Title: Virginia Tech:Extreme hypocrisy in the media
Post by: Hedgehog on April 23, 2007, 08:09:21 AM
After the Virginia Tech slaughter, NBC decided they should air the mass murderer's tapes.

But censor any "foul" language.

WTF?

They have no problem showing a man just before killing himself, and during the course of killing dozens of others, but they have a problem with his language?

Something's very fcuked up. (They even blurred his mouth, so deaf people wouldn't be offended).

I saw nothing wrong with it, maybe too soon, but it will help people identify warning signs of individuals who display those emotions in public...wake up call

Yeah.

If they show the clips.

They're going to edit them for "foul" language?

That's like showing pedophile instructional vids on prime time, as long as there is no nudity or "foul" language.

Fcuking moral hypocrites.

How about starting to worry about real problems instead if Janet Jackson shows a nipple on national TV or if someone says "shit" of FCUK on prime time tv?

Moral hypocrites got their priorities all wrong.

It's not the media, it's the law. Blame congress and asswipe conservative family values.  >:(

"The Law

What are the statutes and rules regarding the broadcast of obscene, indecent, and profane programming? Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 1464, prohibits the utterance of “any obscene, indecent or profane language by means of radio communication.” Consistent with a subsequent statute and court case, the Commission's rules prohibit the broadcast of indecent material during the period of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. FCC decisions also prohibit the broadcast of profane material between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Civil enforcement of these requirements rests with the FCC, and is an important part of the FCC's overall responsibilities. At the same time, the FCC must be mindful of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and Section 326 of the Communications Act, which prohibit the FCC from censoring program material, or interfering with broadcasters' free speech rights."

You're missing the point.

I object to the fact that NBC decided they could show the footage at all.

But that some words were necessary to cut out.

The foul language... beeping that, that's just censorship.

Shows the hypocrisy.

All or none.

maybe they should have released it on their website first, people would have the option to view it... self censorship.

Agreed - tell them it's on the website.  clean and uncensored language versions.  don't give the prick his 15 minutes then blur out 'shit' as you see a murderer mid-task spewing hatred.
