Although I love bodybuilding, it's just not the same anymore. In retrospect, after the 2004 Mr. Olympia, just merely competing at the event fulfilled much more than I ever hoped for.
So walking away was really no big deal to me. After all, I walked away with my health and lots of pride for what I had already accomplished and that means more to me than a potential first place award somewhere down the road. I don't and haven't been keeping up with the current events of the whole bodybuilding world due to my other passions and obligations.
But you have heard it from me. I have officially retired from competitive bodybuilding.
Sincerely,
Richard Jones

Great news.
I was always a big fan of Rocco's physique. He was never gonna win the Big one, with the kind of judging IFBB got right now.
Best news in a long while actually.
Best of luck to Rocco with his future career.

-
I guess he won't........
-
After all, I walked away with my health
This is a smart man

Million dollar smile, body and brains. :)
-
we will all spend the rest of our lives training to attain the kind of size and conditioning that Rich Jones, MBA will be carrying the rest of his life without ever needing to touch a weight.
Ain't life cruel like that? :)
-
GOOD LUCK RICHARD SMART MAN ......
-
He is too good to be true.
-
creepy thread
-
Even though he didnt place well when he competed at the 2004 olympia------------he had probably the most ripped back in the show-----------his christmas tree was ridiculous!!
Met him at the 2005 olympia expo----------defintly one of the friendlier pros there--------Good guy and a class act.
Good luck Richard-------------

This is a smart man
Very smart. Good for you, Richard, for going to school to better yourself. Something a "sport" called bodybuilding can't do.
-
Who is Mike Jones?
-
Little sad to see him go as i quite like his physique, but good on ya mate and go and enjoy life :).
-
Is he still training though? he should just market himself on the side and forget about the competitive aspect as he has already done.

& Bob Paris? 8)
yes !
I plan to add more muscles all in the right place in the very near futur and look as close as possible to those perfect symmetrical physique 8)
Milos, RJ and Bob Paris ARE bodybuilding 8)
and Levrone and Dennis Newman of course who were massive yet still maintained their incredibly beautiful lines :o
-
I am doing this pose in my routine as an hommage to RJ (and Milos) 8)
Actually, RJ said he got that pose from watching Shawn Ray.
From a BB fan perspective it sucks that RJ won't be competing, but from his own perspective it's likely for the best.
As a tribute, anyone got that pic of his christmas tree back in the gym?
-

Maybe that'll get you a hookup with Bob Paris ;D

GOOD LUCK RICHARD SMART MAN ......
He is smart, with the type of physiques the IFBB is rewarding ie Jay Cutler and Ronnie.. There's no point.. The IFBB needs to be revamped..

Richard Jones had great potential to become a top athlete after he won the USAs in 2003, and then placed 3rd at the 2004 Night of Champions. But after a dismal 18th place later that year at the Olympia, that was it.
His choice. Changed careers, went back to the university to get a degree, much props to that, but he will be missed.
-
Good luck Rich. I had the pleasure of having him stop in my restaurant the evening before the night of champions. I was impressed with his kindness. He was definately the best-spoken pro i've ever had a conversation with.

Roddy Piper wrote in his book about "the sickness," where guys become addicted to the spotlight, and run their bodies into the ground chasing that last bit of glory. Props to Jones for avoiding "the sickness" and moving on.

Wow! :o
Good find!

Brutal Grace Jones look ;D
good fing though.. I wish they were still reports like that on ESPN...
seriously bro-------------I remember when I just started lifting and I was able to catch shit like this on ESPN------------as a kid it got me pumped to lift

The next few years is the perfect opportunity to change things - ronnie will soon be gone - jay has said hes only gonna do another couple yrs from what i have heard - they could take it back to where it was in the 90's, awarding aesthtics aswell as size - - but will they - i doubt it :-[. They will now be on the lookout for the next monster to crown Mr O
-
Amazing bodybuilder!!! Really liked the package he brought!
-
I loved the package he brought. Probably top 1-3 physiques I'd like to have.
On the BFTO 04' he at least showed some personality, contrary to most of the others.
This pisses me off. He came in at the wrong time.
Good luck Richard! You will be missed!

When an incredible physique like this walks away from the sport and states "HEALTH" as one of his reasons, we all need to think about the absurd drug use and freak standard.

