Title: Bodybuilders who reached their personal best past 40.
Post by: Matt C on November 29, 2007, 02:33:17 PM
Don Youngblood = 48 (2002 Master's)
Dave Pulcinella = 43 (2007 NA's, review of "Raising the Bar 2" coming soon)
Toney Freeman = 40 (2007 Ironman)
Troy Alves = 40 (2006 Mr. Olympia)

I was just watching the 1993 English Grand Prix last night (review = http://www.bodybuildingpro.com/1993englishgrandprixdvdreview.html) and it amazed me how Sonny Schmidt at 40 and Ron Love at 42 had such clean and fresh looking physiques.  Good skin quality and no real signs of age in their physiques.  Bertil Fox trained heavy and competed until he was 43 at the 1994 Ironman!  Pound for pound he remained one of the strongest bodybuilders there was until that time.

King Kamali

Did he state in Musclemag that he plans on winning the 2012 Mr. Olympia?

I find it very impressive that so many world class bodybuilders are well over 40 and are as strong and muscular as any 20 something around.

Yeah Sonny was real healthy!  He died a few years later....and of  course, heavy juicing and supplementation had nothing to do with this premature death!

I had read that Sonny lived fast and also smoked rock.  He died of lung cancer.  In the thread on getbig which has since been removed, someone did state that the bodybuilding drugs certainly didn't help matters, and I would of course agree with that.

Mydavid,
When was his best performance?

I personally believe he looked his best at the National's in 99' and then the Master's Olympia 2000...after that i think his body went the wrong direction although he managed 5th place at the Master's 2001. The pic above was at that show (the day after) and although he was shredded, he was small if that makes sense.

Beckles ,Dickerson ,Corney,Ferrigno[he used a ton of gear and Gh during his comeback ], and many others reached their bests into their 40s. But you will probably not see that again due to the ammount of drugs needed to be a top tier guy today. Guys could probably look great into their 50 and 60s [maybe even beyond ] with 70s type cycles[200-700mgs of 1-2 compounds] if they stayed motivated and didnt start until they were 35 -40 .Too many guys start way too young with the gear and it takes a toll on them over time.Plus when you are younger and start using gear .Later on it will take much higher doses to keep you looking similar. The law in diminishing returns kicks in and you will start going backward no matter how you take .[ ir Jay and Ronnie ]
