First of all, Im speaking of the hardcore "weights only" Golds on pacific ave.
not the aerobics, daisy duke, fag place that is.......
robinson, mentzer, zane, arnold, corney, viator, banout, grant.....etc. They have all talked of having the doors open and the sea air rushing in while working out....You can re-live this.
I propose all bb websites to set up a donation to save our home......If around the world $20 dollars each was sent in to restore the building to its original state, we could find building contractors like my self to participate in this re-on struction....for free.
Im sure enough could be raised to buy the building and have joe golds equipment moved in.
All the old pics of grymkowski, padilla and all.......could be on the wall of the same spot your standing in......I would donate alot of old muscle builder power mags to replicate the gym.
Now because of the size of the building, it would be "weights only" and if advertised right, people would plan on coming around the world, we could set reservations for workouts...but walk-thrus anytime. For instance if i know ill be in venice on 8-18-07......i would call to get a spot reserved for 2-3pm.
This would allow about 20 people an hour or so, to come and go. The current stars could be there at set times to sell picture and autographs.....$$$$MOney..
The weakness in this plan is, I dont know how to handle the donation raised....could we set up a NON - Profit org...... or something. Could we propose to get a grant from the city for historical reasons...like muscle beach??
Those of you in the finace world could get that part of it done.
This is possible guys!!! Lets find a way, before its too late.

I'll do what I can mate. You need to gimme a week and I'll get back to you with something concrete 8)
In return, you will have to say how the SQUAD is superior to 'tiny' tits like you and how we've made you cry like a little girl in the past with our vicious ownings ;D

it's a private residence, not for sale, and worth around $2 million.

It would be for sale with the right money......2 million could be raised over time, easy...were talking world wide.
Shawn perine PM'd me and said he had a connection to the owner and it was stated that the right money is fien but he wouldnt want to do any work re-converting....we could donate to get this done.

Hey, I was being serious about the first statement 8)

Everyone has a price!
Exactly. If all bb websites were set up with this notice...we could easily raise the money at $20 dollars each......Then i would pay to have a workout there easily $20 dollars in tha same spot as the champs.

I would love to work on this with you kiwi......It could even be a money maker with the current stars setting up definite times to sell their goods.
Say Markus Ruhl is set for 5-12-07......ruhl fans from the U.S. couls be there for him.....and on and on it goes.......each star and fan base ready to go.....
People usually plan vacations far out anyway. Im on to something and may start looking for investors if people dont see the opportunity.....
THE SQUAD MADE ME CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

OK, now that the important part has been done, we'll go to the next step :D.
Mate, just gimme a week. I am not promising anything, but I'll look into it and I'll definitely get back to you.
Didn't think you'd admit the other thing so shamelessly and without the slightest bit of hesitation - a man after my own heart ;D

LOL. Im on to something and may take a trip ther very soon...its a short trip.
The investor idea might be better......profits i could see for them.
I could be in charge of the reconstruction and mange the gym too possibly
To everyone that thinks that because its a residence...it cant happen.........Your wrong...everyone has a number......so that s a small detail to a builder like moi ;D

$2,000,000 for the building
let's say you raise $400,000 for a down payment, and what ever is needed for refurbishment.
you finance $1.6 million for 30 years, that's about $10,000 a month
property tax in Los Angeles County is 1% of the sale price, or $20,000 a year or $1,666 a month
water, gas, electric, $500 a month (probably a bit low)
you need someone at the front desk for 12 to 18 hours a day. Need to hire a janitor. $14k a month payroll.
total monthly cost $26k
20 paying customers an hour, 18 hours a day, you'll have to charge $72 an hour
you pay for the building outright, you'll still have to charge $42 an hour
the gym was moved for a reason. the building is way too small
oh, and there is no parking on Pacific, so you'll have to rent a nearby lot.

No financing involved. could be interest only on loan for 30 yrs, property as collateral.
Payroll is not that high. 1-2 people at desk...janitor included. I could manage and setup the champs for signing deals and dates.
We could set it up to open on friday-sunday to lower costs......
We could get a shuttle bus donated for this to transport for parking.
Im a do-er...can you tell?? ;D
This doesnt have to be setup as a for profit corp.............it doesnt have to make money above expenses....but it will!!! ;D
-
Reservations for the year would be setup on a website designed and maintained by a local "Getbigger" this would of course be world wide.
This would eliminate alot of phone calling...
-

that is still financing. interest only loan on $1.6 million at 6% is $8k a month
Payroll is not that high. 1-2 people at desk...janitor included.
yes it is. this is Los Angeles.
I could manage and setup the champs for signing deals and dates.
what champ is going to show up for 20 or even 40 people? especially when maybe 5 will actually pay for an autograph.
We could set it up to open on friday-sunday to lower costs......
cost of the building and property tax is the same. but now you have less money coming in
We could get a shuttle bus donated for this to transport for parking.
now you have the cost of mainaining a bus, and salary for a bus driver. but even so, the city still requires you to provide parking spaces, even if they're miles away. you still have to rent a lot.

PWNED. ;D

You are the "wind" beneath my wings...........

