There is an old adage that a good wrestler will beat a good boxer anytime. Think this can go for a good MMA fighter against a good boxer. Tyson was one of a kind but there is always a Buster Douglas somewhere down the road just waiting.
Tyson was the Man, no doubt about it. But boxers are one dimensional, while MMA's have more body weapons to use. Knowledge of leverage, pulling/pushing, gripping, grappling, take downs, floor fighting, etc, etc, etc. Even a good street fighter (which Tyson was at 12) could do very well against a good boxer, Tyson included. Gouges, bites (remember when Tyson reverted back to his street fighting day by biting an ear), ear, nose and nuts ripping, etc are all normal moves for them. Good street fighters have the ability to fight in a phone booth (when there were phone booths) and beat anyone. A boxer needs room to be fully affective at all. This can go for Karate players as well, they need room. Get up and in the face of either and see how well they adjust to that. A good MMA fighter should be able to handle up close fighting very well.
Like with lifting, SquadFather has no real knowledge of boxing, fighting or much of anything else. Wonder if he has ever been in a real fight. ( maybe when he fights with his mother when she wants to wash his skid marked and cum stained jockey shorts) Oh sorry, I forgot about all those "Owning" stories he use to tell everyone. He just starts threads to be noticed and needs the attention I guess. Poor lonely guy, have pity on him.

Of course it does, but he did not have the mental ability to hang in a fight when he couldn't just go in there and bully the other guy. That night Buster Douglas fought one hell of a fight. He brought the skills that everyone knew he had along with some heart, threw a beautiful jab and the occasional straight that landed and Tyson did not have the mental toughness to get through it. That is a HUGE factor in boxing. It is what made Ali the best ever. Tyson had SPECTACULAR raw physical skills, but boxing is so much more than that.

As for the question at hand, if Tyson learned a basic takedown defense he would own, sorry but it's true. Just watch them in their stand up if any of them could actually throw a proper jab they would do major damage, most have a space the size of two fits between their gloves, you don't think tyson would get between their before they could even blink? And when they go for his legs their head is unguarded you really think they could take a poweful uppercut to the head? Because i can gurantee he would throw one like none of those guys have ever felt before in their life.

80,000 bought at 59.95 oscar de la hoya and mayweather,
75,000 bought at 49.95 trinidad and mosley
75,000 bought at 54.95 wrestmania whatever one just occured
70,000 bought at 49.95 mayweather and whats his face the fight sucked anyway
the 5,6,7, were all wrestling mma biggest event was ufc were liddell fough rampage with about 25,000 bought, for comparison hbo just aired a free fight with oscar de la hoya fighting a washed up former champ over 10000 people called in the night of just to add hbo for this fight. So boxing and wrestling are still kings.

I think if Tyson in his prime worked on sprawling for about 6 months to a year he could be the HW MMA champ. Even without the ability to sprawl I think he would be a force in MMA, but I think a prime Mark Kerr or Mark Coleman could take him down and hold him down, but you never know.
Coleman and Kerr were Olympic Freestyle wrestlers and in the Primes they never missed a takedown.
I think Tyson would own any Karate, Kungfu, Muay Thai, fighters, even BJJ fighters as BJJ guys usually suck at takedowns.

The reason Chuck was so dominant is because he kept the fight standing with his amazing sprawling ability and put guys to sleep.
Mike Tysons hands are light years ahead of Chucks or any other MMA fighter.

If i remember correctly Serra made GSP look bad the first time they fought, and i know you guys are going to say .."Its a fluke, a fluke..." but once you beat someone like that, in your mind when you face them again you already know the feeling of what it is to win...a huge mental victory. I agree about Holmes. He was my favorite when I was a kid. That's how I started boxing. Didn't last long...lol. I believe he hurt his legacy with all of those combacks. Look at Marvin Hagler. He could have gotten BIG money to fight Sugar Ray but didn't. I bet that fight would still sell. Same as Holmes vs. Foreman. Then Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini comes back.

MMA has changed a lot from the original premise Rorian had. But it had to if it was going to survive financially. Back in the day it was almost impossible to find a place to put on a fight. There just wasn't enough rules to make it mainstream or even legal. I liked the way it was when it first started. I liked it when you had to fight 2 or 3 or more times in one night. I liked it when there was no real weight classes. But hey you gotta do what you gotta do to make money.

Of course, but this argument is about top boxers vs top MMA fighters. Of course Tyson would destroy 99% of guys who do MMA recreationally. My point, however, is that he would be defeated by top MMA fghters like Minotauro, Fedor, Crocop. Why? Because they can fight much better than tyson with their legs and on the ground. One of Crocop's rounhouse kicks to the head of Tyson and he's going down. If any of these guys bring Tyson to the floor, he's finished.
