:o Kaz is still pretty damn big nowadays when you see him on the WSM shows. He sucks shit as a color commentator but he's a living legend in the strongman sport.
-
its rare to see a good clear pic of Kaz, they are always blurry. Maybe he is just a blurry guy.
-
he looks like grissly adams on steroids.
-
He always looks more hardcore with the beard - I've seen pics of him without it and it takes away from his presence considerably.

Recognize! I give all the credit to the heavy ass quarter reps I perform on all my exercises. There's no need for full range in workouts..it's just a waste. And I do all my lifts with straps too! Dont' want my biceps to work too hard! ;D
::)

Bill Kazmaier (born December 30, 1953 in Burlington, Wisconsin) is a powerlifter and strongman from the United States.
Kazmaier played fullback at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1973-1974 before leaving school to pursue powerlifting full-time. In 1979, Kazmaier won the American powerlifting championship and the IPF world powerlifting championship. He won the IPF world championship again in 1983. Kazmaier was the first person to bench press over 300 kg (661 lb) in competition .His career best powerlifting total of 1100 kg (2425 lb)is still the record for raw powerlifting.

Anypowerlifting other than raw is GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYY. Fucking bench shirts a joke. Like giving high jumpers spring loaded shoes.

i think he can bench maybe 450lbs. (nowdays that is)
-

nope i disagree, any man who benched 661 raw will still have the latent strength to bench 500 at anytime if they keep training even if they are in their 50's, he was doing 12 reps with 500 at the time he did 661.
-
The 661 was before that brutal bar bending pec tear at WSM...he was never close to the same after that

yep, but you have to remember that the joints etc take a beating.
-
Kaz can't bench 500 anymore. Last time I talked to him he had serious shoulder problems and was trying to work it out by lifting lighter. We usually talk or at least email on our birthday which is the same.

exactly, he may look like he can bench 500lbs...maybe his muscles still can but his joints wont let him. its a common thing for guys who used to be brutally strong...they are still big because of years of heavy training but joints prevent em from going heavy anymore.

The pic is from the Worlds in Gothenburg 1983.
The biggest guy in that pic is the guy with the back towards the cam, Lars Hedlund. Didn't compete, injured his knee while competing in WSM I believe.
From what I've been told, weighed 400 lbs @ cerca 6'5''ish at his biggest, seen pics of him with SHW's of that era, totally dwarfed them.
Bigger than Kaz, but obviously Kaz was a better strongman competitor.
The guy farthest to the left is some weird guy, who always acted the back spotter @ the Worlds, for years. Had glasses that made him look like a pimp. Or a serial killer. Anyone knows his name?
The big black dude is John Gamble, winner of the 275's. Thick as a brick, especially the traps.
Also looks like RDC and Mike Bridges.

I'm wrong, dead wrong about the guy being Hedlund. I see that now.

Met him at Club Industry in Chicago a few years ago...he was a prick. He was a spokesman for Strive equipment at that trade show. Like the others have said, he was still a big guy.

Here ya go... That's Brian Smith from London England in the red jacket behind Lee. Brian came over to act as the platform manager at the big meets back then. He did an awesome job of being prepared for the lifters and dealing with them in extreme circumstances when they weren't always at their friendliest. He wore the shades to keep the glare from all the camera flashes from distracting him. -Some old caption somewhere
John Gamble... Trained with him many times. John Gamble was Ronny Coleman, before Ronny Coleman was Ronny Coleman. ;D Gamble's physique was nuts! Absolutely crazy. I'll try and find some pics. He was a coach at Virginia and I think he's still with the Dolphins.... I think.
Edit
John Gamble:
1981-1983.... University of Virginia
assistant strength coach
1984-1993... head strength coach
1994-2005... Miami Dolphins
strength and conditioning coach
2006-present... Director of Player Development

yeah you're right Tommy, Gamble was the strength and conditioning coach at Virginia and then went to the Dolphins, don't know if he's still there though, awesome 275'er for awhile.

Somewhere, I have a picture or two of Brian Smith, Brian's wearing those silly sunglasses. He's overseeing the bar being loaded for a big squat. There's a guy standing behind Brian Smith waiting to lift that bar. That guy is me. A long time ago.

Not sure if this is a compliment or you are making fun of me. Has anyone seen or have one of his Feats of Strength posters. It is really neat. He sent me one several years ago and I lost it. It has a collage of his lifts and then a complete list of all his records. A very cool poster. And he does rep Strive. Now the only time I see him is at shows. He has a very nice wife too.

i had the poster along with his three little thin training books, he autographed all three, the poster had maybe 10-12 pictures on it and a big list of his accomplishments on it.

hahahhahaa, that's Jay Rosciglione who was a record holder in the APF at 165, we used to train together now and then at my old gym, this was 6-7 years ago but that cover is from 81 or so when he was a young guy, fuccker squatted 765, pulled 700 and benched around 405-410, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

-
Glad you liked it.
Isn't that OD Wilson pic crazy. He makes that bar look like one of those preloaded 60 - 70 pound bars, that gyms have in a row on a rack. ;D
If he hadn't left, I think OD Wilson could have weighed 450-470 and totalled in the low 2500's. Raw.

