They should bring back weight classes!
-
OK... after seeing Sergio's pic, not only should he have won '72 Mr. Olympia, but '70 Mr. World too! :o
-
Great pics... Even though today's folks might complain they lack "conditioning," I still like the on-stage look of the older generation...

They should bring back weight classes!
Do you mean height classes?
-
Columbu looks much smaller and less defined, Arnold & Sergio about the same as later but smoother.
-
Great thread!

They were clearly setting Sergio up to lose to Arnold in the Olympia.
When Arnold's not ripped, there's no way he should come close to beating Sergio.
-
I read the title of the thread and opened it. Then I read the first post and was going to berate you for posting no pics but I stand corrected. Great pics... a few I haven't seen before

I remember seeing the contest, the only difference I noticed was when Arnold hit the most muscular, he had more separation in his upper chest than Sergio. That seemed to be the difference. Dennis Tinnerino expected to be called out for third and couldn't believe Draper beat him. Those where the days, bodybuilding was hidden from the public for the most part.
-
Arnold & Sergio... Sorry for quality :'(
-
:)
-
Oliva..
-
I think Arnold's best beats Sergio's best.
-
I think Arnold's best beats Sergio's best.
I'm on the other side of the fence... I think the Myth's best completely trumps Arnold's best.
Weider said it himself... Put Sergio on the cover it sells X copies... put Arnold on the cover it sells 3 times more.

No man that is an awesome pic. You can see that Arnold had more definition.

I disagree. What it shows is that Arnold's a better BB. He LOOKS like he has better definition because he's tensing ALL the right muscles whereas Sergio's legs are untensed (appearing softer) as are his lats, arms. Arnold's simply a smarter competitor.

Arnold realized that he was under the microscope the entire time he was on stage... Sergio would relax and wait for Judges to present the next requirement. I personally thought the Myth looked better, but when you factor in the entire time on stage, well... Arnold knew what he had to do.

Yes that is true!

Nice speculation & revisionist history after the fact; very easy with hindsight to manufacture reasons. Neither BB was in great condition. It is interesting that in contests held around the same time it was white BBs Schwarzenegger & Pearl who were the winners & in each case would sell more mags.

It's not revisionist history. LOOK at the picture of them side by side and it fits exactly with what I stated.
I'm not arguing that Weider didn't want/help Arnold win - on that I have no idea BUT you need to understand BB history better. At the time Sergio came into pro BB, the IFBB was the most honest and least racist BB organization out there. It's why he joined! Sergio had been in the AAU and there were lot's of claims of racism over there so Sergio was invited to join the IFBB and quickly became Mr. Olympia.
