Title: Self defence
Post by: Lewis on June 06, 2007, 04:00:33 PM
Right well i feel im fairly strong and of quite good level of cardio fitness but have never been taught any kind of fighting.

Any recommendations for a self defence to take up? I have no intentions of becoming some mma cage fighter legend like every other guy at the moment.

What do you think would be the best all round?

Cheers.

if you want to practice self defense, just buy a gun and empty a few rounds into the other dudes chest. (doesn't matter how big or strong he is now...6 shots or so and he's a dead man!)  ;D better yet, just stab him in the chest! i know it's dirty fighting, but it works!

can tell it was all children replying to a serious question....

"bujinkan budo taijutsu" AKA "ninjutsu"....the grandmaster is Hatsumi Sensei

this is not a sport, you do not compete in the bujinkan, you do not win medals/trophies in the bujinkan.

"budo is simply the study of the best ways to kill" - Hatsumi Sensei

its basically a science on how the human body moves

Boxing is and always will be number one. All these MMA guys wouldn't last a round against any half-decent professional boxer. Or even a leading amateur. It's a different world.

ninjitsu, aikido, or jujitsu.

jujutsu is 1 of the 9 schools of the bujinkan

therefore jujutsu is only 1/9 of what the bujinkan is all about...its only a fraction

experience is the best defense!! until you put in a few bouts on the street, you have no defense or offense

This is going to spark some controversy, but it is my opinion.

I would only take up "live" self defense arts.  Arts practiced against a resisting opponent with as little rules as possible with the proper protective equpiment.  That being said, these are the most practical arts.

Boxing
Wrestling (I love greco as well as freestyle)
Judo
Jiujitsu (BJJ in particular)
Sambo
Muay Thai
Kickboxing
Kyosukin Karate
Kali
Col Jeff Coopers "Gun Fu"

All of these are practiced full contact, all of them have their particular range that they are good at.  Cardio and neuromuscular endurance aid in these activities as well as flexibility.  Size only matters if everything else is equal, then bigger is best.  Have fun, it is a lifelong journey.  And no one art has all the answers.
