Post by: watchagot on March 23, 2007, 10:30:05 AM
What a loss to bodybuilding, but mostly to the families of these guys who are dying young who were competitive bodybuilders. When you think of who has died recently it's alarming. Here's who I just that I can remember who passed away:MOHAMMED MOMO BENAZZIZA,

PAUL DEMAYO
CURTIS LEFLER
ANTHONY D'AREZZO
ERIC OTERO
DON YOUNGBLOOD
DERRICK WHITSETT
GREG DEFERRO
SCOTT KLINE

Rob sager, isn't that the gay dude. and how old was greg deferro?
I know Rob did some gay porn films-don't know much about him personally-actually, I never really knew he competed as a BB'er.
Sad, anyway-too young.

thats not a very long list

bodybuilding is still healthier than whatever lifestyle most americans have (being fat and watching tv 8 hours a day)
Title: Re: Bodybuilders who have died young
Post by: The_Punisher on March 23, 2007, 10:47:14 AM
either way, it's a false pretense that professional bodybuilding is healthy. shouldn't a bodybuilder be able to make it through his 80th birthday
Title: Re: Bodybuilders who have died young

no.

bodybuilding isnt about being healthy. its about being freaky and dying on stage of internal bleedings and cramps.

this is what the audience wants and pay tickets to see!

it's modern gladiators KILLING THEMSELVES.

lol....well, the Audience is screaming for Mass and more Mass, and guys are going to the extreme to please the crowd's thirst for more mass. Bodybuilders are the perfect models for strong health, or are they?

I think, Punisher, that is why I like the BB'ers of the 80's/early 90's so much-it wasn't So much mass, but really well proportioned bodies-Paris, Labrada, etc. To me they seemed a lot HEALTHIER...

Oh, dear, the word's out.  BBs are willing to pay a high price for their
extraordinary bodies.  Sounds fair to me.  Besides, some folks just aren't
interested in becoming old and wrinkly.  Imagine how cranky THEY'D be!!!

Forgot about MIKE MENTZER, a man who was an expert on training & bodybuilding. His training articles are still being printed in Ironman . What a huge loss. And then his brother RAY MENTZER died within days after Mike passed away.

In the new MUSCULAR DEVEOLPMENT issue, there is an excellent article called " CURSE OF THE 90'S " by John Romano all about the competitors of the 90's who have died, gotten sick, or have dropped out of bodybuilding. Great reading & informative about the state of the scene then & now, and the effects & tolls of competing .

He lists a lot of competitors who have died . Add to the list:

CHARLES DURR.

And those who got gravely ill or injured:

ORVILLE BURKE
DON LONG
MIKE MATARAZZO
MIKE FRANCOIS
DENNIS NEWMAN
FLEX WHEELER
JIM QUINN

And the 90's had better physiques than today's mass monsters.

Here is something cryptic for you: the only pro bodybuilder over 50 who competed in the Mr. Olympia since the advent of the chemical era who is still alive today is Lou Ferrigno.  :-\

Not quite.   Ferrigno’s last Olympia was in 1993.  Using that year as a cutoff, we have:

Ron Love                     (55)
Samir Bannout              (51)
Vince Taylor                  (50)

If we push that back to 1990, we can add

Francis Benfatto   (50 in June)
Robby Robinson   (60)
Albert Beckles       (68)
Mike Christian       (51)

Most of the other O. competitors from 1990 forward, dead or alive, were born after 1957.

You are right about Ron and Samir and I actually totally forgot about Samir.  I wasn't sure whether or not to include Ron since the majority of his career was before Dorian's reign - same goes for Samir.  But to be fair, they should be included in that list.

I think around 1993 is a good time to call it "the chemical era".  1991-1994, somewhere in there, is when bodybuilding changed.  We will know at any time starting about now and over the next 10 years, what the result is of all the drug use of that era of bodybuilding.

oh, they were 'brought up' alright, but it wasn't permitted in evidence. ;)

the defence gave it a shot (pardon the pun), but the judge shot it down at voire dire.

for a decade we've heard "you're about to see a slew of guys keeling over thanks to the latest drug craze" but it never really happens.

We're going to have ten years of retired pros with hige heads, hands, and elbows.

Other than that, modern medicine is a wonderful thing and most guys will stick around into theirs 60s with ease.
