Anyone know who was responsible for introducing this abominable practice?

Good question, my guess is someone who was on the juice but lazy and thought how can I make muscles in time for the next contest in 3 days...hmmmmm.

IMO Manfred Horbell get the credit. Ya, i misspelled his name.
-
What, Manfred wasn't all muscle? ;D

I remember waay back when in a Flex magazine when they used to report on new things and there was a digital image of what a synthol bodybuilder would look like and the article went into what synthol was etc..

LOL Nice pull.

Big Poppa Pump! Scott Steiner!
No......his muscles are not soft and round which is common with synthol abuse. Gregg Valentino is a perfect example of this abuse. How he's still alive is beyond me.

No doubt. Death knocked on his door a few times!

nahhh...look at vids of him from the 80's, he had the same build then: huge upperbody with big ass arms he just wasn't as cut as he became once he assumed the role of "big poppa pump". I might be wrong but I think he did that cause he had to have his ankle fused so he couldn't do alot of the cool shit he used to do like the frankenstiener so he needed a new angle.

Also, big papa pump had that dry freaky look to him. You don't get that with synthol use. With synthol, you get more of that water balloon look with no veins or dryness. I still think Ernie Taylor was a blatent synthol user (look at his triceps) no matter what Dorian says. I would say that a good 80% of pro bbdr's use synthol. They use it smart which is why they are tougher to spot. You can tell who the abusers are.

WOW that explains why his lower body dropped off and he started working like a heel and "fought" vs flying around like before. Thanks I was always curious.

i remember when i first saw manfred and didn't know anything about synthol.
i wondered, when i saw the before pics (when he boxed or something) his arms in no way showed that kind of genetic potential (usually there's at least a hint).
he'd die in the arse in wsm events like placing the boulders on the pylons because his upper arms were just too big and got in the way.
still, the rest of his upper body (back, chest, forearms, delts) seemed fairly close in proportion (unlike, say, valentino ;D) so when i found out it was a big surprise.
flex wheeler had the best work though imo. i still wonder about those arms and delts. flex is the only person i've seen that's arms and delts look like fucking cannon balls but somehow real at the same time (they seem to flow very well with the rest of his physique, although occasionally make his pecs look underdeveloped). imo, at his best, his arms and delts are more impressive than dillet's or matarazzo's.

Maybe not the first guy to use synthol, but it's reported that he was one (if not THE) first to show signs of it onstage.

Synthol, Syntherol, Synthosizze, or PumpnPose first showed up in 1996.
Searching google's archive of usenet, these threads may be of interest: 1996 (http://groups.google.com/group/misc.fitness.weights/browse_thread/thread/e0ffa4948e21c6d3/3c01dc1165342305?lnk=st&q=synthol+group%3Amisc.fitness.*&rnum=182#3c01dc1165342305), 1997 (http://groups.google.com/group/misc.fitness.weights/browse_thread/thread/cbd89ff32d4c5de2/b7e5598b976c11d5?lnk=st&q=&rnum=3#b7e5598b976c11d5)
the oldest website I can find, via web.archive.org, is pumpnpose.com from April 2000. It says that it was developed by Chris Clark and is manufactured in Germany,