I love the enthusiasm here. This is the kind of spirit that makes things happen. I don't know if the current tenant would even be willing to sell. I remember pricing the building about 4 years ago, when it was last on the market, for $1.5 mil. So with renos it's easily worth 2 right now. But if the guy who bought it can afford $1.5 he may have the money to not care if he was offered double that. It's sweet R.E. for a home- literally a block from the beach. Really, so much depends on what he feels is best for his family (he has a wife and young child).
I do think if you promoted the place the right way you could do a big tourist business. You would have to have a well stocked gift shop and a juice bar would be good too. There are a few public parking lots within blocks of the location and I'd bet you could work a deal with them- discounts for Gold's validation.
I'll see if I can speak with the owner of the building again. It's hit or miss whether I see him, but I will try.

I thought that Ballys was going out of business............

Would many people donate to this? I sure as fuck would not. Nice idea though.

Thats true. Most Ice Skaters would not donate.
-
If you could find a way to give everybody who donates something in return, like an engraving in the wall or god know what..but something that makes it worth wile for the once in Europe as well.
-
I ate to stop the dream here but this ain't going to happen becuase not that many people really give a shit

With all the talk of the original Golds, I thought all would enjoy this.
Larry McCusker ( of Muscle Mag International fame) created a virtual 3-D Golds Gym last year.
Ken Sprague (Oldgoldsguy at Ironage) filled in all the missing details.
Here's a short animation Larry did

Excellent post jeff. Thanks. Mattress on the roof for the homeless bb'rs.
Joe Gold was an angel... ;D

Not an overwhelming reason to buy it now, as it's held by someone interested in the history and is in no danger of being destroyed. Can alway be bought later.
-
I drive by the gym every morning, how about some people who have good credit off the board, and lil cash, lets all get together and open a new gym in venice, and make it like the old golds, where you had to be a bber, powerlifter, athlete, or over 200 lbs. to be able to train..............god if I had the money, with golds and world going to shit and basically becoming extinct, we need a new hardcore gym out here guys.

It will be very affordable, if the republicans win a presidency. foreclosures and A.R.M. loans coming due... :-[

This is a tempting thought.... 8)

If 20 bucks was all that it took to save the Mecca, tell me where to send my money.
But sadly, I doubt this will work.
That this is even happening is a sad sign of the times.

Guys nobody would like this to happen as much as me. And I have asked Pete numerous times about the building. The lady who owns it will not sell. No matter what even if she did the price would be so stupid who would invest in something that is 99% sure to never make money. That gym is small but back in the 60's and 70's it was fine. But nowadays, it is just to small, and it has NO parking. And, if you intend to turn it into a business I am pretty sure their are parking requirements that would need to be met. Here it is one spot for every 400 sq.ft. Unless it can be grandfather in, but I would find that hard since it has been a residence for so many years even though it has been vacant. There is so many other variables too. The only way this could ever be a reality is if Arnold stepped in. As Governor and super rich and powerful he is really the only guy who cold make this work. If you guys are serious, I would direct 100% of your effort to Arnold.

Agreed; Arnold or someone like Weider who wouldn't be interested. A group of investors that included Arnold and Stallone as with Planet Hollywood wouldn't appeal because of the limited returns relative to purchase price.
No hurry to get it, it's not changing any time soon. Can be bought later when ownership changes for whatever reason.
-
anyone want to come out to cali and invest their money in a new gym, i Will gladly work and manage the gym, and recruit the new members from golds and other gyms in the area.
-
Aim our efforts towards Arnold?...you mean the guy who's had his face removed from Gold's?...ok, fair enough that he switched to World after Joe sold, however...a big blank spot amongst the line up of Mr O's?...
The most revered Mr Olympia of all time, and his photo is NOT in Gold's???
I think Arnold, while he may have a bit of nostalgia in him for the past, is more worried about politics nowadays...and that's probably a good thing.
But hey, Arnie!..throw a crumb out and BRING BACK GOLD'S!!!!....
-
An end to the "Golden Era"? :(
-
what you guys dont understand is venice and marina del rey are filling up with several new circuit training gyms, and private training gyms..............a nice gym in marina called Angel city fitness closed a couple of years ago, now worlds, and now golds is the new starbucks of gyms............I bet if someone found the right building and put all new hammer strength equipment, and all the hardcore/bbing style of gym up, a ton of members would join................if you guys want to remain at a hardcore gym, black diamond on crenshaw still exists, where the likes of mike christian trained, ron love, and other black bbers. They have the dungeon downstairs full of antique equipment, but they closed it off now............its making me sick that the muscle beach pit is the only remnant left out here at the mecca............and the equipment contract at muscle beach expires soon, so its not a good feeling at all knowing us hardcore guys have nowhere to go train and feel the comraderie and the true inspiration and feeling of bbing history golds and muscle beach had............
-

There's no bigger BB fan than him, and it wouldn't take much time to have others try to work something out if interested. Plus he can afford to lose some money on it.
No particular reason to do it now though.

Nothing ever stays the same. Venice was a run down neighborhood where young people could live near the beach for little rent. Now that's all being replaced with multi-million dollar homes. You can't have a hard core gym without hard core bodybuilders. and hard core bodybuilders can no longer afford to live in Venice.
-
Maybe it's time for a new cluster of BBs and gyms somewhere else along the water.
-
You will need someone with some money and/or connections and a lot of passion for this sport...like maybe Milos ;D ;)
-
If it dosn't werk out will i get my 20 bux back?
-
Texasblubber has the most money on Getbig. He has admitted to making $9 million in 9 months. He can buy it
-
Call it's Joe Gold's Gym in memory of him, if you use just Gold's you would have to franchise it I think. But hey if it really ever happened I would go out there and help with the resoration.
