Bob Paris, had one the most balanced and asthetic physiques in the history of bodybuilding. Yes the man is openly gay-e , so what ??? At least he isn't a hypocrite. I enjoyed his book ; "Gorilla Suit" which is an very interesting and well written story on his life in bodybuilding.
It's the 21 st century and I could care less about someones sexuality. Just because I am straight and like woman does not make me any better or worse than a homosexual.

I still maintain that part of the reason everyone considers Bob so aesthetic is due to his looks. I think the same is true of Frank Zane too. I'm not saying these two bodybuilders did not have great aesthetic physiques, I'm just saying that lots of others do too who did not get as much credit. I will openly say part of the reason I admire them is for their looks. It completes the package in my opinion.

While I agree with you that Bob got such a big push because he looked like a male model w/ a bbers physique, but, for the life of me, I can't come up with a another bodybuilder with that type of aesthetics.
Would anyone sans a few muscleheads rather have Jay's physique over Bob's?

Very good bodybuilder, one of the best ever.
And without a doubt the classiest guy ever.
Seems funny with Paris being a fag and all, but if he would've won the Olympia, my guess is that we would have less of the gay4pay, and more of just straight up good physiques, with a mainstream appeal.
Guys like Bob Paris, Lee Labrada, Milos Sarcev (before the synthol), Shawn Ray, Benfatto, Cicherillo et al.
You could throw in almost anyone pre-90 in there. Of course Danny Padilla and Tom Platz.
They all represented a less gay kind of bodybuilding.
Less gay than guys like Tom "Colt" Princess, Scott Klein, Bruce Patterson, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Markus Rühl... The freaky mass monsters sporting their minithongs that gets teh love from their fan base, the gay schmoes.
Oh brother...
I'm hoping for Phil Heath, Rocco Jones and Sami Al-Haddad.

Hedge, while I kinda understand your point, you aren't being fair to Jay or Ronnie. Neither one of them has done anything remotely like "gay for pay", same with Markus I suppose. Why blame them for something even when they had nothing to do with it?
Second, why do you think the "gay schmoes" only go after "freaky mass monsters"? Are you saying that no gay schmoes are interested in a Heath-type physique, or in the past none of them was interested in Paris/Labrada/Bob/etc?

Classic old school physiques like Labrada, Paris and Benfatto are more mainstream, and have big appeal with females.
While I don't think neither Coleman or Cutler are doing g4p, I must question why they choose to guest pose in minimal competition thongs. That's beyond gay. Lately, I think Cutler have started to guest pose in boxer briefs, and that's refreshing.
When not competing, I would guess that bodybuilder can choose whatever trunks they want. And thus, whenever I see a guest poser sporting those thongs, it makes me wonder WTF?
I'm sure gays are interested in the Heath-type of physique as well.
But my point is really that few or no women are fans of the Mass Monsters, ie a big percentage of the Mass Monster Fan Base are m'phags.

I have no idea whether your opinion is true or not, but I don't see why gays would go for mass monsters while chicks go for the smaller prettyboys. I thought the mass monsters' fanbase was essentially the hardcore "aint nuthin but a peanut" "no pain no gain" bodybuilding fans.

Seriously though, I was of same opinion as you for a long time. But ask yourself why there are so few women at bodybuilding contests?
And from what I understand, the numbers have been dropping over the years?
Whenever you show a picture from a bodybuilding mag to a regular girl, the typical response is disgust.
But they will almost always think old pics of Arnold, from Conan and alike, to be freaky in good way.
Would a gay be disgusted by pics of Markus Rühl or Jay Cutler?
I dunno, but I doubt it. There was a youtube clip posted here with Bruce Patterson lifting two small guys in a session. That kinda opened my eyes to what's up. A real eye-opener. :-[

I disagree. The straight guys seem to have the mass at any cost mentality. Some gays may have that point of view too, but others are more into symmetry and proportionality.
Personally I don't care for today's pro's physiques at all, or even most of the top amateurs. Too massive and too dry. I like the physiques of the late 70s and early 80s: lots of steroids, but no GH or insulin. No grainy skin.

That much is true too. Bob Paris could not have grown any bigger than he did on anabolics alone. He was 6'0 and around 225-230 at his biggest in contest and was not getting any bigger...not without GH and the like at least.

The other straws being merely the fact I was not an ironager. Had I been an ironager, I could have gotten away with everything "bad" that I did on that board. I was only ostracized because I was my own man and not an ironager and not willing to alter my speech on that board in order to accommodate their preferences. To me, the most important attribute I expect from others is respect. I don't care what anyone's opinion is, providing they respect me. However, ironage members seemed to want to live in their own world where they don't have to realize that opinions exist other than their own - having someone like me who disagreed with them coexisting alongside them put them well away from their comfort zone and made them insecure - at least the ones who had a problem with me. To be fair, I do not know if ironage is still like this.
I also won't debate with an open mind how my behaviour may have somehow been inappropriate - in life I get along with virtually EVERYONE I come in contact with. Virtually everyone who knows me has great respect for me. Honestly, if anyone has a problem with me, it is their problem not mine. It may sound arrogant to say, but I literally get along with EVERYONE virtually all of the time. Maybe five times a year (if that) will I get into ANY type of disagreement with anyone over anything. I in no way blame myself for getting banned from their board - that being said, their house, their rules. And while the rules there may have been totally unreasonable, they are nonetheless allowed to set them as they wish.

I belive you and Matt are 100% on the money here. A lot of the hardcore guys seem to have the ideal as the mass freak. While it is a lot easier to judge sheer raw mass, it is not the end all be all of a great physique. I frankly think some of the hardcore advocates want the "image" of a bodybuilding to look real rough and tough without looking the least bit artistic due homophobia.
