Hmmm....

16 ounces in a pound
28 grams in an ounce
16 x28 = 448 grams
9 calories for a gram of fat
9x 448 = 4032

I don't get it? ???

That's because 1lb of body fat is about 90% fat and 10% water.

9 Times 454= 4086

A lb of fat is a lb of fat.

A lb of fat with water is a lb of fat with water.

You wanted to know how many calories in a lb of fat.  4086 is your final answer.

4086 is and this is not cannot be debated or disputed.

Fat cells, like all other cells in the body, include structural proteins and water. They're not 100% fatty acids, which is what you seem to be basing your overly-simplistic (as usual) argument on.

For purposes of calculating calorie deficits for weight loss, bodyfat has 3500 calories period.

Hope this helps.  ::)

Calories to Lose a Pound of Body Fat

By WLR Dietitian
Juliette Kellow BSc RD
Here comes the slimming science bit…
To shift 1lb of body fat, you need to ‘lose’ 3,500 calories. That might sound a lot, but over a week, it amounts to just 500 calories a day – and that can easily be done by making a few little changes to your diet, being a bit more active, or best of all, doing both. For example, cutting 500 calories in a day is as simple as swapping a bowl of creamy chicken soup for vegetable soup, topping your jacket potato with cottage cheese rather than Cheddar cheese, switching a can of cola for the diet version and doing 50 minutes of housework! Make little changes like this every day and in a week you’ll lose 1lb – without having to starve yourself or fill up on an unpleasant milkshake in place of a meal or banning all your favourite foods! And if you want to lose 2lb a week, you simply need to double your calorie saving and ‘lose’ 7,000 calories in a week or 1,000 calories a day!

Understanding the ‘maths’ is crucial to slimming but it’s also essential to set realistic goals, both in terms of the total amount of weight you want to lose – and how long it will take you. So if your list of resolutions includes aims such as losing a stone in a couple of weeks or wearing a size-8 dress in the spring when you have 6 stone to shift, it’s time to cross them out and get real!

Q. In books on nutrition, I'm told that to lose one pound of fat it's necessary either to reduce my food intake by 3500 calories or to exercise so that 3500 calories are burned. How is the value of 3500 determined? If fat contains 9 calories per gram, and there are 454 grams in a pound, then there should be 4086 calories in a pound of fat-- not 3500.

A. The nutrition books are correct-- 3500 calories per pound of fat is not an absolute amount, but it's very close. However, your math is correct, too. Here is the story.

When we burn fat, or other nutrients, heat is produced, which is measured in calories. As you note, each gram of fat generates 9 calories, and 454 grams equals one pound. But a pound of fat is not all fat. It's about 10% water. All of our body tissues--fat, muscle, bone, skin--contain some water. And water has zero calories.

In addition, not all the nutrients we eat are completely absorbed from the digestive tract to meet metabolic needs. In the case of fat, roughly 5% is eliminated in the feces. This 10% water content and 5% non-absorbed fat accounts for the 15% difference between your calculated 4086 calories and the actual 3500 calories in a pound of fat.
Two other minor points: The calories can be reduced when the meal is high in fiber. Fiber speeds the movement of food through the digestive system, there is less time for the nutrients to be absorbed before they are eliminated. So the non-absorbed fat could be a bit higher. Also, the amount of heat generated from fat differs a little for various foods (depending on fatty acid content). For example, there are 9.50 calories in one gram of meat compared with 9.30 calories for vegetables and fruits and 9.25 calories for dairy products.

Q. How many calories in a pound of fat?
From Shereen Jegtvig,

1) How many calories are there in one pound of fat?
2) Is it possible to tap into the fat on one's body as a source of energy?

A. A pound of fat stored on your body is equal to about 3500 calories. Whenever you take in more calories than your body needs for energy each day, then you will store the extra calories as fat.
It is possible to tap into the fat as an energy source. If you eat fewer calories than you need on any day, your body will convert some of the stored fat to glucose to use as fuel. When you decrease your daily caloric intake or increase the number of calories you burn by increasing physical exercise, you will lose some of the extra stored fat.

4095 Calories in a pound of pure fat... like a pound of lard.

a gram of fat is about 9 Calories.
In a pound (16 oz) there are about 455 grams.
9 Calories x 455 = 4095 Calories

Some sources use 4086 since they assume 454 grams in a pound.

If you're referring to a pound of fat in the human body, the number is 3500 lbs since it's not all fat. There's 10% water in a pound you want to lose from the body.

It is not like it really matters anyway. People get too scientific and look for things that aren't going to happen in bodybuilding. Just eat less and lift harder and you will lose weight.

you're not reading, numb nuts. yes, one pound of "pure fat" contains 4086 calories, unfortunately this is a mathematical conclusion not one found in practice. there's no way to get a "pound of fat" that is waterless. whether the pound of fat is a pound of lard on a plate or a pound of fat in your body is irrelevant, a fatty mass weighing one pound will have 10% water. a pound of fat pulled out of my ass would have 3500 calories in it. period.

you can't "math" your way out of reality.

irrelevant. it's the same in both situations. it's not like animals create fat in a different way. sure if it were possible to create a situation where a pound of fat all massed together completely devoid of water we might have something but that NEVER HAPPENS. just like you'll never get a pound of pure carbohydrates or protein. i have a thing of dextrose here, it's 80g per serving, but 75g of actual dextrose. even "pure fat" isn't "pure fat" in the same way.

Squadfathers revelation will benefit him in time. I have a theory that before any major change in a physique is to take place it must be preceeded by a meltdown. I go through several major meltdowns through out the year and a great change always follows. It is a good way to make a change. Squad father will get in shape mark my words. You must break down the mind before change is to take place and strip it of confidence.
