Recently on the news I head about tom cruise going to NY to offer free detex sessions to the 911 people. So I wondered what the detox involved. It turns out it involves 3-5 hours a day in a sauna, and taking Niacin. Tom Cruise is not a fat fuck by any means, for a 40+ guy he stays pretty cut. So I got thinking that maybe he is on to something. Either that or he is doing something else, and or has good genes.
The other day after working out I spent some time in the sauna, sweat like crazy. Felt all jacked up afterwards too ( drunk, lightheaded feeling ). The next morning, I noticed I looked dramaticlly more tone. So I got thinking is it possible to shred all my fat in this fashion? So I googled up sauna burning calories, and found lots of articles that both support and do not support the concept.
These are just a few of the things I read on the concept
You can burn up to 1000 calories by sitting in a sauna for 30 minutes
sitting in a sauna for one session is equal to a 10Km run
Forever I thought that the sauna only rid you of water weight. But the more I thought about it, the more I started to believe it could be possible. Your body doesn't magically loose weight. What comes in must come out. Food goes in via the mouth, or by IV. It then comes out by either Poop, Pee, Breath, Sweat. So I am going to try an experiment. Each night I am going to spend 30 minutes in the sauna at my gym. I will log my results, and take a picture each morning, plus weight myself to record my progress. I will also record what I eat, drink and when. I will post my results for you all to see.
If anyone has any feedback on this both positive or negative let me know.

Interesting - let us know how it works. Wet or dry?
I suppose dehydration could be an issue.
Right now all I keep thinking about is that I Love Lucy episode with her in the sauna trying to drop some pounds to fit into some dress ::)
-
Feels good, I like how it tightens the skin and makes it smooth. For every liter of sweat you realse 600 kcalories, so yeah I guess you are increasing thermogenesis by sitting in a sauna.
-
I am two days into my expriment ( actually three days but I have only been loggin stats for the past two ). I am definately seeing results. I will post my results thus far after a few days. I am using an Impedence scale to take measurements. I should probably take physical measurments as well, as I know these kinds of scales aren't very accurate. I will keep you all posted on my progress.
-
Should be interesting. Try to:
-Do this for a while. The longer the more accurate IMO.
-Record info for days after stopping, see what happens.
-
Thanks I will be sure to do so
-
I am just going to post in this thread so I get the updates in case I forget to look for it! ;D
great idea!

For every liter of sweat you realse 600 kcalories,
how was that measured?
sweating dosnt increase your heart rate in a stationary environment

It's bullshit.
I know many people using a sauna regulary that are fat as hell. 30mins burn 1000cals? Never.
You lose water weight, that's all. If you hold a lot of water, you might "look" fat, but actually aren't, but the sauna doesn't burn off fat.

Sure you know people who use a sauna, but they eat crap, and are not doing it everyday for over an hour. I am eating clean, and trying a sauna to see if I can shed the fat. Your skin is like a third kidney, that never gets used unless you sweat. Thus far the results have been great. My skin is softer, tighter, and I feel healthier too.

Yes, but you won't lose fat.

