well, im brazilian so i can speak a little i think LOL
since the guys have a great athletic physique, of course they can do some damage with high kicks and so on, but its not a 'real' fight ...i mean, it doesnt have real fighting situations (like muay thai). it does have very little punches if it has at all...Its more like a kind of athletic 'dance' then a martial art, (im not taking his credits...just stating the facts)
-
great to watch or use in a film fight scene, but very impractical in a real life situation IMO
-
It does offer broken rythm. But weak on the hands, no grappling, no clinch. So unless the practicioner is a high level fighter fighting against a low level fighter, no, I don't think it is practical.
-
Its great for breakdancing battles.
-
I think it is foolish and has no real use in fighting(probably good exorcise though)..

Wasn't it banned in the 1920's in Brazil because a group fighters used to wear razors on their feet? Plus the fact that they used Capoeira against soldiers successfully, so anybofy caught practicing Capoiera was put to death.
-
anybody caught practicing Capoiera was put to death.
don't know if that is true, but sounds like a good idea

im not an expert, so dont quote me on this...
for what i know, the slaves that where brought from Africa to here did have a kind of 'fight' or martial art...But the owners of lands and things like that would not allow this (training i mean), killing anyone who tried to train, because of course they where afraid of a riot or something like that...
so the slaves started to put the moviments of the fight in a kind of 'dance' with music and so on, so when other people look at it, it looks like a dance, but in fact was a way for them to still train their 'martial art' without anyone notice it...then the Capoeira was born

100% right.

You have to realize Karate TKD etc... were all effective in their day. But this is a different world you run into all the styles and get all the info on all arts! Thats why MMA proved certain styles are out dated and certain styles need to be modified and or combined with other styles that fill in weak points.
Think about this what are the chances of a dude in Brazil running in to a Kung Fu master?
Now adays you can run into all styles this is why MMA is now more effective, but you must combine the right arts!

I just watched about 15 vids of Capoeira on Dailymotion.com The athleticism is unbelievable, and the moves are tight as hell. That requires some serious eye hand co-ordination, limberness, and you get a serious workout.

Great workout, yes. Functional in combat, NO.

True, I noticed that. But i did see a couple leg sweeps and takedowns. I'm thinking about finding a Capoeira school. But they are few and far between in Maryland.

If you want a helluva workout plus learning functional stand up and clinching skills just find a Muay Thai school instead.

100% right.
Also the reason why there very little hand movement was because the Art had to be taught for defense when your hands were bound tight (They were slaves after all)

I've thought about that, but I've always been intrigued by Capoeira. The moves, and sway, and the rythm. Found two schools near me. One school offer BJJ and Muay Thai as well (Yamasaki Academy). I'm interested in maybe training Capoeira and incorporating BJJ in it as well. How this hybrid would work is a question
-
Carpoiera and BJJ wouldn't mix to well. ???
-
One might have to adapt and use BJJ grappling when one sweeps the opponents leg ???. I'm speculating now, but I'm going to ask and do research.

if you want to learn some technique to use in a real fight situation, forget capoeira....But if you want flexibility, athletic endurance, learn how to do some really incredible flying kicks and so on, and of course learn an incredible source of aerobical workout, capoeira its for you.

A new job, and a move ;)

Capoiera would still work against untrained fighters, and most street thugs are untrained (If they don't have the discipline to keep a job, or live there dreams, there most likely not gonna last in a gym) Some dealers etc.. know boxing, Kickboxing and MMA, but they usually don't walk around creating heat for them self's. So I'd say it might still work but You have to be aware it's not the end all. Also you need to know weapons, cowards like to use em a lot, even if they don't know how to.

It is cool as hell to watch but that's about it.

Not the case in Hawaii. Thugs, dealers, wannabe gangstas are always willing, and able to get into it. It is always better to walk away.
