I hope this is not a joke.

Radio Frequencies Help Burn Salt Water

ERIE, Pa. - An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.

John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.

The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.

Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations.

The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.

The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.

"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Roy said. "Seeing it burn gives me the chills."

Roy will meet this week with officials from the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense to try to obtain research funding.

The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen — which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit — would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.

"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."

if this is real then ....HOLY SHIT

I'd like to know much more about it

Does not mean shit, put it in the archives pages, we have what is called serious cultural lag.

How clueless are those TV news reporters to make this a "story"?

1) We've been able to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water using electrolysis forever. And guess what? Hydrogen burns, duh!  The only problem is...

2) It requires more energy in the form of electricity, whether applied directly, or through this douchebag's "radio wave" gizmo than the burned hydrogen is able to produce.  That's because it takes more energy to break the chemical bonds between hydrogen and oxygen than is produced when the hydrogen is re-oxidized by burning which produces heat and light as a byproduct. That's 10th-grade chemistry.

Congratulations, Gump, you've invented the wheel!  ::)

You might wanna rethink what the fuss is really about before melting own abt it :P

Seems to me it's about an ignorant public "oooo"-ing and "ahhhhh"-ing over over a cool parlor trick that produces zero net energy.

If you think I'm overlooking something, feel free to clue me in.

I don't think they were selling it completely as potential "fuel," rather it was the idea of burning salt water using radio waves- something that has never been done before. I'm not sure of the potential uses of this, but its pretty damn cool  ;D

I'm not a scientist but those polymer engineers at APV company seemed to be pretty damn excited and amazed by this and I'm guessing they're probably well versed in 10th grade chemistry

Instead of using appeal to authority in place of actual argument, how 'bout trying to disprove this statement:

huh  ???

A guy I workout with, went to MIT for a year, and while attending rumours were spreading that someone had built a combustible engine and used water as the fuel source, it was hushed. The cultural lag happens when society (or it's enablers) cannot catch up to technology.

I'm sure you considered that salt water has more elements than hydrogen and oxygen before you started schooling these fools . . . or maybe you didn't.

I can't disprove it but maybe that's why the guys at the independent testing lab (in the video) were so excited

all I've seen is this video and like I said, I'm not a scientist