Interesting. Definitely a lot of myth surrounding this one. I'm interested in what you'll find out!
My father recently purchased a "Far Infrared" Sauna. Works a bit differently than conventional saunas apparently. When he told me one of the reasons he purchased it was for 'weight loss', I responded in a similar fashion like DonkeyKong. Checkout the following link, or if you Google Far Infrared Sauna's... you will find they claim to be better than conventional Sauna's, and more so for 'Fat loss'
http://www.infraredsauna.net/articles.html#Loss (http://www.infraredsauna.net/articles.html#Loss)
I noticed @ my sister's wedding a few weekends ago his skin looked very smooth & healthy. I've quizzed him on MSN Messenger how it's been working for him & his wife:
brad says:
How's the Far Infrared sauna working out for you guys?
Jack says:
Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfecto
brad says:
attributing any weight loss to it?
Jack says:
Na
Lot's of sweat though
brad says:
Hah
Jack says:
Great feeling after a shower
brad says:
You dieting in a caloric deficit where it'd actually enable you to lose the lbs?
Jack says:
Yes
Can only take his 'word' for the diet question ... but he has been successful over the past few years in dieting through monitoring food in-take & some exercise. So I assume he is honest in dieting in a caloric deficit whilst using the Sauna.
I believe he's had it for a few months now. I'm still curious to see how it works for you darksol ... if anything, your skin will be better looking!
-
I will keep you posted. I have read about those infrared saunas, and I am not sold on them. I think convection is the way to go.
-
its just absurd
youre wasting your time
-
the only thing the sauna is good for is exploring your tendencies and throwing your Na/K pump off. :-X :-\
-
Actually since starting my experiment I am seeing more definition in my forearms and shoulders. I am also sleeping better at night too. My goal is not to get huge, but to cut the fat, and my waistline. Thus far it seems to be working, even though the results don't come overnight.
-
Are you dieting....doing cardio...using any kind of thermogenics?
-
LOL @ this idiot.
he has this big test planned out so well that he didnt even think to take physical measurements until 3 days in, even though decreasing his waistline was one of the main goals. because you wont see results over night, but you will 2 days in. haha. nonsense <---- this post

sitting in the sauna is very difficult for the body, your body defenitely needs more energy then usual, so it burns calories. no doubt about it. so i dont see the conspiracy, you aint gonna burn 1000 callories in half an hour. but you will burn 136 cals per 30 min, thats my quess.

Here is a copy/paste I just found about this:
Dry Saunas Have Many Therapeutic Benefits
Both saunas and steam rooms can be used to relax and unwind. However, dry saunas have an advantage over steam rooms by helping to rid the body of more toxic metals picked up from the environment. Of course, the kidneys take out many of these toxins but a daily sweat can help reduce the body’s accumulation of lead, mercury and nickel in addition to cadmium, sodium, sulfuric acid and cholesterol.
The sauna is also more beneficial than the steam room if weight loss is desired because the energy expenditure. Compared to the steam room, the sauna places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories, thus assists in fat loss. Therefore, the heart needs to work harder to send more blood to the capillaries under the skin. The energy required for that process is derived from the conversion of fat and carbohydrates to calories,
In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a two-to-three-mile jog or an hour of moderate weight training.
People can lose up to a quart of water during a 20 minute sauna. Without replacement, such a high water loss can lead to disruption of normal heart rhythms and cause fatigue and nausea. Therefore, drinking fresh juice or water before, during and after the sauna is highly recommended.
Sweating by overheating the body in a dry sauna also produces the following effects:
* Speeds up metabolic processes of vital organs and inhabits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. The vital organs and glands (including endocrine and sex glands) are stimulated to increased activity.
* Creates a fever reaction that kills potentially dangerous viruses/bacteria and increase the number of leukocytes in the blood, thereby strengthening the immune system.
* Places demands upon the cardiovascular system, making the heart pump harder and producing a drop in diastolic blood pressure.
* Stimulates vasodilation of peripheral vessels, which relieves pain and speeds healing of sprains, strains, bursitis, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis and muscle pain.
* Promotes relaxation, thereby lending a feeling of well-being.

that should shut them up

Ok I have come to the conclusion that sauna alone won't bring results. Keep in mind I was trying to achieve results through use of a sauna and nothing else, ( no cardio ), while maintaining a clean diet. I was using the Suana for over an hour each day. The benefits were it was relaxing, and my skin got very soft. However this was not my goal. Lesson learned, Painful cardio works, Sauna does not.

haha, some people always learn the hard way. Theory shows you that it is impossible to use sauna for fatloss.
Welcome to the treadmill again, my friend. ;)

man the ignorance in this thread is strong ahah.
please someone read some pubmed articles on infared saunas or saunas and athletic performence.
it aids fatloss, and also has hormonal effects such as elevating gh,test etc...
i can post some of the articles if you guys want. but essentially what tweeter is saying is more then correct.

I pose for 15min after training in season but thats just me a little less water and better conditioning but the fat loss Im not sure about