I used to emcee the Gus Rethwitch's World Record Breakers in Hawaii. There was a time when he would fill to capacity the Sheraton Waikiki with over 5,000 people in the audience to watch a powerlifting meet. I can't remember her name but the lady seated next to e was a very well known powerlifter. Marus or something like that. Those meets were so fun and exciting. The crowd would go crazy.
-
that meet seemed like it was one of the biggest in the world at one time.
-
do you go for the health look these days onlyme?
-
here's a great shot of big Gus pulling.
-
awesome physique for a powerlifter, Roger Estep.
-
Gus would pass out on several occassions lifting heavy. I had a tape where he fell off the stage after the lift. I had tapes of all the old meets he had in Hawaii. Every major name in powerlifting came there. Budweiser was the big sponsor and in fact it was featured on Wide World of Sports a couple times if I remember. Once Gus lost that sponsor though the show started going downhill. Those things were crazy.
-
What happened to his shins? Did he trip and fall?
maby deadlift scars? :)
-
Roger Estep was awesome. It's just really too bad you can't predict how you will end up.
-
Those youtube clips of Kaz are awesome.
-
My WSM favorites:
Bill Kazmaier, Jon Pall Sigmarsson, & Mariusz Pudzianowski
Mariusz I believe is the best ever....but the two other gentlemen would have given him a run for his money.
Here's a good tribute to Jon Pall:

Not making fun, just sayin...YOURE BIG AS FUCK
Well, I used to hear that about everyday. Now the word "big" is replaced with "fat". But I am getting back to be the word "big" again. I have trained 11 out of 14 days so far since being back in the gym. I am up to 10 minute intervals on the treadmill and elliptical. I do 3 sets of each right after each other. I get my second wind around 6 minutes or so. Once I hit that i feel fine. Lifting is getting better to. My first day I did 135 for sets of 12. I am now at 5 sets of 8 with 225. The thing I can feel the 225. Before lifting 225 was a waste. I usually warmed up with 315. Not sure if I am just weak or older. I really don't feel older so I am hoping I am just weak right now. We'll see in a month or so. I want to get my cardio up to an hour without stopping. Plus my lower back hasn't hurt in a week so I have not taken any Vicodin for about 7 days which is good.

the late great Dave Pasanella.
-
Both those covers were shot at the meet in Hawaii. Every major lifter from the 80's lifted there. It was invitation only and Budweiser sponsored all their expenses. Gus made great money back then. It was sad when the sponsorship didn't go through anymore. It was mainly due to the lost TV contract.

No I came in 1989. I missed the real good stuff but saw quite a few of the good guys in the late 80's and early 90's. When Gus lost the Bud sponsorship he couldn't afford to bring in a lot of the big name guys and he lost the Sheraton and we ended up at smaller hotels and then it just quit happening and he formed the new organization he has now. Gus did great shows and really loves the sport. Stuntmovie who is on here actually started Pwerlifting USA with Lambert I think a long time ago. Lambert took it over solely after a short while. Powerlifting is huge in Hawaii.

Dude, I don't know you personally, but as a lifter for the last 14 years I have a lot of respect for you. Fuck the haters, get back in the gym and do what you do best! If you ever need anything drop me a PM.

That is one hot woman. Sexy, in shape and very classy looking :o

PLUSA is a GREAT magazine! To me, it is like the bodybuilding mags used to be back in the 60s and 70s. It covers training and eating to be big and strong and has plenty of contest coverage. Skips the rest...

Met him at Club Industry in Chicago a few years ago...he was a prick. He was a spokesman for Strive equipment at that trade show. Like the others have said, he was still a big guy.
Met Kaz years ago, yes, he was a prick.
-
do you go for the health look these days onlyme?
lolz

Met Kaz years ago, yes, he was a prick.
Everyone who wasn't drinking the kool-aid all said the guy is the biggest douche bag on the planet. Its no wonder guys like Squad and Onlyme would eat his ass with a straw.

Thats how a man should look like.
Abs are for fags.

Six pack abs are for teenage, Abercrombie Twinks.

damn i was an asshole in this thread back in the day :(
-
the FIRST OFFICIAL 700 pound bench.
Kaz never recovered from Arcidi beating him in the Bench Press.
Saw a video from the NERB Powerlifting event from 2005 (I think, or 2006). He was still throwing insults about Arcidi on the Mic as he MC'd.
Pretty juvenile IMO.

I hate to be the onboard asshole here, but I met, lifted, or worked with close to 90% of all the powerlifters seen and mentioned here and OnlyMe is partially right concerning my 'association' with Mike Lambert and Powerlifting USA.
Back in the day when Mike was attending some classes at the U of H, he, myself and Steve Dussia (with some help from Bill Starr) published a small, monthly bodybuilding, powerlifting and olympic lifting (thanks to Tommy Kono) bulletin..
Mike graduated and headed back to So Cal and asked us if we would mind if he continued with his own publication to be called PL USA. (A VERY POLITE PERSON!). None of us had any problem with that and wished him much success.
AND Mike and Inju did proceed to make Powerlifting USA the best within its field.
Howdy, Mike, if you are reading this.
I'll be glad to tell some inside lifting stories if there is any interest.

Yeah stunt, please do tell man 8)

Nope, flat stomach, just not a 6-pack twink, like yourself.
Thanks for playing though.
