Title: Any suggestions for a neighbor?
Post by: Princess L on June 11, 2007, 04:07:31 PM
A neighbor lady has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  I guess they've removed the mass and now she's going to be going thru chemo or radiation or both - not sure.  Either way, I'd like to do something ~ nothing major ~ just something helpful.  She's 50something, husband, kids (boys) moved away.  Any ideas?  Bring a dish over, fresh picked fruit (strawberries are in season), bake something, flowers... ???

Although we've been neighbors for many years, we don't really "know" them.  Very little socializing over the years, just mostly a wave here and there, small chit chat, etc.

Sorry to hear about that Princess L.

I think those are all good ideas.  You may want to wash and trim the strawberries so she won't have to do anything but add sugar or honey if she wants.

We've got an aquaintance who is dying of cancer and she is staying away from fats and protein for some reason.  They are getting a lot of casseroles so it was suggested I make them a salad.  I chopped/made several ingredients for a Southwest Chicken Salad and put everything in separate ziplock baggies so she could choose what she wanted or not on her salad.  Her husband eats everything so he probably dumped some of every baggie in his.

i think what Stella did is a good idea.  Add a card and it is a nice gesture.  i wouldnt get flowers, flowers can die quickly and well you know.

Like Toxi said, your time will be the best present.

But I'd also bring a small "care basket" fully of goodies to cheer her up a little.  Maybe some magazines of different types to keep her busy during the day if no one is home with her.

Let her know you are right there if she needs anything and give her your number.

Awww, you're a sweetheart Toxi.  Actually at 15 I was a overweight, wore really stupid looking glasses, had brown hair and to be 100%...didn't have my first date until I was 17 (and unfortunately he was a cheater).

They're very private people (her & her husband), so I want to be careful not to intrude.

Cancer huh...well when my grandfather got cancer, he went out and started buying what he called "Wacky Tobaccy"...you know...the "green" stuff...lol

In all honesty though, her energy level will suck so anything you can do to help would be appreciated I'm sure.

Follow-up:

She beat the breast cancer and things were going great.  Then in (late) '08 she was diagnosed with another type of cancer - a pre-leukemia-type cancer.  She had a very positive outlook and things seemed to be going well for her.  Saw her many times this summer & fall with really no mention of it.  She looked and acted healthy.  As a matter of fact, my husband spoke with her about 3 weeks ago.

I was just informed she is now in "at-home hospice".  :-\

Any suggestions?

I just attended a memorial for a fiend that just passed from cancer.  Once she was put in hospice she passed within 2 weeks.  not much you can do for her other than let her know that her significant other will be sorroounded with friends and family and will be supported.

Cancer is a bastard.

Princess, maybe ask someone who knows her or her family well and ask if flowers sent would be a good idea.  I don't know if it would or not.....but if so, have the arrangement be a modern one and not funeral homey at all.

I was just searching....look at these :D

awww...very cute.

I'm going over there today, probably empty handed (really) and just talk to her, offer to run errands or whatever for her husband.  We're out in the boonies - sorta - so nothing is a quick trip (except the corner bar(s)).  He probably doesn't want to leave the house for any length of time.

The pre-leukemia turned into full blown AML which both her parents and brother died from - wow!

Spent about an hour+ there.  Seems like she's accepted it - very upbeat, not in any pain, just very tired.  Quote:  "not a bad way to go".  Could be a "front".   I brought a couple of books over, but she was very blunt and honest, stating she has no interest in reading books because she can't stay focused or recall what she read.

I don't think her husband is going to fare well through this  :'(

Maybe flowers are a good idea  :-\  I didn't see one bouquet.

it's a rough thing.  I feel for me friend since he is alone now.  He lost both his dogs and his wife in the span of a year and a half.

This is when it's really rough - when "it's over" and all of the support is gone (in a sense).  Nights are probably the worst.  Spending your time with him is probably one of the best things you can do.

just talk to her

was what i wanted to say  ^^^

forget flowers, cakes, pics of getbeggers when they were young, nothing, she's had enough of that pathetic sympathy >just talk to her tell her she's very much loved,

or>>>better still:   listen to what she might need to say, make sure someone's there >?

I brought her a poinsettia about a week after the first visit, but didn't get to see her (sleeping).  Visited the following week, but again, didn't get to talk to her.  Took some chili and cookies over to her husband on the 22nd.  She passed away Christmas Eve.
