<< I keep hearing from US politicians and the US mass media that the "situation is improving" in Iraq. The profound sorrow and alarm produced in the American public by the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech should give us a baseline for what the Iraqis are actually living through. They have two Virginia Tech-style attacks every single day. Virginia Tech will be gone from the headlines and the air waves by next week this time in the US, though the families of the victims will grieve for a lifetime. But next Tuesday I will come out here and report to you that 64 Iraqis have been killed in political violence. And those will mainly be the ones killed by bombs and mortars. They are only 13% of the total; most Iraqis killed violently, perhaps 500 a day throughout the country if you count criminal and tribal violence, are just shot down. Shot down, like the college students and professors at Blacksburg. We Americans can so easily, with a shudder, imagine the college student trying to barricade himself behind a door against the armed madman without. But can we put ourselves in the place of Iraqi students? >>

A Red Cross report titled "Civilians without Protection: The Ever-Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq" was prepared after the American military surge in Baghdad began on Feb. 14. The assessment described conditions in Iraq, where a third of the population lives in poverty, unemployment is skyrocketing and food shortages are increasing.
Britain's Mirror reported, "Water, sewage and electricity systems are close to collapse. ... There is a critical lack of medical care as doctors and nurses do not dare to visit hospitals and clinics because they are targeted and threatened." More than half the doctors have fled the country following the murder or abduction of colleagues.
The Red Cross report concluded the people in "liberated" Iraq are caught in desperation. "Their lives and dignity are continuously under threat. The humanitarian situation is steadily worsening and affecting all Iraqis," the report stated. ...
Kraehenbuehl told the Associated Press how one of his Red Cross colleagues polled several Iraqi women, asking them what "their most pressing need was."
After a long silence, one of the women answered with a request that ought to be repeated to every member of Congress and included in every statement they make about Iraq: "The most important thing that anyone could do is to help collect the bodies that line the streets in front of our homes every morning. No one dares to touch them, but for us it is unbearable to have to expose our children to such images every day as we try to bring them to school."

The hurt doesn’t dissipate however when it’s in the middle of a war zone with trigger happy militias filled with hundreds of people like the guy at Virginia Tech. It hurts just as bad when you find out your father died trying to get to a food store in Baghdad as it does to find out your son or daughter has been killed trying to walk to class. Murder is murder, and the people left behind hurt as badly in Iraq as they do in the United States. Last night they picked up 45 bodies off of the streets of Baghdad. Maybe if you compare what happened at that college today to what happens everyday in Iraq you might just be able to grasp the pain and the suffering we have brought to that sad and isolated nation. A nation that is disintegrating from within because we have taken away the very structure of their lives and left in it’s place empty promises. >>

Just curious before we "showed" up nobody was being killed and it was a land of milk and honey? No mass graves or killing due to religious or cultural intolerance... ::)

before we invaded the streets were safer. there were jobs. and the death rate was FAR lower.
Saddam sucked, sure. But less iraqis died in that country per year, this is a fact.

Hard to say since no way to know back then. Yes I understand thou in a oppressive dictator situation it was "safer" but the same can be said of Hitler and germany.

Its hard to argue this,,, since his mass killings were very neat..folks still had power etc....as long as u weren't a kurd or on his shit list u were ok. Now its all ied's and crap.

The problem I have is even if tommorow we all stepped out there is still going to be killing, its a shame that its better to have a ruthless dictator then a democracy.

I understand because there all hyped up but for the most part there not killing the US there killing themselves. There fighting for power in the vacum left behind. I understand we caused the vacumn but same could have happened in a coup or death. There is no unity or tollerance in that nation. If they were smart they would totally stop for the next year. No killing. We would change presidents and pull almost everybody out and then they could go buck wild.

They shouldn't be there. If a million iraqis want to kill each other, it's a tragedy, but something for the UN to fix. The US has shown it doesn't have the ability to create peace there, partially because of the resentment the iraqis harbor for us. You put in african and french and russian and chinese men, and perhaps they will settle down. "yeah, they suck, but at least those fooking americans are gone"

At this point I agree we should not be there, but would not matter who we put there the problem is them. Same as places in Africa people killing themselves in record numbers if were there they only stop to kill a few of us for awhile. Let the people who want to kill themselves do and stay the heck out of the way. There good at it they have been doing it since the dawn of time. Hell if we put 1/2 the budget we are spending on nothing into another resource we could forget the whole oil pumping worlds.

Damn str8, i shot 74 last weekend and life was sweet! When i got home i saw where some moron blew himself up killing 23 iraqi's and i thought to myself, 'those silly towelheads', then i hollered for my gf, we had great sex, fell asleep in each others arms and life was good. We both love our country. we both support the war. We both think liberals should have needles stuck in their eyeballs.

Quite possibly. i heard somewhere members of the military are not allowed to engage citizens who speak out against the war, ...but I could be wrong. :-\
