that split....including naturals. Look at Shawn Phillips on the cover of Body Of Work, he's got a split that is similar to Dexter Jackson. Mike O'Hearn has than split, Skip LaCour has it. Every single person on earth has that split- again some more than others or some less than others. Drugs only affect the size to an extent, not whether it's there or not.

wrong I think that it is a weak point in the wall so that's where the muscles stretch to accomadate the increased IAF.
it's so sad to see people sacrfice their health for "gains" that are actually LOSSES, a true fool's .

Exactly, it's growth hormone that cause this widening. The Linea alba is connective tissue and GH has an "anabolic" effect on connective tissue, causing it to grow. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=15998337&dopt=Abstract ) So the guys taking GH will experience a widening effect at the center line of the abs.

try to find a pic of flex from the end of his career...the overeating and GH abuse took its toll on his midsection.

everyone's midsection grows as they age no matter what. i'm not denying gh+overeating increases this process, but what i was quoting in my previous post was the steriod part. i dont think synthetic testosterone, by itself, has a significant impact on waist line (besides the temorary hypertrophy of the abdominal muscle). you could argue that when the muscle increases, the linea alba, a tendon, also increases. but looking at hte ironagers we dont see significant linea alba separation/distention. these guys also ate a TON of food, so that kind of discounts the overeating theory a bit. the only thing left really is the gh/slin combo, which is generally the agreed upon cause of distention today.

Nonsense, it only grows if they accumulate Belly fat. Look at the recent pics of Zane.
EPIC DEFEATIST ATTITUDE
