What are your thoughts on it? There is a local class that is not overly expensive that I was thinking of taking. What do you guys think?
-
It's not the original pankration used by the Greeks/Romans. It's a recent development based on what some guys thought they used. The original panraktion wasn't a style it was just a free for all. This class is unproven in actual fighting. Boxing would probably be better. Faster to pick up and learn. Great for developing speed. Karate is great if it's a hardcore dojo and you want to invest 4 years + of training.

I think you should check it out.
-
yeah check it out and see if its for you depends what youre looking for

The best move in old school pankerton, is grabing a finger then breaking it.

So now that I have more time and have searched what my school has to offer, Pankration and Tae Kwon Do are the only two forms of fighting I can take so would Pankration be good for Law enforcement or military service? I want to have some fightin experience and these are my choices. Thanks guys.

ill take pankration over tkd. still think you should check out both and see what the actual training is like, might depend on the teacher etc also the set up with bags etc can be different

What school do you go to? I don't understand why are you limited to these two only? Maybe I missed this?

I go to a college to be unnamed but it is lame as far as fighting instruction. I know a good class elsewhere that is out of my price range. They only have two as they axed Judo and akido. It mostly has the conventional club sports which blows. Too many frat guys wanting to play flag football I guess. I def want to do Pankration but don't if it will be as applicable as I need it to be.

well it's either that or tkd isnt it so there's really not much choice

Here is my question how old are you? Let me tell you if you are learning on campus and from some guy who comes to the campus to teach, more then likely he is a duesche bag. you do not want to learn TKD really in my opinion it's a pretty shitty art. There are good instructors out there but most are fucks with no clue. Mcdojo types. I learned from what I would say is one of the best in the U.S. but there not everywhere. TKD is pretty shitty as a whole because a lot of the instructors are idiots just looking to make a buck. Rexkwondo style. Don't waste your time if it's taught on campus. Check out one class to make sure your not passing a diamond in the rough up, but it will prolly be a waste of time IMHO.

Matt Hume's Pankration > Jim Arvantis Pankration.

Guy's got an extremely slick game. Good standup, good clinch and submissions from all sorts of positions. His fight with Paulson was a classic. Two technicians, pure magic. Also very strong for someone with light musculature (by bodybuilder's standards).

Yeah, I always thought he had more of a bicyclists build than a fighters.

The name Paulson is familiar. Where does he train?

I thinks he runs a school in Cali, but he's a pretty sought after trainer (submission specialist), he just fought this last weekend in Dallas at the HDnet fights. I know he's a well rounded submission specialist, but his leg locks are pretty sick.

Paulson was a former Shooto lightheavyweight champ in the early eighties. Trained with Nori in shootboxing, prior, won the Pan Ams in BJJ in 1996. Very slick ground game. Trains a lot of top fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Hendo has been down to CSW. Greg Nelson is a student of his (Sherk's trainer).