Great move...smart man. Good Luck!!

He came in at the wrong time.
But ironically left at the right time.

Bodybuilding is really nothing more than lifting weights. It should be used to train for legitimate sports. It's as boring, as watching water boil.....
The public is confused when we just flex our muscles on stage...they quickly wonder "Whats the use of these muscles, can you use them for function?"???
All you kids out there, save yourself and use the weights as a tool to get somewhere worth getting to. (football, swimmimg, soccer, gymnastics...etc.

Today's professional bodybuilding is nothing but a freak show full of wackos and weirdos (with the exception of a few). There's not a lot of money to be made, and everybody sacrafices so much health. The few who refuse to trade health for success, get beat by drug-abusing mass monsters with pregnant stomachs. If i was RJ, i'd quit too.

I'm glad we all agree that bodybuilding sucks so bad..
I wonder why everybody wants to get big muscles..

I watched the superheros cartoons as akid. I didnt know you could actually look like that until i saw a bb in a mall.....it was amazing. I went home and asked my mom what do i do to get like that?? She bought me a plastic/cement weight set and off i went at 13yrs old.
I competed at 16 and took all the trophys in my first comp. I was hooked, but i wish someone had directed my energys into football or something......

Oh really Alex? This is news to me!!! First time I've ever heard about it. And if that were true, then how come I have a badge and a gun and drive a 'black & white' everyday??? Cook that one in your pipe!
Man, it's been a LONG time since I have visited/read Getbig! But if I can remember correctly, it doesn't seem to have changed much.
Anyway, to clear the air.....YES, I will NO longer be participating in competitive bodybuilding. And since Getbig seems to be the 'eye' of the storm when it comes to rumors, let me just tell you...I have NO health issues what-so-ever, NO injuries of any kind or whatever else can be generated from such an exit. I love and always will love bodybuilding. I will always train and eat right as long as I'm physically able to. But my life and priorities have taken shape for a different future.
Bodybuilding has given me a lot of opportunities that otherwise I would not have had. I started competing when I was 18 and it has instilled discipline, drive and the will to win. And because of that, I was awarded "pro status" in 2003. I could have walked away then and been satisfied with my accomplishments. I don't know how many times I have to reiterate this, but just merely competing in the 2004 solidified my career and exceeded my goals. Would I ever had been crowned "Mr. Olympia"??? No way! I knew that coming in. And I certainly wasn't going to kill myself trying to chase something that simply wasn't going to happen. I'm ok with that. VERY ok.
Since then, I have completed my MBA, I have a BEAUTIFUL girlfriend, an awesome dog, a fun and exciting job and a nice roof over my head. Most importantly, I am in excellent health! It's all good and only going to get better.
But thanks for all the support and compliments! The true fans is what I'll miss the most!
What's the saying around here? "Hope this helps"!!
P.S. I don't read the boards and I don't plan on doing so or responding after this. So just consider it my final farewell.
Sincerely,
Richard Jones

Richard your physique is what bodybuilding is all about. No matter your current ventures you will always be an inspiration to anybody who ever touches a weight. Best of luck to ya brother.

Richard, why do so many cops commit felonys and use steroids???? This is a bad message for the kids on the streets.
While you arrest them for meth, you have a needle hanging out of your delt. :-[

Good for you Richard.
Now that you have finished bodybuilding you should apply for a position on the next series of the Apprentice. They would love it to have a former Mr USA on board competing.

Sorry man, didn't want to start any shit or any bad rumors. I'm very glad to hear that it was all bullshit, ironically, I'm pretty sure I've read those idiocies on here.
I've admired you from your NPC days until your vanishing act and it's was kind of a blow to see you go to be honest.
I don't think you're retiring for good however; you shifted your priorites for a while to accomplish something beyond but it'll bite again.
Once you settle down, stabilize into that "new stage of life" you're in, it'll come up ;D
You still in Orange?

Most on getbig would love to trade places with you on all accounts. Educated, champion bber who had REALISTIC GOALS. A true class act. Dude had one of the top physiques from 2003 and on. No hating on this guy, congrats and you deserve everything positive in life...
Fellow pros you need to take notes on this post, get an education instead of selling you assests for G4P.

Farewell, young friend, and all the best to you and yours.
