In general I think these 3 were probably the best guys to never go pro..I know there are others but who was the best out of these 3?
*sorry...I can't find my pic of Edgar but I'm sure someone has one and can throw it on here.
-
There were several pic of Edgar. Edgar would have done will in the mid to late 90's. Mendenhall, in the early to mid 90s here is a pic of Fletcher

he looks incredible there...how he lost the 92 nationals to chris duffy is beyond me.

He has a habit of doing a "Dennis James" (or would Dennis be doing a Edgar Fletcher?)--- he looked off the meter before a show, and whatever pact he had with the Devil would evaporate the day of the contest.

I've got that show-91 nationals-on tape from ESPN and Edgar looked unreal at that show...such an incredible taper, everything big, full, ripped but he still couldn't pull it off..I actually don't see how duffy beat Fletcher or Bo Matlock, both looked great.
-
Rory easily best physique not to turn pro. Incredible build. Is a friend and training partner of our own coach.

You mean Beau Matlock. I remember he was on a cover of Flex with Chris Cormier in army camo working out, and girl in high school went ga-ga over him. You can't lose with a name like Beau.
I agree about Edgar not pulling it off. He went down hill from there, I wonder what he is doing. He probably is healthier for not getting his pro card. A blessing in disguise.

It was '92 Nationals (as mentioned previously). Levrone won the '91 Nationals, with Wheeler in 2nd.

I knew I spelled it wrong but was way to lazy to look it up.....

Matt Mendenhall was amazing....the white Flex Wheeler.

After that, he seemed to have developed a "thick skinned" look, that Vic Richard's and John Sherman also had developed.

sorry about that, I actually meant 92. If I remember right Edgar showed up in great shape at the 93 USA's but had to pull out due to dehydration...I don't remember if he made it through pre judging or what but I think that was the last time he really nailed his conditioning.
-
Mendenhall was flawless..... :o

Yeah did a Paul Dillet and wound up in the ER. I think that was it for him.
IMO Mendenhall is the best of the three, guy was perfect. But he never nailed it on stage

Agreed Rory was great. I trained under his guidance for a year. That pic of Matt above is well known to be altered.

I think that's the unaltered version of that pic, I could be wrong....
I think Rory looks outstanding in the above pic, I think he's better than Paris there but I'm not a judge...
-

Mendenhall reminds me of Jeff Poulin. Similar physique, arms and quads, except Mendenhall's is better. Matt's flows better.

Did Mendenhall have some mental problems that caused him to give up bodybuilding? I think I read something about panic anxiety from steroids?
-
ima put palumbo up there too
-
oh hey by the way isnt that photo of mendenhall morphed, i remember it from years ago

No, he had beef with Craiggers. He and Craig were going back and forth in the mags. It seemed that he was the type Craig didn't want to sucker punch..He was mad that Craig won his pro card over him. Craig did have a point that Edgar was not at his best conditioning, said he had a thick skin look.

Called Rachael McLish.
-
this is absolute bodybuilding perfection, this is what bodybuilding should be.
-
All three should have been Pros, but Rory was incredible could never quite peak for a show and carried 280 at about 6' tall in the offseason with a small waist and incredible taper.
-
Jeff King would be top of my list
Exactly ! Jeff King, in my honest Opinion, is the GREATEST KNOWN Bodybuilder to never go Pro. Weider FUCKED him ... he fucked him REAL GOOD ! >:(

Spill the beans on what Weider did to fuck him up...
"The story goes that Weider talked to Jeff about signing him up to a contract but then told him that first he would have to win the NPC Nationals as well as the IFBB Mr. Universe.
Jeff explained to him that he had won the AAU and NABBA versions of those titles which by the way were very prestigous back then, but Weider insisted and Jeff told him to get lost.........otherwise King would more than likely be a household name today. "
This was Posted a while back by Wes ... this is the Story that I, too, heard regarding Jeff King. Sad really. He had A LOT of Potential !

True.

Mendenhall was WIDE, low insertions, long full muscle bellies. Can you say thigh sweep, calves, tiny joints. Alas, he never equalled his 82 conditioning to go with the size he had when he took second to Strydom at the Nationals. He dwarfed Gary, which is a hard thing to do. He also had no weak bodyparts.
